You're very kind, but I've already got one... facing east, left leg up on the mantlepiece, with my right hand waiting. Next week I'll be mostly standing on one leg and whistling underwater.
honestly... as if you are supple enough to get your leg on the mantlepiece!! This post means nothing without photos

band finance and tax, exciting huh??!
SpaceChick replied to BassInMyFace's topic in General Discussion
I know many people look at themselves as part self employed individuals, so look at themselves with their share, rather than the band as a whole. I contacted the Inland Revenue, and they are only interested if you make more than you spend... By the time you take into account rehearsal fees, fuel, car wear and tear, equipment etc I haven still in a big deficit... But I can imagine if you are in a successful band that could be different. Would be interested to hear what people think when you look at the band as a business as opposed to your role in the band. -
I think that BC is a great community. Personally I LOVE OT, you can always find something to make you giggle, yet on the other hand I can think of several threads where the community has rallied for a member in need (myself included). Yes, you get some contentious threads, but you get those in other sections too. I also think the £20 fee is fair, if you don't want to pay it, don't sell anything If I had to be hyper critical, I do find it intriguing sometimes when some threads are removed/locked, yet something that seems more of a concern is let to ride. However, it just proves that Mods and admin are humans too, with their own opinions on what is right or wrong. I adore the place and am honoured to have met some wonderful real life and virtual friends that I wouldn't have if it hadn't been for BC!

Where did the sex or gigging thread go?
SpaceChick replied to waynepunkdude's topic in General Discussion
Blimey, I've seen far worse threads stay put?!? I know moderators have a thankless job, but think this was a bit hasty! -
Sex. Is playing live as good, not as good, or better for you?
SpaceChick replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Hard to answer this one..... Currently, performing live for me is a real buzz (vibrator pun half intended as I'm currently not getting that WOW moment from performing with my band mates) However, I'm sure that when you are performing with other musicians where it all "comes together" then that would be rather fantastic. So based on that, I will have to for me say at the time being that they are incomparable. -
Entrance music? I dream of a gig where I can justify entrance music...!! Our gigs tend to be waiting for the crappy pub landlord to give us the nod before the guitarist tries to shout an hello down the mike before we burst into our first sub standard number!
Dlioch yn fawr am y groeso Erm, I'm not actually Welsh I'm afraid I'm English but I have been living in Wales for 30 years. One or two Welsh people have been kind enough to say that makes me an honorary Welshman anyway.
30 years, you've been here long enough to have seen the light!!! Yep, you qualify
I play a lowly SR300 & it's the best Bass i've ever owned. I shudder to think of what the top end ones play like. ***stares into space with that "one day" look in his eyes***
I'm with you Fumps, I LOVE my Ibanez SR300! I have been eyeing up the SR500s too. I'd be too scared to take a really expensive bass to a gig!!

What to do when things are seemingly impossible
SpaceChick replied to timmo's topic in General Discussion
At 4 weeks I wouldnt worry too much about scales just yet.....just get to know where the notes are on the fretboard and I agree that some 12 bar blues is a good starting point! Don't be hard on yourself.... And remember to have fun -
Good solid playing for only 10.5months or otherwise! If I may comment on technique, left hand looks like you've been taking lessons for 10 months and have been taught well, or you are very observant of the best bass players, it's spot on! Right hand technique can be much bolder to reflect this and get a punchy sound. I would recommend lifting the hand away from the bass and forming a bridge, anchored by your thumb with fingers a dancing (have a look at jamesbass116 excellent Jamaroquai rendition just above yours for example - his wrist looks a sharp angle but I suspect if he was standing his elbow would come forward easing that angle).
Thanks thats great feedback. I do have lessons and my teacher is AWESOME!! I agree that my right hand lets my left hand down, but I am working hard on this

How soon after first picking a bass up did you gig?
SpaceChick replied to bobpalt's topic in General Discussion
Hee hee, I've inspired a thread You know my answer already!! In fairness, I could have gigged sooner, I joined the band after 2 months, but its taken 8 and a half months (due to changes of band members and illnesses) to have enough stability to perform! I'm a much better bassist now that I was when I joined, so on reflection, I'm glad I had to wait this long as my performance would have been very different in the early days!! -
2 questions: What's it like having groupies? Where can I get this t-shirt????
1 A bit embarrassing if I'm honest!! 2 Zazzle Edit to add link to t-shirt... I had it on a black tshirt. http://www.zazzle.co.uk/yes_i_am_a_girl_text_only_play_bass_purple_tshirt-235291401826389991

Yey, I can officially post to this thread (well technically I should wait until past midnight but I'm sure you'll forgive me in my excitement) So dear bass chatters, today, 10 and a half months after picking up a bass, I have performed infront of a real life audience!!! With our charity gigs looming, we decided to try out some of our set at a local jam night! We were told we would be able to do 2 or 3 numbers.... But when we were up there they asked us to do a fourth I was shaking like a leaf!! I can't believe how nervous I was. The first song started, and because they provide the back line I couldn't hear myself, so I had to step forward infront of the PA speaker to hear my bass!! We performed "Mercury Blues", "Badge", "Can't get enough of your love" and "Need your love so bad". Several people came on to me afterwards to compliment my bass playing!! I have recorded the tracks (thanks Discreet for the Zoom recorder recommendation) and so will listen to them tomorrow to analyse where I can improve on my playing. I probably sounded sh*t with shaking fingers!!! But right now I am on cloud nine!!! It was bloody fantastic to perform!!! Hee hee, I'm actually a proper real life bassist now!!!! I was wearing a t-shirt saying "Yes, I'm a girl... Yes, I play bass... Any more questions?" and a guy came up to me and said "I have a few questions, can I have your number and can I take you on a date?" I laughed, then he said "I'm being serious, you are beautiful and you are brilliant on the bass"!!! I politely declined saying how sweet it was of him, but I'm a very happily married woman.... But it's given me a real confidence boost!! I'm a happy bassist tonight!!

I loved the suggestion of "The Mangetout experience" but now that Monkeys have been brought into to equation how about.... The Mangetout Monkeys Or (Having learned Spanish a bit where I'm quite sure Monkey is Mono) The Mono Mangetout? However, that implies you may never have a stereo sound.... Oh this is too hard.... I'll get my coat!

Some sellers will mark it as a gift so you don't need to pay tax.

Be gentle! I've only been playing 10 and a half months!! Here is my version of Iron Maiden - Ides of March
