That sounds like a blast , and it would appear you have knocked a bit of confidence into the first lot , well done
I don't know about that but they approved of my set order I was playing their stuff tonight though, and realising that it wasn't a challenge for me..... Where as my audition this afternoon I really had basslines that stepped me up a gear.... And I bloody loved it
-
Oh don't worry, my new band is coming first!!!!!! Their material is more challenging for me as a bassist and will help my development not halt it like the old bands set! In fairness, I can seeing me doing the charity gigs with the old band and then bowing out once they've found a new bassist (although I know someone who will probably dep temporarily if I leave anyway)
-
I get on great with Ibanez basses (4 and 5 string) as they are slim neck. Although I do find if I'm doing lots of hammer ons between frets 1 and 3 that my wrist and hands to tire quickly as I don't have the hand size of men

Welllll.....have I had an awesome day as a bassist or what!!!! Had the audition, it was really funny, as I met the lead guitarist who I'd been speaking to on the phone.... Then the rhythm guitarist comes.... We'd played together very briefly before (he'd come and played with my other band for a few weeks). He said "I thought it might be you Debs, I mean how many Debs are there that are bassists locally" Was fab to see him, and gave him a big hug.... Also knowing him put me at ease instantly! So we played, I rocked it, got on brilliantly with the guys (drummer was away sadly, so we had a drum backing track which wasn't ideal), and basically had the BEST fun I've had as a bassist in AGES! So, end of 2 hours, I'm packing up, they go out to talk, come back in and offer me the gig if I'd like it..... Would I like it? HELL YEAH!! So I leave on a huge high, with a promise of the full set list being emailed to me..... So I've got a lot to work on . Next practice isn't until bank holiday Monday, so I have plenty of time to work on the basslines. So I drive home, make tea, eat tea with hubby, we do the dishes, and then it was back out to my other band practice. I get there (slightly late but I'd text the drummer, and in fairness I set up much quicker than anyone else) and there is an atmosphere.... The cold feet guitarist is there WITHOUT his kit, so I ask him where his stuff was and he said "I'm not playing tonight, I want to get a few things off my chest". So he says his piece, basically the he doesn't think we are ready and then ripped into our lead singer.... She cried! So I ripped into him telling him that it was his attitude that was halting our progress. Lots of things were said, and so I asked him the golden question "Do you want to gig or not" he said "Not a the moment with the way we are playing" I asked everyone else, they wanted to gig..... Now bearing in mind with have 3 guitarists a decision was made..... We sacked the cold feet guitarist there and then... He left! So, we calm down the singer who was threatening to walk, and then in walks 2 members (including the bassist) from the band we are doing the charity gig with. They listened to our set and were critical about the areas we knew (2 songs were are sloppy on the ending) but they were mostly very complimentary! So, it looks like the charity gig IS going ahead but the date has been put back a few weeks (but due t the other band having a clash) I told the band that I have joined another band (in he interest of being open and honest from the outset) but I have said I will stay with them for now.... After investing 8 months with them, I want to see them gig! And I want to gig with them! So, I am now in TWO bands!!! I know where my head and heart is....with the new band..... for starters the material is more challenging which will help my development, and equally the new band has a mean age 20 years younger than my old band, so for longevity it has better prospects! I have said to the old band, that if I find it too much with 2 bands (gig clashes etc) I will stay until they find another bassist, but I'm going to give both a shot! So people, watch this space..... I've got a lot of hard work ahead of me and I can't bloody wait
Good luck today, hope all works out well. Have you told your band you are doing this audition? it may just be the kick up the arse they need.
I've told the drummer. Only an hour until I need to leave...... Eeeeekkkkk!! Fozzer - Thankyou, I know I still have a lot to learn and there are FAR FAR better bassists than me, but I work hard and I want to learn.
-
For me, I'm still very much learning my trade as a bassist, and with an eclectic taste in music I enjoy re-creating tracks I have known and loved and learning songs which have passed me by. I have complete respect for you guys in originals bands, however, at this stage in my life as a bassist the safety of being able to have a song to work from (albeit putting my own stamp on it) gives me the confidence to play that I wouldn't have at this moment in time if I constantly needed to develop my own basslines. Don't get me wrong, I noodle and create my own basslines all the time, but that is in my own home, I wouldn't have the metaphorical balls to play them in front of other people..... Yet!

I've just had another stroppy outburst!! This is soooooo not like me!! Text from drummer saying the guitarist wants a band meeting tomorrow not a practice..... I have responded with "I'm not having a meeting. We've had meetings upon meetings. We are a band, we are meant to play music. If its not a rehearsal tomorrow I'm not coming" I have my audition a few hours before my practice (I've got a day off tomorrow, and other band members from new band are on morning shift), pray it goes well for me for my sanity! Kev, you are right.... The guitarist is looking for excuses now and I'm not having it!!! I feel bad as I recruited the new singer, and also I have one sixth shares in our PA.... But I'm happy to write that off now, it was only a cheap 2nd hand PA and the singer she's a good girl, I'm sure she will understand.... You live and learn!
OK, yes, it's true. I just didn't want to argue about it. OK then, to be quite clear: IF YOU CAN'T PLAY BY EAR, THEN YOU'RE A POOR EXCUSE FOR A BASS-PLAYER!! There, I've said it. Now I'm going to spend the rest of the day in the shed. *spends rest of day in shed*
+1 and joins Discreet in the shed.... move over matey, I've brought my own camping chair and some tunes we can transcribe by ear -
Or just salty bananas! Now there's a good name for a band....
The band I'm auditioning for tomorrow haven't sorted a name yet.... I may suggest it

well, what a difference a few days can make I sent the band the set order on Thursday..... Friday was bliss as I got comments back that people were happy with the order. Then Saturday it all went t*ts up Guitarist with cold feet..... "We aren't ready"...... "I'm not happy with some of our starts"...... "we need longer before we gig"..... "Our singer needs to be more commanding as a front person"...... Drummer then starts saying "Well he may have a point" I get very very angry and throw my toys out of the pram!!!!!!! We are looking at a 13 song set for a charity event (after we cancelled for the SAME charity last year) in 4 weeks time, we still have 4 practices to go. I have been in the band for 8 months now, I joined after the last bassist got fed up and left because they hadn't started gigging, he also stuck it for 8 months! So (albeit wih a change of singer) the band have been together for 16 months and have NEVER gigged..... OK there were 3 months taken off when the lead guitarist had cancer but still. I have told them that if the 13th April charity gig doesn't go ahead I'm out. However, I have an audition for another band tomorrow. This band seem really keen to get out there. If it goes well and I like them and they like me, I will be telling the other band that I will stay the 4 weeks until the gig (if it does go ahead..... although I very much suspect that it won't) and then I'm leaving. I am, however, going to find another band..... my current band are definitely halting my progress as a bassist and enough is enough. My poor bass teacher (sorry Mr Ace ) had it both barrels yesterday as I went off on one in my lesson
Nig you don't look your age! Ay, I'm envious, but you have obviously worked at getting into those bands, so all credit to you.
I was going to say this!!! Nige, you do not look anywhere near 50 from what you've posted up of your gigs with Kit.... blimey, I thought you were about my age. Maybe this is conclusive proof that healthy living, the love of a good partner and regular gigging with bands you love are the secret to staying youthful..... I have 2 of the 3..... I live in hope to start turning the clock back on my appearance

And in my opinion, the ability to work out a song by ear, and the ability to fit into a band go hand in hand. -
I have suffered with cramp a fair bit (not whilst playing) and I was told to have something salty and to eat bananas, so I concur with what's been said.
