1. Cheers 7string. I think it is everything i want in a bass just now so i am hopeful.
2. I'm going to try and soak them in Vodka. Don't know if or why it would work but it seems more rock and roll
3. That Victor Bailey version of the Jaco song was awful. Woeful infact.
4. Nice one Shep it looks amazing. At some point when I am back in notts we need to have an erb bass bash.
5. I have an epic which is one of the cheaper models. No problems with balance on mine. It is quite heavy but not crippling. It sounds immense nothing I have played has the sound. However the finish on mine is not great I don't think it scratches far too easily. The construction is spot on.
6. Seeing the top on your bass almost made me go for an ebony top for my 7 string. The simple look of the wood is very elegant.
7. Good times. I would love to have a crack on that.
8. Yeah Alan mentioned he had spoken to Robbie. Its a cheap solution to the dark stage problem and doesn't involve batteries. Sounds great in principle but we will have to wait and see.
9. Yeah I am so excited about it. I love the overall simplicity aesthetically. I have always fancied a ramp and the luminlays seem so cool. Have you heard about them yet? You basically shine a little torch on the side dots and they will illuminate for like half an hour
10. Cheers Alan i will keep that in mind.
11.
Not going for the filter pre?
Nope. I have the filter preamp in my recurve though. This bass is designed to gig and tour with. I wanted something simple to adjust on the fly. Might be a bad move not going for the filter preamp but we will see.
12. Cheers guys. I think its everything i want.
Sorry we haven't had a chance to meet up so you could see the brushed black in the flesh... but it looks like you've gone for it anyway. Good call! Looking forward to seeing the build take shape...
Not to worry. I wanted to get the spec sorted so i have just gone with it i dont think i will regret it . for anyone who is interested here is a preview pic of the Mango f/board.
13. I have been to see Alan and have started a build diary. Check it out if you are interested spec wise.
14. Well the snow cleared up sufficiently for me to get up to Moffat to finalise the spec for my new bass. I am pretty damn excited at this point. Why a 7 string? Basically i play in a tech/prog metal band and my guitarists are moving to 8 strings from 7. I was already playing my ACG 6 and using its full range and i didnt want to sacrifice a high string for another low so i have decided to take the leap. Why go custom? I am Left handed and have a very set idea on what i wanted. It is very difficult to buy lefty 7s off the peg and they are all mega bucks. Why ACG? My interest in ACG basses began when i saw pictures of Steves lefty 6 string on this very site I used to look at it and lust every few days. Long story short Steve found it hard to get used to the 6 strings and moved it on and i got it from Wildus. ACG was the right choice for me because: 1) The asymmetrical neck 2) The flat f/board 3) Endless options 4) Builder being local ish 5) I love the designs 6) My 6 string is one of my favourite basses. 7) Awesome pickups So the spec: Recurve S type body Alder body with Brushed black Laquer finish Mad Mango fretboard 7 piece Wenge and Maple neck RFS triple coil p/up built into a wooden ramp all black hardware 18mm spacing Liminlay side markers. John East 3 band Preamp That is the basic plan now the hard part....... waiting. Comments welcome
15. Welcome back. I am interested to see pics of your NOE bass and of the chav bass.
16. Lots of good reasons why people have a low string have already been stated but for me in my band i couldn't play the songs the way i would want to play them without the 6. my guitarists play 7 strings tuned to A and the root of the riffs if you like are played on this A string. Sure i could play them in the same octave rather than an octave below and sometimes i do this but most of the time the overall sound of the band benefit from the low bass. I could play a four tuned AEAD but then i would loose the G string and i use that a lot in our songs. Now for the C string sure i could play these notes/parts further up the neck on a 4 string or a a 5 but in my opinion the notes sound very different up the neck and on the C string sometimes its the right sound and sometimes its not. I really don't like the sound of playing some of my percussive and slapped bits past the 12th fret i think it looses the "crack" for lack of a better word. I don't just use me 6 string to go widdle widdle widdle there are practical uses. I hope this brief explanation helps some people see why i use a 6 and not a 4 but ultimately its about playing whats needed for the song. If i was playing a pop song that didn't need either the low B or high C strings i would still use my 6 string but just use the middle 4 strings. There is a time and a place. I don't play piano but i imagine that piano players don't use the full range of the piano in every song. Although like i say i don't play.
17. Ok i have had a look on his site the epoxied necks do look amazing. I would be interested to hear about the results.
18. Never heard of this chap, so what is so special about his work? Hell i guess a two year waiting list speaks for itself.
19. If i had to choose right now like Shep i would go for a 6. However I play five string in one my bands that doesn't warrent the 6 string and i love playing 4 string too. Like Shep says its all about using the extra notes in the right place not shoe horn them in. I am planning to go to a 7 string soon though as my guitarists are going to 8 strings.
20. Dread Bass

22.
@ Dread Bass Hey man!! I remember that gig, was a right laugh! Your bass look awesome, 6 strings is just beyond me I will bring it to the bass bash if your coming??? What gigs have you got lined up, if I'm not gigging I will lend it ya for a gig.
Spot on buddy. My 6 string is an ACG and it's a beast, though I am planning to go to a 7 soon. :s Gigs wise I'm playing a studio gig on Carlton road tonight then the gaff in London on Wednesday. They are both with taken by the tide. Then I think we have some gigs coming up on with bloodguard soon. I know we are playing with illuminatus some time. I am going to try and make it down to the bass bash if I can. I see you got the gorgoroth gig. That's going to be a great gig. I will try to be there.
23. Yeah I've seen it but he wants like 2200 euro and I can't afford that.
24. Hey Dan We have gigged together before I am in Taken by the Tide and BloodGuard (was Threnody). I have been wanting to get a gramma pad ever since i borrowed your cab as that was the best bass sound i ever remember getting at the central and getting a good sound there was near impossible. Andy
