sorry about that! should have been quicker off the mark! well if you don't like them i'll take them off your hands for what you payed for them; can't say fairer than that!! as for the albion arms, it's not a place i know, but i'm trapped in the world of musical theatre so i don't get out much...

hey col, i've just noticed where you are.... i'm in Amptill - only 20 mins from milton keynes so if you want to try the corellis on an NS stick i'd be happy to meet up! daf

I think the problem most people have with the original strings is that they sound more like a fretless bass than a double bass, this is certainly what i've found; and they are horrible if you use a bow! I can wholeheartedly recommend Corelli made by savarez, not easy to get in the uk but i got a set here: http://www.gollihurmusic.com/category/5-STRINGS.html a fairly thin string with a bit more tension than the NS (but not too much) and work well with the magnetic pickup. I paid £100 for a 5 string set (a 4 string set is currently $105) so they're well priced too! (I've always liked these on double bass too, especially for jazz.) daf
better get a spare set..... If they do stop selling them in this f**king country I will gladly go abroad to get them.
+1 to that! if the distibutor that john is thinking of is strings and things then yes they have stopped, but i think westside (the people behind boogie and martin) have taken over. - unless this is old news and they've now stopped as well!!
I'm not sure if my friends Ric is stock or retro-defretted, i'll ask him and see what kinda pics and clips i can get! Si
fair enough, cheers, daf

cheers ash, it was good to meet you, and hopefully it helped change your mind about warwicks too. see you soon! "My friend has a fretless Ric" si, you know it's funny, when i met ash (metalmaniac) the other day he told me about his friends fretless ricky as well, but that was a "custom" defret; is your friend's a "factory" one? i'd imagine it has quite a distinctive sound! a picture would be great if you have time; sound clips is probably asking too much?!? . as for too many knobs; i do find that i set a range of sounds to suit the situation i'm playing in and then just use the pick-up pan as a tone control, it's a bit like an engineer setting up the sound for a room then just "tweaking" during the gig. i think of the huge range of controls as being a way to find the best sound that's in a bass and then pretty much leaving it....you can't improve on perfection.... "Well as a result of this thread, I've just ordered one to go in my Pedulla Buzz. Would it be OK to add my review to this thread?" i bet that's going to sound fantastic! i look forward to reading your review - it'll be good to see if you think it's as great as i do! (i do hope so - i'm gonna feel kinda responsible!! ) i'll adjust the title to show there are two reviews when you've posted it. do you think you'll be able to add some sound clips too? i'd really love to hear what that sounds like! daf
Sorry Daf If it helps I can put some sound samples up when I get it
i refer you to my earlier post..... (go on rub it in, why don't you........ wink.gif ) seriously though, nice one mate, i saw it about 10 mins before you posted, just wasn't quick enough! i think the best man won oh and yes, some sound clips would be great!... thou i'll just end up getting a 5 string fretless made by rob....not that that would be any bad thing! enjoy!
I find Bartolini pickups work really well in very 'woody' basses. They sound the opposite of what you describe - I think they might be warmer and deeper sounding and let the bass speak for itself. Perhaps worth checking out.. ped
funny you should say that ped, i had a thumb 6 with barts on it and i had to have the bass up full as simbass described to stop it being too toppy. i've found the emgs have a warmer sound! wierd..
Pop an acg pre in there you will be able to find a tone you like or very probably the jazz tone your after. Very versitile system. Not the cheapest option but food for thought.
i've got emg's and the acg pre-amp on my thumb (bass that is ) and there's a review of it with some sound clips here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=3919 it's a fretless but you will get an idea of what the pre is capable of... daf
That's a brilliant review there daf. I'm pretty excited as my ACG isn't far away from being ready. Hmm... you've got me thinking, my Warwick fretless already has 4 holes in it
thanks greeneking, i do think that the pre-amp could have been designed specificaly with a warwick in mind. it just seems to bring out the "wood" so well. by the way, my offer still stands, if anyone wants to get "hands on" i'm happy to meet up.

don't know if it's any use, but i've put some sound clips here; http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=3919&st=0 it's a review of a pre-amp , but i'm using elixir nanoweb 45-125, they're only short clips but they may give you another frame of reference; the most useful is probably "GENERAL1" i do wonder if the polymer coating may help protect the fingerboard aswell. it seems to have worn less quickly since i started using them! cheers, daf
another one here to say, great review. easy to understand (no babbling) and useful soundclips. in fact, it was a little TOO good. i need one now....
thanks, it's nice to know it makes sense! i did wonder if i was "going into one" when i wrote it! you know, i'm beginning to think i should be on commission! ^_^ only joking alan!!
