Any Double Bass repair/set-up specialists in Oxfordshire?

Hi Kev, Yes, George is a really lovely guy and I find it hard to be mad at him, However, I can't believe that they're not offering any kind of warranty on the work, and the fact remains that after spending close to £3000 with the specific aim of sorting any cracks and buzzes, the bass sounds like this... http://soundcloud.com/daflewis/buzz Can anyone honestly say they'd be happy with that? As for going back for another set up, we've already tried that, but it was never going to take away the rattles. -

Hi George, For pics, you have to put them on an image hosting site like photobucket or Flickr and then you can post the links on here... -

Hi George, As you know, it's not the quality of the woodwork that is a problem (though please feel free to post pics). There are two issues as we spoke about; the first is that an estimate, whilst open to some fluctuation, shouldn't change by 50%+ especially without a call to check that it's ok. Second, is that you said the work would sort any cracks and buzzes and I should have a good workhorse at the end of it. Well I certainly don't have that at the moment and it looks like it's going to cost me at least another £500 now to get it playable. I'm sorry I had to resort to going public like this, but you made it quite plain on the phone that you'd washed your hands of the whole affair. If you'd like to talk about it again, I'm happy to have a chat. Cheers, Daf -

Absolutely bloody livid! I shall certainly be spreading the word... -
Hi Dave, No problem - can you PM me your address and I'll get them sent asap. As far as compared to the RABs... well, I've never actually A-B'd them on the same bass, but as you've pointed out before, they're basically the same string with different outer wraps - round wound nylon as opposed to flat, so a brighter sound as you'd expect, and to my mind, a slightly softer feel. Actually It'd be great if you could let me/us know your thoughts on that after you've tried them! Cheers, Daf

I know this is quite an old post, but i feel i must share my experience of thomas martin for repairs... Appalling! A huge catologue of errors - I'll list... Took a bass for renovation in february.... that one never got done - it's now November - they kept putting it off....but that's another story! took a second bass there for front off repair, cracks and generally make good - new fingerboard bridge etc... estimate £1800 finally got it back after 4 months and they charged me £2800 - there was a buzz on the open G and the set up was awful - the nut was cut too low. Took it back and left it with them. i got a call and was told there must be a new crack or seam come loose as it was still buzzing and there'd be extra charges to sort it. (front off again so min £500) No way i was giving them any more money so i picked it up today and it's now also buzzing on the A as well as the G - looks like one of the internal braces is loose. also there are now 3 new arrows drawn on the bass showing the location of other loose seams and a crack - which, according to them all must have opened up in the 1 day that i'd had it back.... Beware! -
Post a reply to register your interest in a trial set.... ULTRA BLACKS A black nylon flatwound string with a bit more tension than the rockabillys. A real dark horse this one, has a lovely punch to the pizz and a good amount of growl and sustain; it also bows surprisingly well, though with a definite "reediness" to the sound. ORDER ( * = done)) Sarah Thomas * Rudders * Jwbassman * ChrisF * Ubassman * Maude * Johnny dissident * PURPOLARIS * Burg * Steve * TheRev * Trashabilly Invicta59 TheRev (again! )

Yeh, it's a tricky one isn't it... - the difference in tension of the same string on two different basses can be quite dramatic - I've found that my pit bass tends to give the G string a higher tension than normal, and as it's also my main testing bass I need to very aware of that when trying prototypes; so I'd be interested to know how the balance of the supers feels on your bass... As for the new hybrids, we're getting very close now - in fact, I'm currently waiting for some beta test sets and I'll be making a set available on here for people to try... Watch this space...

Hi Patrick, Sorry! I didn't realise that my notifications are not switched on for the welcome thread... Oops... Anyway, I think that what you have there are silver slaps - the factory call it "mauve" - a slightly purplish blue.... (The super silvers are black at the ball end) Hope that helps, but if you're still unsure please come back to me. Cheers, Daf

Hi Phil, Oops! Sorry, dropped the ball there - consider yourself on the list.... As for the braids, yes, again I commented without thinking - they're not on trial at the moment, the reason being that I think we're going to be replacing them with the new prototypes that I've been working on - I'll be putting these up for testing soon hopefully!

C1900 German Flatback - Sold

Hi Phil, First, sorry I didn't reply earlier! As far as the best place to buy, I'm afraid I don't really know... I'm sure eBay is worth a look, but I don't think anyone's found them for less than about £80 anyway.... As you're going to be doing some arco work it might be worth trying the braids too - they bow much better and are just a little darker sounding... Should you want to try both, please just sign up for them in the appropriate trials threads. Cheers, Daf

Replacing a Silver Slap G with something slightly brighter
daflewis replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Hi Clarky, I'll send you another silver slap G to make sure it's not a duff string, and I'll also send you a set of super silvers so you can try the G with your slaps and also try the whole set of supers to see what works best for you. (And if it turns out to be a duff G string I will, of course, sort a replacement) I've been meaning to get a trial set of the super silvers out anyway, so this seems a good time to start! Hope that works for you. Cheers, Daf -
