2.
My Lord I think thats the most beautiful bass ive seen on here!! If you want a Bacchus Jazz with a J-Retro Let me know, eesh!
Thanks man, yes, she's a beaut' and I know lawrence was also very sad to see her go. another time and i may have been interested in the Bacchus but i have my Valenti jazz and that s2 classic is giving me what someone else described recently as "pocket pains" - PP.... mmm could this be the successor to GAS!?
 3. Been meaning to put this up for months and now i'm lusting after hugee's status s2 this really has to go..... It's the reissued original body shape (2001) with the new 3 band eq and has a poplar top (apparently cut from the same piece of wood as the one made for john entwistle). It's 36" scale, and there lies the root of the problem for me - i suffer from tendonitis and the extra stretch seems to make things worse. it's in great condition with just a few small pressure dings but nothing you'd notice unless you were really looking for them. i think that it may have had a refret at some point as the tops of some of the frets have a small amount of filler added (see pics), again it's really nothing but i want to mention everything. it used to belong to lozbass and below is his (far more detailed) description from the ebay ad when i bought it if you want a bit more background. Lawrence's description (hope that's ok lawrence!!) This is a custom order Overwater 5 string bass. This is a beautiful, near-mint, hand-built instrument, completed by Chris May in 2001. The bass is essentially an Overwater Progress III Deluxe but built around the company’s ‘Original’ body design. I had the pleasure of discussing the instrument with Chris at UK BassDay in November and he informed me that it’s almost unique – he’s just delivered a bass with the same spec (Progress III with an ‘original’ body) to the bass player in Alanis Morissette’s band. If you’ve played an Overwater, you’ll know what to expect. The craftsmanship is stunning and this particular instrument is very beautiful indeed: it plays, sounds and looks breathtaking. This is a real pro-quality bass and has a feel and finish that only comes with high-end, hand-built custom instruments. It’s a neck-through design (maple with purpleheart laminates) with Alder body wings (I think), a dark-reddish wing laminate and a beautiful figured-poplar full-face top. Chris confirmed that the poplar is from the same piece that was used for the facing on John Entwistle’s Overwater. The fretboard is an extraordinary, thick slab of birds-eye maple – the marking is subtle but lovely and a fabulous complement to the figured poplar body and head facings. The marker dots in the front of the board are gorgeous and highly-figured blue-green abalone. The small dots in the top of the board appear to be made from wood (ebony or black stain?). All the fittings, electronics and hardware are absolutely top quality. The fret and nut work is amongst the best I’ve ever seen (the bass looks almost unused and there is no fretware). The bridge is the standard, high-end recessed Overwater unit with heavy brass and multi-adjustable saddles. Tuners are Gotoh and extremely well-engineered and accurate. The electronics package is that found in the Progress III – two proprietary Overwater hum-cancelling soapbars and the John East designed three-band pre-amp (master volume plus bass, middle, treble and pickup blend with centre detents). The finish is tinted (honey-blond) lacquer with 35% satination (this brings out the grain of the timbers beautifully and looks really classy). Playability – the bass has a 36” scale. It was professionally re-strung and set-up (with new Overwater light guage strings) by Ade at Music Ground in Manchester (Ade is luthier to the stars – his client list is incredible). The intonation is perfect with gorgeous harmonics all over the board and no dead spots (you wouldn’t expect them in this price range but I’ve certainly found them on other high-end, custom instruments!) The neck has a medium D profile and is super-stable and extremely playable (it’s also super-fast!) The 36” scale delivers a fantastically taut and focused low B (honestly the best I’ve heard – have a look at some of the reviews). String tension across the instrument is generally very light. The scale is also very comfortable – I’m not tall but have no problems with the length – C and C# on the B are easily reachable with minimal wrist rotation. IMO the bass is fabulously playable – it’s a joy to look at and own and very hard to put down – it’s a real fun and funky instrument that just begs to be played. Sound – the electronics are superb – silent and powerful and eminently usable (I’m a big fan of East pre-amps – nothing extreme and unusable). There’s a massively wide range of tones available from the onboard pre and the instrument is highly versatile in general. With the eq flat, the sound is pokey, immediate, authoritative and controlled (indeed, it sounds slightly compressed – something I really love about boutique electronics). Judicious use of the eq can deliver pretty-much anything from gritty, aggressive, bright rock tones, through rich, lush and fat jazz tones, to mid-scooped, deep and fizzy slap. This bass has done everything I’ve asked of it tone-wise and always with real articulacy, class and authority. Condition – the bass is generally in superb condition with no nasty knocks, dings, scratches or dents. It was completed in 2001 and had clearly spent most of its life in the case before it came to me (and I’ve been very careful with it!) The hardware and electronics are all in superb condition and, overall the finish is near-mint (it was sold to me as ‘mint’ and I’ve caused no damage whatsoever). However, I’m very picky and always aim for full-disclosure…so, prospective buyers should note that the bass does have a few minor pressure indentations at the upper and lower bout edges. These do not go through the lacquer and are not visible from the front of the bass (indeed, you need to look to find them – I’ve seen ‘new’ basses on showroom floors with more - and more prominent - marks). There is also one very small indentation (almost unnoticeable, about 1 x 3mm) in the rear tummy contour and a tiny knock at the end of the head – beyond these minor flaws, the bass is in fabulous condition throughout. I asked Chris May and Ade about touching up the marks and both were incredulous – ‘why bother, they’re irrelevant and you’d have more than this in another fortnight of intensive playing’. Flight Case – the bass comes in a custom-built (for this instrument) full flight case supplied by ‘Specialist’ in Devon. I’ve played for years and this is honestly one of the best cases I’ve ever seen – top-of-the-range fittings and some lovely touches. It’s heavy but offers ultimate protection. It’s also in excellent condition – it has a few insignificant scrapes but looks almost new. To buy a new case like this would cost around £200. This is a stunning, custom bass built by one of the world’s top luthiers. The finish, sound and playability are exemplary – if you’ve never tried a top-end, hand-built, this will be a real treat! If you have, you still can’t fail to be impressed – this bass is something well out of the ordinary, even for a high-end instrument. It’s also a real head-turner - I used it on a couple of rock gigs a couple of months ago through a hired Ampeg SVT – apart from sounding thunderous it attracted a lot of attention and some serious admiration and compliments. I think the starting price represents a ridiculous bargain and the buy-it-now is more than realistic – this bass would come in at over £2400 if ordered from Overwater today (with the flightcase a very expensive additional cost).
 4. yeh, got a £10 off paypal voucher the other day..... was really pleased until i saw you got 10% off !!
 5. I was reading the first post and thinking, “hang on, I don’t think I agree with this - how many of us just followed this site without joining until it came to a point where we wanted to buy or sell something and then joined because we needed to in order to do that (myself included). The vast majority then go on to make a worthwhile contribution and become part of the community (again I hope to include myself in that – quality if not quantity….) then I saw the second post and laughed my a*s off!! The problem - if there is one - is that people, understandably, want the best price that they can get, and the “set a price and then take the best offer” method does not always work. hence people often use this “testing the water” to see what the market will take/offer. I came to the defence of one basschatter a while ago who had simply said in plain English what many others have implied – (he had said “best offers above £x”) only to be shot down in flames for suggesting that, even though it was not the normal way, it was still a legitimate method of selling. - the concern seemed to be that using this method automatically turned the for sale section into the monster that ebay has become, rather than understanding that the real problem with ebay is its size (which makes it difficult to police) and that the actual selling method is perfectly good (it wouldn’t have become the global brand that it is otherwise) Now before I take another hail of bullets, I want to say AGAIN (as I did a number of times in the previous thread) that I am NOT SUGGESTING THAT THIS BECOME THE NORMAL METHOD OF SELLING ON THIS SITE, but I think that being able to say “offers over £x” would solve a lot of the issues raised in this post and need not have a major impact on the way that the for sale section works. After all, what’s the real difference in starting high and getting offers below, or starting low and getting offers above?
 6. one of the main problems with denmark st. (of which there are many) is that most of the shops there are now owned by the same company - so they all carry the same stock! daft, but true. sound control (if it's still there!?!) on oxford st. was where i've ended up on many a very disappointed occasion.
 7.
First off the bass plays as well as any bass I've owned!
+1 on that.
I'll sell it with the Bart pickups included if you want a darker but really fat tone.
+ another one on that too - it really does have a huge fat sound with the Barts. (though I've never heard it with the Nordstrands) - It's a lovely instrument and if i can sell some of my basses i'll be coming after it! Good luck with the sale steve, - though I'm not sure I really mean that! I want this bass!! Daf
 8.
I cant recommend Stu Clayton's "Ultimate Slap Bass" and Ed Friedlands DVD "Ultimate Slap Bass Guide" -
Don't wish to be pedantic, but i guess you might want to add "highly enough" to the end of that??! I might have to check out Stu's book myself - need all the help I can get with this! Daf
 9.
Hi dmz, Did I read in a recent thread your from Wales? Are you near Cardiff? I had mine done by Dave Dearnley in Splott, he did a great job took him about a fortnight, I have a pic somewhere if you're interested and I think his number is in the "Recommended Luthier thread
+1 for Dave!! used to do all the work on my warwick fretless - fingerboard skimming etc. until i moved away.
 10.
I think the idea of auctions on here is silly and it isn't going to work.
fair enough; but please READ what i said:
i'm not saying it should become the preferred method for selling on BC
.....
but it's not completely invalid in all cases.
like maybe, as you said:
unless of course it is a unique instrument where the value of it is unsure.
there are no rules that i know of that say that bnt can't sell like this and he was quite clear in his first post.
The seller should ideally put a firm asking price and not invite offers
apart from a few cases it always ends up as offers anyway, it's just whether they are below the initial asking price or above an initial "reserve". anyway bnt, good luck with your sale; we'll stop hijacking your thread now. it's saved you a few "bumps" anyway! daf
 11. yeh, it is a shame that there was the misunderstanding about his sale and i'm sure it'll work out.
Lets keep Basschat pure and based entirely on the trust of a great community which I'm proud to say has always been incredibly fair and honest to me, and I'd like to keep it that way.
there seems to be association between auctions with a lack of trust - almost certainly from experience of ebay - and i quite understand that; but when ebay first started it was a pretty safe place with trust between buyers and sellers, it just got too big... If something was sold on BC by auction it wouldn't make any of us less trustworthy, after all we're only talking about the mechanism for finding a price - start low and go up or start high and come down.
Plus, auctions often end up with you getting less for an item than you envisaged. Who's to say that the Chapman Stick would have ended up selling for £600
in my experience that happens however you try and sell something!
 12. Jebo1, I agree that auctions have their own set of issues, but whether they're overall "a very bad idea" is, i think, another question. one thing they would stop is people saying "i've seen them new cheaper/not much more than that" etc. which is an issue that has been discussed on many occasions here and is a bit unfair to the seller - unless of course they're blatantly taking the p**s! as you say "it's only worth as much as someone is willing to pay!" and isn't an auction just another way of finding out? i'm not saying it should become the preferred method for selling on BC but it's not completely invalid in all cases.
 13. bnt, i feel for you man! "I'm looking for offers starting at £600." fairly obviously an "auction" rather than a "first come first served" - and just because it may not have been done before on the site doesn't mean it's not a good idea - particularly for a popular item like this.... maybe we'll see more "ebay" style sales on here - as much as we all dislike what ebay has become the original format was obviously a successful one!! Daf
 14. saw the header and thought you were lonely...
 15. bassace - just read my last post - what i meant was that i use obligatos on my URB not my EUB doh! i've corrected the last post - it might make some sense now.
 16.
Daf made it sound like Stanley Clarke!!)
whoa! steady now! ...... the tenner's in the post!
 17.
Hi Daf, thanks and 'looks like Malta - another six months or so slaving in Manchester's half light first though!
well, it'll help you to appreciate that beautiful maltese sunshine all the more! - very nice i'll have to come and visit!
 18.
Hi Daf, It looks like you're enjoying reason 4! It's a beauty and you're photography is much better than mine. Cheers, Lawrence
aah, well, you see the light's much better here than it is in manchester and yes, i most certainly am enjoying it!! still getting used to that 36" scale though.... .... but well worth the effort. hope things are ok with you - any decision on a destination yet? cheers, daf
 19.
lol thanks for the reply, although I sold the EUB a few months ago now!!!
20. cheers steve, thanks for doing that for me... russ, my 'ray's HH as well - i do love the warmer tone from the two pups together - great sound for both fingerstyle and slap - not that i slap if i can help it - 15 or so years just playing fretless have left me somewhat lacking in that department! as for the valenti - if you decide that you'd like to take a closer look, i'm in central london all next week (6pm - 10pm) (1pm - 10pm on wednesday) if that's any use? cheers, daf
 21.
Hi- are those last couple of frets on a fretboard extension over the body? I can't quite see- I was wondering if it'd be possible to remove fret 23 and 24 if this was the case. R
hi, there is a bit of an extension as i recall, unfortunately the bass is with flanker at the mo on trial (though it doesn't look like it's quite right for him), and i can't remember how far it goes under - i'll give him a ring and see if he can help us out... just out of interest, why would you want to remove the last two frets? is it to aid slapping? or to reduce weight actually i shouldn't joke - i know mountain bikers who have done worse daf
