A quick drop D is all I use occasionally , but the times I forget to wind it back up
Thankfully I've only done that at rehearsals so far.... But oh the embarrassment! LOL!
-
I tune to drop D on stage and it only takes a few seconds. The reason I keep two basses on stage is I need my fretless and my fretted..... If I had one to allow for a low D I'd either have to bring my 5 string along as well!! much rather do a quick drop tune!

This one is even better, but leaves less room for a logo http://www.firelabel.co.uk/t-shirts/womens/scoop-neck-t-shirts/11385-sols-ladies-melrose-t-shirt.html

Luke, the neck on that one does look a little high, this one is better http://www.firelabel.co.uk/t-shirts/womens/crew-neck-t-shirts/61372-fruit-of-the-loom-lady-fit-value-t-shirt.html
BUT I currently do not own any T shirts with slogans on and the reason is that they always seem to be printed on really naff T shirts which do not suit a woman of my shape. They always seem to have really high, tight, round necks which look hideous on a woman with a large chest. And at my age they make me look like a batty old volunteer in an animal shelter. So, Luke, if you have any option to think about the style of T shirt as well, please consider V necks, low cut round necks and more fitted styles. (I'm probably a niche market though )
Shell, Zazzle do some styles suited to ladies like ourselves More fitted and scooped necks.... That's where I have been buying my bass t-shirts. Luke, being a hobby related t-shirt whore (I have a gazillion chicken related ones as well ) if you could do cool logos with tshirts suited to women, I'd defo give them a go
Best musical one I have seen that was worn by a local bassist was "667, Neighbour of the Beast"
My friend has that one, always makes me giggle when he wears it..... His wife HATES it!

Sounds like you had a blast Shell I agree you have to rock it up more if you have supporters The collapsing drum kit is one way to end a challenging song
are you keeping your forearm still or moving it? the way i (try) to do it is point your index finger out and imagine a line thorugh your finger all the way up to your elbow joint all the movement and effort comes from hand/wrist/forearm rotating around this axis allowing the thumb to bounce against the string the same way a piano hammer strikes a string - effectively the thumb itself can remain fairly passive its your arm that is using your thumb as a hammer hope that makes sense
It is a whole movement from my forearm
-
My G string is a 0.4 (again careful now ) My teacher reckons this is fine enough for me at the moment I have a cracking red mark on my thumb knuckle!!

I have LOADS of Bass t-shirts.... Amongst my favourites are "Fear the Bass Player", "Yes I'm a girl, yes I play bass, any more questions", "I play the bass to keep the aliens away" (which has a person playing a bass and an alien covering it's ears! LOL)

I'm an up slapper

My left hand is joining the party! Slowly, but it is joining
Are you striking the string with your thumb knuckle? I knew someone who struggled pronoucing notes because he was almost palm muting as he did it, which made the whole thing muddy and awkward to hear and watch.
The pain is around my knuckle so I guess so Doesn't help that I have teeny tiny thumbs, they really are rather mutantly small compared to my fingers My teacher says that my technique is improving, but I want to be able to practice it for longer before I have to give in to the throbbing!!
If your thumb is hurting after 15 minutes then you're hitting the strings to hard with it. How is slapping the start of "One of theses days" being "authentic" BTW? The original was played with a pick (in fact I seem to recall reading that it's two basses, being played by Roger & David).
The live versions (which we are trying to copy) is one bass, played slap with a delay.
It's natures way of protecting the rest of us...
Damn you anti slappers Don't get me wrong Ian, it's not my aim to go to the next London Bass show and slap at 20 miles an hour and show off However, to change dynamics in a song, some slapping is very useful..... And being in a Floyd tribute band, if I want to be authentic in "One of these days" I need to slap the start
-
I know there is the anti slapping brigade here However, I want to be a holistic bassist, so I am learning such wonderful techniques as slap bass, double tapping, pinched harmonics etc etc. Well, I have been working on my slapping today.... I am getting much better at it, although I am very slow in tempo. What I do find is that give me 15 mins of slapping and I get a very sore thumb!! Then I have to stop and do some traditional playing. I'm hoping that my thumb will get used to it, as the only way I am going to get my tempo up is if I can practice, however, due to my throbbing thumb, I am restricted to about 15 mins a day!! So for fellow slappers, any tips for my thumb? Or is it a case of no pain, no gain. (and yes, anti slap brigade, I do think there is a definite gain in slapping!!)

Do you have your own personaity on the bass.?
SpaceChick replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I suppose it depends on a few factors..... How long has your friend been playing.... Does he have the skills to have a "voice"...... Does he have the confidence to make something his own..... Or does he want to be true to the original. I suppose it's the difference between competence and expression. If I look at the gig I did Friday night.... I played my basslines well and accurately but I have not yet developed my own expression. The bassist in the band after me who has 30 years experience was very much making basslines his own and was a joy to watch (and I learned a lot from watching him). If your friend is competant and is enjoying what he is doing, I don't think it's fair to be too critical of him just because you feel he lacks a creative flare. Let's face it 99% of punters don't notice what is going on down the low end as long as things are pounding along nicely! -
Thanks very much for those kind words, Ad! Finding a decent drummer is such a pain in the arse, as I'm sure you know! I'm seriously thinking of taking up the drums myself if it means never having to look for another one!
If you do that can I be your bassist
-
Well my pedal settings on my Boss GT10b for Sorrow went down a storm at rehearsal last night!! Haven't listened to the rehearsal recording yet, but can't wait. So all I can say is thanks Guy!! All down to you, you top man. So please don't leave... I may need more help as we increase our setlist from the Floyd back catalogue
