Hi Tim, Checked out some YouTube of the L1 system - looks really interesting - you've obviously had good experience with it, is it the holy grail for db? Or perhaps somewhere close... (I love my suitcase too!)

Hi Clarky, Mine is in very similar condition, so I guess it could be... The other thing I can think of might be that they made those flat backs with very thin tables to help them resonate right from the off - that could be why you're getting too much bass most of the time? Just a thought... As mentioned, I'm happy to get together if it would help - I work in Victoria in the evenings so I'm not too far away from you...
-
Oh, by the way, I did a recording on my Wilfer 5 string using slaps and the Ehrlund - the only problem I had was string noise due to the Ehrlund giving me more top end.
-
Damn! That must be frustrating... Sorry to hear you're having problems Clarky. I know it won't help for Sunday, but I'd be happy to meet up and do some experimenting... Two heads are better than one! The placement I have found works on mine is in between the bridge feet, but about 2 inches south, or alternatively, on the bass bar about 1/2 inch below the bass side bridge foot....

Yes, you're right... On both counts! it is just a pad, and it isn't explained... at all if I recall correctly.... Ehrlund said that they recommend trying it on low first just to play it safe (they had a problem with someone recording a violin on hi without checking if low was suitable first and ending up with distortion on playback). So don't be afraid to try hi...

Great advice thinameistaken - very small amounts of blue tack on the corners and don't squash them down.... The only thing that I'd add is that I use a German flat back too and had a similar issue; I spoke to Ehrlund and they said that if the sound is good but the volume low, don't be afraid to switch the pre to "hi" and max out the volume - the pre is designed to work flat out and it won't introduce any noise or headroom issues running it this way. I now do this very successfully and still get 2 months + out of the battery doing 8 shows a week. Hope that's of some help....

Hi, Just wanted to say sorry I'm not more involved in the discussion - I'm on holiday till a week Monday, but I'll certainly plough in then! (also I gave Kev a £20 "Basschat discount" and that, of course, goes for anyone else too) - hope I'm alright to mention that here! Cheers, Daf

I (obviously) think they're great; but placement is everything (just like a mike). They have a very true response, but if you're used to a piezo then the sound will feel a bit "open and airy" to start with. The top end is unbeatable though - I do a lot of arco and the EAP has the best sound for that of any pickup I've come across - finally my bass doesn't sound like it's got a cold! One thing to note - the EAP is very resistant to feedback and spillage COMPARED TO A MIC - click your fingers next to it and you won't hear it. But if something is making your bass vibrate then that will act like a mic diaphragm and the EAP will pick that up, so on loud gigs where the monitors or stacks are kicking off the stage, you may still have problems. Cheers , Daf

Hi chaps, Just to let you know, I deal with the UK for Ehrlund. The price is £450 for the pickup and preamp. (I've edited this post as, sadly I've had to put the prices up... Really sorry about that!) I'll still do a 10% discount for basschatters though! So £405 Cheers, Daf P.S. If you want it posting, there's also a £10 charge for special delivery (next day, insured and signed for), though I work in Victoria, so if you're in the London area and fancy a trip in to the centre I'd be happy to meet up for a coffee and hand it to you.

Hi Noojb, Thanks for the feedback - that's a really useful comparison. The honeys were designed to have a more "reserved" sound, if you know what i mean - and, in part, that's what makes them better to bow (along with the metal wraps) - it also gives them a more "thumpy" pizz which is nice for straight ahead jazz. But it's all so down to personal preference isn't it... i love the sound of the slaps for jazz - i find they really cut through; but i also love the ultra blacks (RABs with a little more tension) yet most of the time i need my basses strung with braids or honeys (or the new prototypes) because so much of my playing involves switching between pizz and arco - I think i need more double basses!...(as if 5 wasn't enough!!)
yep reckon I'll be working my way through all the sets! many thanks for setting this up, great way to expand the horizons without going bankrupt!
Yay! and why not!? And thanks for that - always nice to be appreciated. Which reminds me, I must pull my thumb out of my a** and get the other sets sorted! By the way, how's the condition of the strings holding up? They've been on and off a few basses now, are they still pretty decent?

Thanks for the comments Bassinmyface - I see you've signed up to try the silver slaps; you'll certainly get more growl from them, but they are quite a bright sound because of the round outer wrap. I think you'll like them anyway, but it might be worth trying the rockabillys too - they're the darkest sounding string, but do still have some sustain and growl... Just a thought. Daf

Depending on which side of the old country you are, Tim Toft just outside stoke might be worth a try... Not used him myself, but heard only good things from others... Just google him.

Hi Steve, Thanks once again, for taking the time to share your thoughts on the strings - and such nice thoughts too! I think that, as Bremen discovered, the big problem with these strings is the diameter and the problems of getting them to fit on a bass - I have them on one of my basses and love them for jazz, but were it not for my work with the company I probably wouldn't have even tried them. Cheers, Daf
