1.
Aw, dont give MrF a hard time guys. Its a bit bewildering being in a band for the first time, as I am finding out!!
+1 to this. Changing keys is a great way to improve your skills, so see it as a blessing in disguise I remember one of my first band rehearsals.... I'd been given the setlist.... Keys as original unless specified.... Got to one song that had been changed from F to G.... Hadn't been told... Started playing in F, thought "hang on a minute", realised it was in G and spent the rest of the song stumbling through transposing on the hoof All good fun Just relax, enjoy and take it as it comes
2. I'm away this weekend, but would love to hear about your future ones
3. Nick - Are you going to see when the hall is free on a Sat in Feb? The sooner people know, the sooner they can plan I suppose
4. It's been bloody awesome I have adjusted my first ever truss rod on my new 5 string.... And have mastered Another Brick in the Wall, playing it on my 5 string so I can get the low D without drop tuning I am a very happy camper. Also hubby has agreed that all 3 of my basses (well technically I have 4) can be out on stands in the living room, which makes it quicker to grab my trusty Ibanez 4 string, my fretless or my new Ibanez 5 string depending on what I want to play
5. Blinking heck people!!!!!!! HOW MANY BASSES!!!!!!! Here is my modest addition: Madisson cheaply beginner bass (going to sell with the practice amp it came with) Ibanez 304 with a Maple neck Fender style fretless P bass Ibanez 305 - my first dance with a 5 string However, I have only been a bassist for 6 months.... So not bad for a start I reckon
6.
Great to hear you guys had a lot of fun and you're already planning the next meetup! Post photos if you have any! Deb - Re. acoustic basses: you may also have realised that, besides being huge per se, they are somewhat incompatible with having breasts - no matter how small - and that they are therefore best played while standing. In that case, you don't need long arms, your usual ones will suffice I haven't been able to find a way to play my acoustic while sitting. Not that it matters, though, since the bass is so light.
That was probably my problem then.... Boobs and gut getting in the way Gary - Bring it to the next one with a strap and I'll have another go
7. Tough call that only you can make.... But sounds embarrassing for you, so words should certainly be had!
8. I have always enjoyed listening to the Beatles... However, since taking up the bass I have found I appreciate them on a whole new level Our band has a new singer, and the first song she wanted to introduce was Dear Prudence.... Never heard it before, but what a gorgeous bassline . Great song to play too. Although with many tracks how on earth Sir Paul has managed to play that bassline and sung at the same time has left me in complete awe! His voice may be past it now, but Blimey Charlie what a musician!
9. I agree, let's get the date in the diary Feb sounds fab Gary (LC) - I loved your acoustic bass.... But Blimey the body was huge! made me realise unless my arms grow about 6 inches then I stand no chance of properly playing one
10.
Show us some pics!:-)
Was too busy playing basses and chatting to take pictures Think Chaypup may have taken some.
11. Cardiff Bass Bash.... So got to play lots of different basses and meet some really cool people
12. Thanks for sorting it out Gelfin. Perfect venue Great to meet you all and try out different kit. Had a fab time, and look forward to the next one
13. I don't know what kit to bring with me tomorrow. If anyone would like to try anything let me know, although I haven't got any flash kit I could bring: Ibanez 4 string (304) Ibanez 5 string (305) Fender style fretless with flats Peavy combo amp Laney 300w amp Laney 115 cab Laney 210 cab Mr Fretbuzz I think you wanted to try flats, so I can bring my fretless with me if you want. I also have a Maddison beginner bass which sounds pretty decent actually! And a little practice amp. These are I am selling too for £80 (too embarrassed to put it in the proper sale section, as I'd get laughed out I'm sure!) but if anyone is interested in a little buy for someone they know this is an ideal little starter package!! So I could bring it along if anyone was interested.
14. Can't wait for tomorrow
15. I would start with some 12 bar blues maybe? Have you thought about getting some lessons to start you on your path?
16. Bought his 5 string Ibanez.... Great communication, top bloke. Would recommend. Thanks Leon.
17. Great guy to do business with, you can buy with confidence
18.
PS I would like to have a go at some flat wounds...don't know how they feel or sound...... Want to see and hear the Rickenbacker too :-)
I have flats on my fretless
19. Dunno what I'll be bringing yet kit wise... Probably my Ibanez, my fretless and my 5 string Ibanez if all goes to plan with my collection on Thursday night! Although my not bring all three. As for amp.... I may either bring my peavy combo I use at home or my Laney amp and one of my cabs (probably my 1 15 rather than my 2 10). In fairness, I haven't got the best kit in the world, but happy to bring stuff along.... Can't bring my drummer though! LOL! I am sooooo looking forward to this
20. On saturday I could not play for toffee... everything I tried I messed up on... even OH remarked that I was having an off day... it was soul destroying. Yesterday however, was a new day and I was happy with my playing and I sounded slicker. have no clue why it would be, it was just one of those things, and very very strange!!
21. We've struggled too after some departures... I think we are back on track now, but yep, it does seem an issue.
22. So sorry
23. Well done for leaving the dark side Good luck with learning the songs
24.
ahem
Yeah, but when you can slap bass like he does, who cares what you look like!
25.
Plus I have a beard. Beards are good.
This must be where I am going wrong then Whenever I walk into new music shops.... It is always assumed I am buying something for my husband or son! Don't even have a son Cue much shock when I pick up a bass and start playing it! So I guess I definitely don't look like a bassist! That said, maybe its because I haven't been playing long enough to have developed that whimsical groove look whilst standing inconspicuously at the back! I do try my best in my band though
