2.
Before I order a NS tripod stand for me Aria can someone who has one tell me what the thread size is?
hi mikeh, only just noticed this "thread" - i'm away alot - and as it's been two and a half months you've probably just given up and bought it! however, if it's any use.... given it's american i guess they still use imperial in which case it's 1/4" (about 7mm). cheers, daf
 3. yeh, we could be talking some serious mojo
 4.
Sorry guys, I couldn't help myself ...
can we take it from that that you're the bidder?!?
 5.
I know you're a Corelli fan and I must try some sometime, once I've got used to the Stig - I find that after a URB you have to be a lot more careful with the intonation because it speaks more readily. This also means that if you're used to playing in front of the beat, as I am, on an EUB you're even more infront! Ah happy days.
yeh, i know what you mean the tone and the attack of an EUB really are half way back to an electric, i guess maybe it's largely down to there being much more midrange than with a URB?? as far as the corellis are concerned - i've been a fan since i tried them on a friends bass about 15 years ago, but strangely, i actually use obligatos on my current (of about 6 years) URB.. probably because more recently my URB playing has been much more classicaly orientated so i wanted a darker more mellow sound that the synthetic core gives. that said i have been meaning to try the corellis on this bass - trial and error is such an expensive business!!
 6. chrisdabass and flanker, PMs sent cheers, daf
 7.
Yes, a lot of the sound comes from the right hand, doesn't it. I am just using piezo because I didn't get much of a blend from the mag. Are you telling me that hybrids won't work with the mag - I thought they should (doh!)
yeh, i found that they just don't seem to have enough steel in them to give a decent signal to the mag, even though they have a steel core... whereas, bizarrely, the corellis' have a good strong tone with the mag but have a rope core and just nickle winding... very strange.... bob gollihur talks about the how different strings work with a mag - doesn't have the hybrids there unfortunately but does mention the corellis, for example http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product/1452-...RINGS_SETS.html
 8.
The singer didn't notice until two numbers before the end - but what do you expect?
yeh, the hybrids are a good string, just a shame they didn't seem to work well with the magnetic pup... i think half the battle with getting that upright sound is making you really work hard for every note ....unfortunately i take it you just use the piezo with those strings?
 9.
I came very close to bidding on that Overwater... Hope it plays and sounds as good as it looks.
yeh, i must admit i'm really happy with it, it bridges the gap between my parker and my stingray really well - a bit more subtle and refined than the 'ray but with more punch and wood than the parker! i've also always liked the shape - i remember them the first time round! a bit quirky without making too much of a statement in the way that a thunderbird or a vee would... actually that shape has caused a small problem... anyone know of a good custom gig bag maker in the uk? with that body and the 36" scale, i can't find one to fit!
 10.
Gorgeous, that's just the kind of thing I'd entertain if it were 17mm (I've got girly small hand!).
thanks G-bitch, yeh i have similar problems, i'm only about 5'7" - so i do find the neck a bit chunky; i wasn't able to try it out before i bought it so just had to go for it. I don't find it a big problem but it just means it's not the first bass i would go to pick up and play by choice. cheers
 11.
Daf - Definitely, I been real busy with uni, are you going to the bassbash? Oh I intend to record some examples soon, i'm just in the middle of exams at the moment.
hi ash, not sure if i'm going to make the bash, but i will definitely try - it's not exactly a long way for me! hope exams are going well and not too much of a bore! talk soon...
 12. hey ash, nice work man! very neat - it's good to see that bass getting the love and attention it deserves! i look forward to hearing the clips... hope you're doing o.k. - be good to meet up again sometime soon. daf
 13.
Of course you may say that I put something nicely , and if I may reciprocate your observations were equally eloquent. 'Chuck E' is one of my favourite rhythm tracks of all time so I'm with you on that. where Jazz is concerned I was lucky enough to play with Steve Brown quite a lot up in Manchester, his ride cymbal is a joy to get on and I couldn't agree more about 'making it sound like one note' Jake
i know what you mean about steve, we used to play together quite a bit when we were in college in manchester - a lovely player... i haven't seen him in years... i don't know if this is strictly kosher - mods please let me know if you have a problem with this... hairyhatman - in case you don't have it - have a listen
 14.
Thanks for the offer Daf. To be honest I haven't played it that much of late, but I've got a bit of duo work coming up that hopefully I'll use if for - so I'll persevere with what I've got for a bit. I'm going to lift the action a bit and I've also picked up a Behringer acoustic simulator that I'm gonna experiment with. I'm In the process of recording 'moondance' as a demo, using the NS with the acoustic simulator - I'll let you know when I post it on our myspace site so you can have a listen. Col
accoustic simulator.... nope, never heard of it! but you've definitely piqued my interest - i look forward to hearing it. cheers, daf
 15.
In my mind locking in with the kick is about sharing space in the music, as you are both producing a similar frequency sound, often together, so its good to marry them up. If you aim to allow the percussion of the kick sound to be the absolute front point of your note, ('cos the drum envelope obviously closes almost instantly) then the developement of your note however short takes place after the drum. If you can achieve this with a good degree of consistency it will sound great. If you can achieve this with near perfect consistency then with the right moves you could end up being a very highly payed player. Its almost a science but with an enourmous amount of feel chucked in Jake
+1 for that and, if i may say, very nicely put too! another way to look at it is that all drummers "place" things differently in the bar - it's what gives different drummers a different feel - (perhaps most famously Steve Gadd's lovely "late" snare back beat) try listening to "Chuck e's in love" by Ricky Lee Jones but if you tried to place the "one" say, with the kick and your 16ths with a pushy high hat and play 2 & 4 with a late snare it's gonna end up sounding a bit of a mess so the idea is that you take your time more from the kick and not bits of everything.... now i'm going to qualify that statement because different styles require a different approach- it's stays pretty true for styles with fairly straightforward basslines like rock and latin, however if you're a funk 16th note man then, of course, the high hat becomes more important and in fact in jazz it's the ride cymbal that you tend to listen to. i think a lot of it is just down to experience and as others have said - really get to know your drummer. uh... maybe not... all that said, if you can make your drummers kick and any note you place with it sound like one note you're well on the way!
 16.
Funny that he's only showing pics of the front of the guitar. Jon.
i guess he's only showing the front because once it's in it's glass case stuck on the wall of some banker's house that's all you'll see anyway
 17.
It could help to adjust the action on the NS. Mine turned from a big fretless bass into an OK substitute for a double bass when it is just impossible to get to the gig with a double bass, with a few turns of an allen key to raise the bridge.
that's true, mine is up as high as it will go and it is definitely much better for it... fnar fnar.... Col, i'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you... and that you weren't as impressed as i'd hoped you would be, if you would like to try something a bit heavier i have a set of helicore hybrids that went on my stick and came straight back off again - (the problem with them is that they don't work well with the magnetic pup) but if you would like to experiment with a heavier string you're welcome to give them a try. Blimming post office and there £8 international handling charge - what's that all about!!?? oh dear... think i got away with that one.... sorry! that said, now you've had the corellis on for a while, any further thoughts? daf
 18. wow! you know, at first, i thought they'd posted black and white photos!

 20. O.K. guys and gals, I bought this beauty off eubassix about 4-5 months ago for a very specific job – the musical “we will rock you”. I needed a bass that would do a good impression of a precision and a jazz, which with the single coil/humbucker switch on each pickup and the active/passive switch overall this does perfectly…. and so much more! O.K. so the next question is… why do I want to sell it already? Well…. Three reasons actually…. 1. I’m not doing much work on that show at the moment so having a bass just for that is a bit o.t.t…. particularly when you consider that… 2. I now have an endorsement deal with Musicman so have a lovely 20th anniversary HH stingray which also does a pretty good impression of a precision with the neck humbucker solo'd. 3. At 19mm the string spacing on the Valenti feels a bit chunky next to my other basses - 17.5mm on the stingray 17.25 on the parker and 16.5 on the warwick (that I’ve played for 17 years!) So it’s not my favourite bass to play – though this is, of course, just personal preference… actually there is one other reason... 4. but that's another story... back to the Valenti.... I paid £800 for it and spent £265 (plus a set of elixirs) getting it into top condition – replaced a noisy pot; had the control cavity properly (and IMO beautifully) shielded with copper and had it properly set up. All done by a genius – Mark Willmott in Aylesbury – not cheap, but this guy has 30 years experience with Gibson for a start, and knows more about woods than anyone else i’ve ever met. He also has a client list that reads like a who’s who… (actually, i must add his details to the "recommended repairers" list). Swamp Ash body with Natural finish 34" Scale with 19mm spacing at the bridge Wenge Neck with black laminate headstock face Wenge Board Nordstrand DC5’s Dual Coil pickups Aguilar OBP-3 Black Hardware Hipshot A Style Bridge Hipshot Ultralites Tuners Weight 9.5lbs the hard case in the pics won't be included i'm afraid (the pics are from an earlier sale and the case didn't come with the bass when i bought it) for a bit of "provenence" and more pics check out these links... http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=230862 http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=296972 http://valentibasses4.blogspot.com/ (page 4) 1-Volume w/p/p for preamp bypass 2-Blend 3-Treble w/p/p for Neck position P/U for Humbucker mode to Single Coil mode 4-Mids with w/p/p for Mid Shift 5-Bass w/p/p for Bridge position P/U for Humbucker mode to Single Coil mode there are a few very minor dings one just below the volume pot and three tiny ones on the end of the headstock which i tried to photo but didn't have much luck, this was the best i could do: so... how much? well it's cost me over a grand all in but i realise that it's probably unrealistic to expect to get that back (though i wouldn't argue if you insisted!) so, if i say offers, bearing in mind that i realise that i'm going to lose out in this deal....? cheers, daf
 21. I tried the Adagios - they stayed on for 2 days...... think i gave them a fair chance - wanted to take them off after 2 mins! they say that they have an anti rust coating so, as i use elixirs almost exclusively, i wondered if they could possibly compete. err... no.
 22. where are you based?
 23. hi col, just wondering ifyou've received those strings yet, and if so, what you thoughts are on them?..... he asked nervously.....
