Thanks for the replies chaps and sorry i didn't get back earlier, had a problem accessing the site yesterday. Yes, you're right Rob, things don't seem to be shifting generally - there's a lot of "GASy" gear hanging around at the moment! and thanks for the thought on pricing Teej, i think you might be right. That's also a good point about laminates, if i didn't have three dbs and a stick already i might have been tempted myself but the laminate thing does put me off slightly - pure snobbery, as the sound is really big and they are actually often more stable than their solid conterparts. Chris, i've noticed your 5 string and it looks like a steal!I'm really surprised that's still around. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=double+bass Anyway, the upshot appears to be that the price is not too far off the mark, if a little towards the upper end. I'm sure someone will make an offer.... sometime..... -

Hi, 1950's east european (we think!) solid front, laminate sides, in the for sale section (£1500ono) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry776185 Cheers, Daf

Hi, The description is perhaps not as precise as it could be as I'm putting this up for sale for a friend who doesn't know much about basses..... any questions and I'll try and help.... We think it's an eastern european bass imported by Boosey & Hawkes and probably made in the 50's (if anyone knows better please let me know!). it has a solid wood front and laminate back and sides. I've only played it once but it has a nice big boomy sound particularly the A and E strings - the G string definitely needs changing - it's very old and not showing the bass in it's best light (though,of course a new set would do wonders anyway.) There are a few battle scars as would be expected, but as far as i could see there were no open cracks or anything that needs professional attention. the bass is in Harpenden (about 25miles north of London) and my friend would like to get £1500 ono. (edit) He really wants shot of this so asked me to drop the price to £1000 ono. Cheers, Daf

hi, I have mentioned this in another thread, can't find it off hand... One thing you will notice when you try a carbon fibre bow is that they tend to "squeak" a bit more easily; not such a problem for an experienced arco player but worth noting. Cheers, Daf

oh, and yes, i always have a tuner pedal within "eyeshot" as well! helps if the blowers are a bit, er, jittery... if you know what i mean....

w.h. smith... about 40p... i believe they're called "pencils".... but seriously, it's common practice in shows when you're depping and using other people's basses all the time. mine's always covered in them...

do you have a stiff/aching neck? for many years i thought i was suffering from tendonitis in the wrist (was even told this by an nhs consultant). i'm a full time pro, and when i started my current job i began having severe problems including tingling palms, so i thought i was developing cts as well. After doing some online research i discovered that pressure on a nerve in the neck can often cause these symptoms - see here I went to see a great osteopath in north london who is also a violinist - i really wanted to see someone who understood musicians, especially as the nhs consultant had released me saying, "as far as we're concerned it's a mild case" - meaning i could still do simple things like pick up a cup.....oh great.... After one session with the osteo there was a 60-70% improvement in the tingling palm and within six weeks/sessions i was completely free of hand and wrist problems for the first time in about 6-7 years. i now just make sure i do my stretching exercises and i'm fine - still do get a stiff neck but at least it doesn't end up down my arm. I'm not saying this is your problem, but it's certainly worth looking into - and the same for everyone else having problems - especially Sugden!!! - if you push your head forward and then look up, this puts pressure on nerves in the neck - for me it's pit work - looking up at a conductor - but it's the same postion that you adopt on a bike!! i still get tingling fingers when i ride but it goes away if i push my head back and tuck my chin in to strech the back of my neck. Good luck! Daf P.S. if anyone wants the osteo's number let me know (he also works in Bristol).
Yap, the highlighted frequencies seem to be recommended settings. When I intially started messing around with it, I just checked out the frequency settings on other well known pres like Sadowsky and worked off those. In the end I just went for what worked with my particular instrument. It's great fun working through various settings but then again I'm a nerd when it comes to that kind of stuff.
yes, it is good working through the frequencies - another nerd here! mind you i've got AC-01 pre's in both my main basses and you've got to love playing with those!! :brow:
One word of advice is to have a pen and paper at the ready and take note of the current settings just in case
Oops! too late.... Actually, they were all set to "off" so not too hard to recall. right, off to find the "growl/mwah" frequency.... think about 800hz should do it....

Thanks to everyone - especially jmanfunk for the diagram - I'm glad I didn't carry on trying to work out the combinations for myself!! jman, do the outlined ones have any special significance, or are they just a good place to start? and it's interesting that there are gaps between 160hz-220hz and 4k-6k - just a factor of the circuit maybe? BB2000, sorry you had a bad experience, i did read of some neck problems - stangely more with the carbon necks it seems!? The one i'm looking at is all wood and is a few years old, so any problems should have come out by now. It's also got a lovely growl - almost as good as my old Warwick - and that's saying something!

not much help with the status or wal I'm afraid, but http://www.basstasters.com/ is worth a look. they try to be "scientific" about things playing the same riff with the same settings/levels etc. they also test a lot of amps and pre-amps. cheers, Daf

Hi all, I'm looking at aquiring a Schack fretless - a "unique" model i think it is, and in checking it all out i've found some interesting micro switches in the control cavity which appear to change the frequency response of the three tone controls (there are 4 switches for each tone pot, it seems) - does anyone have any more info on exactly how these work? cheers, Daf
That's a bargain. I borrowed one similar for a gig last year and was really impressed. Very big and deep sounding for a new instrument. Don't be put off by the size, the one I tried was very comfortable to play. I'd be very tempted myself but until I sell my Mentec, there be no money to spend. Good luck with the sale Daf.
Thanks for the recommendation Chris, It was very comfy to play for years and I'm not sure why I'm having problems now, but it seems to be down to the extra stretch back to reach 1/2 and 1st position due to the body size - think I'm just getting old BTW if I had £9K to spare I'd be taking a good long look at your Mentec, but alas, no.
I might be able to con the missus into a day out sometime Where could I see the bass?
It's at my home at the moment, J13 M1 (ampthill) but depending on where you end up on your "day out" I could meet you somewhere if it's easier - the only problem would be finding somewhere to try them out.

Hi Keith, It's an Eb neck with a low B (the only way to go if you ask me! )and is 42.5 inch (108cm) scale length, so not too long considering the body size. A 19th century german would be perhaps more what i had in mind if trading, but that said, when i bought this one i wasn't expecting to buy a new instrument, it was the only modern instrument i tried that didn't sound all "zingy", if you see what i mean. I see you're in Harrogate, do you ever get a bit further south? as I'm a bit tied to my show (6 days a week) Cheers, Daf
