1.
Hi Daf not in the market for a new bass... However, that's no reason not to think about these things. I've got a Stentor Profundo (hand-carved, correct timbers, 4 string, low action - mainly because it needs setting up properly and playing) sitting in a shop out of sight and out of mind...I bought it as a spare but use a 5 string NS instead when I need to would you consider a swap plus cash as an option? just playing with ideas... cheers Gareth
Hi Gareth, I really wasn't planning on another "new" double bass, but, as you say "that's no reason not to think about these things." I'd certainly be interested in a look - where are you based? I'm in Bedfordshire, so I hope you're not going to say Aberdeen..... cheers, Daf
 2.
Ohh Daf, now thats stunning!!
Cheers Matt, yes, she is a bit special - and a bargain!
 3.
Haha to someone not acquainted with double basses the size of that just looks absolutely ridiculous!
Yeh, even though it doesn't show much detail I added that full length pic. of it up against my front door as I think it gives a pretty good indication of it's size.
 4.
It looks nice, but a bit cold. Perhaps I could make it a coat?
hmmm...... do you have something in a nice tartan perhaps?.....
 5. Thanks guys, You both know how sad I'll be to see this go, but it's either downsize (literaly!) or play about one week in four..... BTW Steve, I think you're being a bit hard on yourself!! wasn't it the first time you'd ever got up close with one of these?
 6.
Good job you used a credit card
Yeh, but it's going to be a while... I called my provider and they said they'd get someone from their dedicated team to call me back; when I asked how long? they said, "well, normally a few days but there are so many companies going bust at the moment that it's going to be 6-8 weeks!!" and that's with the extra staff they've taken on to help with the backlog. Sign o' the times I suppose.
 7. I ordered some DB strings last week but they never arrived and I can't get in contact with them; no reply to e-mails and the phone is off the hook. I suspect that they've gone bust so I'll have to get the money back through my credit card provider, but the web site is still up and running and still taking orders so I thought I'd put up a warning not to use it. Cheers, Daf
 8. Hi All, Due to wrist/shoulder/hand problems I'm having to sell this beast. It's a full size German 5-string with a swell back, made by Emanuel Wilfer. It's about 12 years old and has a huge sound. I love it, but I'm not very tall (about 5'7") and after years playing it I've had to admit that it's just too big for me and is aggravating my hand problems (the stop is 42.5inch) Flanker and Subaudio has seen it in the flesh and I'm sure they'd both testify to it's great sound. You can see and hear it here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5QS7vzb-dw There's a solo at 3:30.... (and sorry about the foreign language! ) and another here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHT9FuWEtuo...feature=related I'm after £4000 firm. comes with a padded cover (but could do with a new case really) There is a crack on the headstock due to an emergency stop in my car but this has been professionaly glued and has been stable for the 8-9 years since it happened (and is not a load bearing part). (see below) Otherwise the usual battle scars that you'd expect on a gigging bass, but nothing requiring attention. Cheers, Daf
 9. Hi Jim, Sorry, as Velvetkevorkian said, I haven't checked this thread for a week or so. PMs (private masseges) are the best bet for this sort of thing as you know that someone is trying to contact you. I'll e-mail you....
 10. I think that bass would be a bargain at £1000 let alone £10-£20! Put me down for two as well - it's a great idea - Hope it all works out.
 11. Hi Jim, I'll e-mail you so I don't hijack this thread any more!! By the way, as far as the header for the for sale add, IIRC if you do a full edit of the first post you should be able to edit the header too.... perhaps.... Cheers, Daf
 12.
Hi Daf. Yep, them wuz the days. I left Newport in 1994 so can only just remember the taste of cheese on toast and Glengettie Tea!
ohh! luvly.... isn'it actually, something must have happened in '94 - that's when I left for good too! (though I hadn't spent much time there for quite a few years before that) .......umm, wasn't this a for sale thread at some point? - is there a nostalgia section on the site?
 13.
Hi Dafydd, I remember you but do you remember me? Jim
Oh, by the way, It's just Daf these days - thanks to Mat Lucas - I got fed up with being "the only bass player in the village"!!
 14.
Hi Dafydd, I remember you but do you remember me? Jim
Hi Jim..... or James back then IIRC?! Sorry, only just looked at the thread again after a week or so..... You know it took me a few minutes and I was a bit confused by the two different user i.d.s but once I'd worked out the Bradley bit, yes! I think I do remember! A Trace Elliot 4x10 and a Wal with a beautiful birdseye top and ebony board! God was I jealous!! and that must have been back in 1984-85? Hope things are good with you; what are you playing these days? - still got that Wal? (edit: just saw your sig. and I can see that you do still have the Wal!) I assume the Eden's going to be replaced with something equally "lush"?(sorry, going back to my welsh roots there!).... and talking of Wals, do you have any contact with the other Wal - the guitarist that used to live up the road from you? Last I heard he'd become a driving instructor.... Hope I have remembered correctly or this is going to be embarrassing!! Cheers, Daf Oh, and Bump!
 15.
i seem to get alot of harmonics? also, how can i really bring out the higher notes on the higher pivot points? (that may be a setup issue)
The guys are right that a few lessons would be good just to get you going in the right direction, but to help with the immediate problems i would say that you probably need to adjust the position of the bow on the string. To explain..... There is a sweet spot where you will get the best sound, and for the lower positions this is usually just a bit off the end of the fingerboard (depending on the sound you want this can be both over the fingerboard [warmer] or very close to the bridge [harsher], though these are more specialised techniques) the problem with getting harmonics is often simply because you're playing on a (harmonic) node, so simply move the bow slightly toward the bridge and it should disappear. Another thing that can help to eliminate "harmonics" (or squeaks!) is to slow down the bow movement. a general rule of thumb (particularly in thumb position - excuse the pun!) is, the higher you go up the string, the closer to the the bridge you need to bow and the slower you need to bow - also make sure that you are pressing down the string firmly enough, as this can also cause harmonics (as far as this is concerned it could well be down to the set up of your bass as well as simply the strength in your fingers.) - i would say experiment with bow speed, position and the weight that you put on the string - keep in mind a simple (Rabbath) idea that you don't try to push the bow into the string, just use the weight of your arm. That's a lot to explain in a short(ish) post - so if you have any further questions or things are a bit unclear - (it is 2am!!) then please feel free to PM me. Cheers, Daf
 16.
Hi There I live in Pothcawl South Wales and yes I work for JLT in Cardiff. Cheers Jim
Ahhh! home..... well not for more than 20 years now, but still..... them were the days eh, Rob?
 17.
My Shuker EUB is for sale in the FS section (page 3 i think lol), it's in a higher price bracket, but due to it's true upright fingerboard and bridge, you can bow on it as well as any acoustic double bass.
There are a couple of things worth mentioning - Sibob makes a good point - I have an NS Designs and you need to have a really light touch with a bow or you'll just strangle the note, but I've also played a Cetus Bridge, and that bows just like a real upright. There are huge differences between different makes so it's really worth trying before you buy. as Sibob also says, I've tried one that was like a bass guitar - completely flat across the strings so impossible to bow. On the subject of carbon fibre bows, if you're a beginner then a wood bow will be much more forgiving than a carbon one - apparently it's because the carbon stick is much stiffer than a wood one so you tend to get more "squeeks".
 18. That "posh stool" is £130 cheaper here http://musical-instrument-suppliers.co.uk/bassaccs.htm and £170 cheaper at thomanns http://www.thomann.de/gb/km_stehhilfe.htm !! I have one and they really are very good. I always knew that the contrabasse shoppe were expensive, but that's just a rip off!
 19.
Hi Daf Nice to hear from you, thanks for this, I'm playing double bass exclusivley at the momment, I need to really, so much to learn I think I will take you up on the shell case, I will need it for three weeks in November if it's free. Cheers Marti
Hi Marti, Yes, that's fine. What date will you need it from? (by shell, I assume you mean the stevenson?) I'll PM you my phone number. Jake, thanks for that, by the way! Cheers, Daf
 20. Hi Subaudio, Hope all's good with you - it's been a while, and it's good to see you getting on so well with the double bass! I have a couple of options which may be of help if you're interested.... It depends what you're after, but I have 2 cases believe it or not! One is a full flight case made by Alan Stevenson www.stevensoncases.co.uk Which I hire out for £50 per week (you must pick-up and return it, and it must be insured against loss or damage for £1500 whilst you're using it) The other is a very light case with a hard polystyrene shell and canvas covering which you can have for £10 a week. (this would be ok for say a van or truck where you're loadind/unloading it yourself but offers nowhere near as much protection as the stevenson (of course!) The other option is here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-4-DOUBLE-BASS-HARD...id=p3286.c0.m14 This looks the same as the lighter case that i have and is currently 99p!! (8 days to go) Hope that's of some use, Cheers, Daf

 23.
Stunning Bass, but i hate to be pedantic , Its not a "Progress" its an "Original" Wish i needed one Id have this off you in a shot Good luck with the sale
cheers for that, though the east built electronics package is the newer three band that they use in the progress 3, which is better quality than the original. perhaps the "custom" tag is better as it is a Progress 3 Deluxe with an original body shape.
 24. Probably sold..... Man that was quick!!
