What is your favourite song to play live?
SpaceChick replied to garymilitia's topic in General Discussion
Only in a rehearsal stage rather than a live performance stage at the moment, but am loving playing "Need your love so bad" and "Another brick in the wall - part two" with the band -
Well, had my second rehearsal with the band today. Had so much fun again They threw a few more songs at me that weren't on the set list again, but I managed to fudge a bassline together!! Enjoyed playing some songs aswell that I had plotted some interesting basslines to. They have also "trusted" me with the 3 original tracks they do too We need to get in the studio to record them soon, as we want to have CDs for sale at our charity gig. The one early frustration I have is the finishing of the songs, they need a tight finish and they haven't got one for most yet. Also, my hugest thanks and gratitude goes to Discreet who recommended musician earplugs. I have managed to hear what I was playing, hear the band, but I have come home with no tinnitus this week I am definitely going to have to upgrade my amp though!!!! I'm going to have to save hard!!!

Anyone ever had a bad car crash with a load of gear in the back ?
SpaceChick replied to far0n's topic in General Discussion
I nearly had an accident when I needed to slam on the brakes on the way to my bass lesson tonight.... I was all bass ok, check; eggs for bass teacher ok, check. Phew! Am thinking about getting a hard case rather than a soft one now though! -
A funny thing happened on the way from my bass lesson
No, the madness begins when you go out to buy a coffee and come back with a bass instead of satisfying your caffeine craving.
or going to see another basschatters gig and coming home with his fretless -
I love this Nature or Nurture debate. My parents had no musical talent, but did have a love of music and always encouraged me and my sister to do what made us happy. I loved playing music (starting with the recorder aged 5, leading to classical guitar, oboe, violin, keyboards and in later life the bass), my sister had a love of literature. My Mum was a very talented artist, my Dad a talented sportsman.... Neither me nor my sister can draw or play sports!! My grandfather, however, was a very talented singer and did loads of pub gigs as a soloist (I'd like to think he'd be proud of me for being in a band now) I think it is about being supportive and allow development rather than genetics personally.

Yey I adore my Ibanez (although model isn't as posh as yours ) -
I'm still a bass playing newbie.... But have just woken up as I had a great idea for a bassline for a song my band are doing in my dream... Got up to plot it, thought I'd check out Basschat, now back to sleep for me. I LOVE it LOVE it LOVE it
Wouldn't say one's easier than the other, playing bass well is kinda like cooking a good steak. On the face of it (to non-musicians and guitards) it's a piece of piss, but its surprising how difficult it is to do the simple things well.
I LOVE this analogy as its soooooo true I played guitar as a youngster, but as an adult it was bass that appealed to me.... Rhythm and melody in one

I had a try out last Tuesday and was really nervous too, so I know where you are coming from A very wise BCer (you know who you are) is like a mentor to me, and he said to remember that you are judging them as much as they are judging you... So make sure they are right for you as much as you are right for them.

Great stories you guys I'm sure your friends are looking down happy that you are enjoying their legacies

Your methods for learning new songs (covers)
SpaceChick replied to Cameronj279's topic in General Discussion
I'll find out what key we're doing it in - it's probably not the recorded key - then listen to it a few times until I know the song and the line.
Yep, I forgot this bit.... Check the key, change key on track using audacity, realise it sounds like pinky and perky.... Email singer to say "are you sure you sing this in g when the original is in c".... Find out the actual key, then follow my steps above -
Your methods for learning new songs (covers)
SpaceChick replied to Cameronj279's topic in General Discussion
Very timely as I've taken a half day from work today to plot some basslines for my new band! The last few days, I have been listening to the tracks at every opportunity. I tried to find tab first, give me a basic structure, then I'd realise the flaws in the tab and then make my amendments by ear. I then jot my tab down and play the track over and over again with the single as the backing track. -
Ashdown MAG 300 combo or MAG 600 and a 2x10 cab?
SpaceChick replied to Mr Fretbuzz's topic in General Discussion
I will be watching this thread with interest..... I'm needing to start my gigging career with my Peavy 112, but I know I will need to upgrade. I was thinking I'd rather go for a punchy loud combo, but will be very interested to hear views. -
Ahhhhh, I hear you, but this is such a good opportunity to really develop. I got in a band on Tuesday, and Weds and Thurs nights for me were as much about transposing basslines into different keys (lead singer wanting to sing in a different key) as they were about playing. I'm also waiting for a rough recording of an original track that I need to write a bassline for. embrace the challenge I say
Yes, but I read the thread title, and immediately thought; "And I feel Heavy Metal" "Woohoo" "And I've pins and I've needles..." (Song 2 by Blur for the uninitiated)
+1 Great news on the strings though

I've got a £200 amp.... Now this I need to upgrade! But I need to have a better understanding on what I need first!

Not gigged yet, but when I do it will be with my Ibanez which is £300 worth

If it does indeed prove to be right, I am going to print and laminate it!! The lead singer of my new band likes to change the keys of songs, so this could be a life saver (I had a HUGE learning curve last night!) Thanks Fumps - you are one top dude! -
That's fantastic news! And it sounds as though your band are actually good. Whereas mine... well, best not say too much on an open forum
well they were good until they got their new bassist In all honesty, I feel lucky to have found them and that they are happy for me to join the party! i just hope I can do them and myself proud
Just don't be tempted to take some of your chickens along to the gig, you know what happened to Alice Cooper...
LOL!!!!!!!!!!
What is it with all these chick bass players muscling in on the bass action no only joshing , well done and have fun that's the main thing ! I have to pinch myself sometimes as can't believe how lucky I am to have found a local band and am out gigging again
LOL! Yep, us chick bassists are taking over the world I've got a huge grin on my face today (to accompany my tintinus! Thanks to Discreet for the ear plug recommendation - ordered online for next week!). I continue to be apprehensive as their last bassist was a retired pro with 40 years experience, so I am NEVER going to match up. However, I am going to work my socks off and be the best I can be. I just hope and pray that he won't want the gig back, as its my band now! I love it, love it, love it! The drummer is awesome and we really had a groove going. The guitarist was really supportive on giving me chords on songs I didn't know so I could jam a bassline and the singer is just a really top friendly guy and has a great voice. Can you tell how excited I am, I doubt the NHS will get my best work today as I'm walking on air in a haze of euphoria! Who needs drugs hey!
