1. Bilbo has a point - won't be an expensive job... On the other hand, you really shouldn't have too much trouble getting it out through the f hole (i believe that's how a luthier would do it) - so i'd say give it a go (perhaps with someone to help and a pair of long nosed pliers) - if it all goes tit's up you can always go to a luthier then, but i really can't see a problem. As for putting it back - that's a different story - but same result. Have a go by all means, but i doubt you'll have any luck. A luthier would take the wooden block that holds the spike off and sort it that way, but there are issues with sound posts falling over etc... still not an expensive job though. Good luck! Daf
2.
coated strings are great if u just like to fingerbang, but if you use a pick much you wil scratch the coating off and that aint nice.
Good point...
3. Elixirs!?! Eight shows a week and i change them every six months or so (actually it has been over a year on occasion... )
4. P.S. if you're in central london of an evening you can drop by and try them on my bass before you buy!
5.
Yes the Corellis are quite easy to play, although I personally felt that the tradeoff its that they don't have such a deep growly sound as most Jazzers prefer.
+1 used to really like the corellis bar the slight issue mentioned by guyl. The string i now use on all my uprights is the obligato solo set. great pizz and arco sound (though not for tanking it with a bow, or you'll throttle the note) and soft on the hands. For those who don't know, the solo set is designed to be tuned a tone higher than normal - A,E,B,F sharp (often used for playing classical double bass concertos) so the idea is that when you tune it to concert pitch it's got a low tension. Try tuning your bass F,C,G,D and you'll get a rough idea of the tension. I promise that you'll love them!
6. just a note on my experience: don't go for a stand with a cup for the spike - i have one and if you're on a gig with quick changes it's a real pain trying to locate the cup, as you can't see it....
7.
I have a good set of pliers and an hour with nothing to do tomorrow before we beat Ireland. I could make it lovely for you
Though, actually...... Lovely sound; seems to have great sustain especially noticeable on the first clip.... Could make a great fretless...
8.
Me too. Thankfully this time around i have so little money i can't torture myself over the possibility of snagging it!
unfortunately i'm in that horrible situation where i've actually got the cash and am supposed to be looking for a fretless..... and now this pops up! bugger!
9. Hi Owen, I've watched this being bought and sold over the last few years, always trying to justify buying it myself.... I can't imagine how you felt when you saw those marks for the first time! - My parker was damaged by a dep a year or so ago and i still haven't got over it! Any chance of a sound clip or two?
10. Interesting that you say the realist is middley - i've been using them for about 10 years and like them because on my basses i find exactly the opposite! (which makes them particularly useful for gigs involving pizz and arco as most pickups sound quite nasal with a bow). could it have anything to do with placement? has the bridge moved or possibly lifted toward the fingerboard (as happens over time)? - if so there would be less pressure on the pad which will change the response and volume - just as you've described. Sorry if i'm stating the obvious/teaching granny to suck eggs - just throwing ideas around...
11. If you like your shuttle 6.0 and don't really want to change, this might be another option... http://www.d-tar.com/solstice.shtml thomann sells them at about £325......
12.
@ Daf - those vids are way the best i've seen. A great resource for any beginner. If anyone wants to check them all, search youtube for 'First year technique'. You'll spot the bass ones. he's standing in front of an atrocious orange painting.
cheers fatback, glad to be of help.
13. I assume you learning french not german! actually this covers the basics well... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLPLqKso3Zs cheers, Daf
14. Is the pain a cramp at the base of your thumb? just a guess, but it's a very common problem at the start - make sure you're keeping your thumb bent (and try and relax!).
15.
As advised, here are some more photos of the bass which show off the beautiful grain on the front better.
Uh, think those pics could be a bit bigger Damo!
16.
The G does have a different ball end, solid as oposed to the hole in the other two. The silks on each string are different colours too.
The different coloured silks on each string is normal even for the same set, particularly at the tuner end.... it's more unusual to have different colours at the ball end (of the same make) but the d and a do look part of the same set.... ooh, a poser! I'll have a think and a root around see if i can find anything.... no promises mind!
17. it might just be the pic, but the ball end on the g looks different from the other two... could it be a different make? (though the silks look the same)
18. Hi Kev, might be worth mentioning in the title that it's a 6 string - to help find the right audience.
19.
loved the 4th link.... that really was a great explanation of the pre..
Thanks! - if you're ever in london PM me - you can come and try it out.
20.
Glad you're still about, made of sterner stuff clearly!
Hi Mike, yes still here, though not as often these days as there's so much work to do on the new house! Chaps, I'm not saying everyone was rude and
I think what has been said in other posts is quite reasonable. "No apology needed" from a moderator seems reasonable to me
doesn't even deserve a response - Pantherairsoft will know full well that I'm not referring to him. What I AM saying is that if you look at the timeline, he was given about 90mins of helpful advice; apparently had a problem loading pics so probably went to bed (it being around 11.30pm) and the next time he logs in he sees a very different attitude and is probably scared off. Now he MAY have been trying it on, or he MAY have had a bass made of Brazilian rosewood with solid gold hardware.... we'll probably never know. But this has been spoken of before and is one of the problems of the internet - like driving; everyone is in their hermetically sealed environment and treats others in a way that they never would face to face.
21. well, i think you managed to scare him off.... how long did that take? a day or so? I remember a similar "welcome" when i joined.
22.
Great song! I just love the fretless sound........
Thanks Blademan, pretty creamy.... though i think i'd have liked just a tad more bottom end.. (and a bit more level) but not my call .... and probably just as well, or it would have become a bass solo....
