1.
Put an even layer of talcum powder onto the snare drum.
Works better with double cream. Apparently. So I'm led to believe.
2. Although it'll get slated, I'll vote first for the BDI21. Had mine a couple of years now, use it every day, no issues. The SVT tone is killer!
3. Thanks dood! (Feeling very sheepish though, as I should have thought to check that first.)
4. What should the gain control on an amp be set at?
5. I don't particularly want to read about bass guitars in Sound On Sound, and neither do I really want to learn how to set up a studio from BGM. BUT.... I think there is a small crossover (sic). There used to be some really interesting articles by Petra Jones about recording and mixing bass; more of that sort of stuff would be great. Agree with the comments about mid-range basses. The high-end p0rn is lovely, but "most" of us live in the real world. So, review the basses and gear which "most" of us are "most" likely to buy. And what about reviews of 2nd hand gear? There's a healthy used market out there - why not look at instruments & equipment which is (say) up to 5 years old? eg. What does it do? How useful is it? How has it held up over time? How does it compare to modern (digital?) equivalents? etc. As another approach, I'd suggest the good people at Oyster House look at what's going on over at Emap. An example would be Bike magazine. It covers current machines (new instruments) in all price bands, great roads (gigs, venues, experiences), better riding (theory & technique), etc. And they also select READERS to review BIKES. Think about it..... I like BGM. I have it on subscription, just renewed. But it can and should improve.
6. I have a Shine 4-string electro-acoustic, and love it. Very easy to play, great as an instrument to just pick up and noodle, well constructed and well finished. Loud enough on its own for general noodlage, but needs slight amping to compete with a decent acoustic guitar. Plugged in it's awesome and has a range of very usable tones thanks to the built in 3-band EQ and "presence" control. I believe it was very favourably reviewed in BGM a while back.
7. Not a problem, just a question out of interest.... I've had my Cort Artisan B5 for about a year. I play on average an hour a night, every night. Sometimes more, sometimes less, and usually more at weekends - maybe a couple of hours a day. Everything's working as it should, and I haven't had to replace the battery. Is this normal?
8. Every piece of equipment should have a rating plate. That's a little sticker somewhere which displays a fair amount of information, among which is the maximum power comsumption for that unit. Add 'em all up*, and from there it's fairly straightforward to calculate your total power usage. * Be sure to add up in the same units, ie. convert W to kW or you'll end up with some awfully big numbers!
9. Absolutely awesome! Well done!
10. Just been to see V8 at the Heathcote Inn in Whitnash, Leamington Spa. They were rather good! Singer/frontman chappy reminds me of Buster Bloodvessel. Good rock covers 4-piece outfit. Lead guitarist was outstanding and looked about 12. Bassist was using a Fender Precision into an SVT-2 Pro, Classic 4x10 and 1x15 and a Fender combo thingy. Thought his sound could've been a tad higher in the mix, and was a touch too "throaty" for my preference. Needed a wee bit more low end. Good mix of music from Metallica, classic Purple, Judas Priest, Velvet Revolver, AC/DC, etc. and good humourous interaction with the punters. Would definitely go see them again. As an aside, the Heathcote are now hosting bands on a Saturday night. Contact details HERE.

12. £17,000. Yes, I know, you can buy a Cort Artisan B5 for a tad less than that.... But that's what it'll cost if you want mine.
13. OMG! The stuff you guys do for "fun" is the top end of "challenging" for me.... And I've been playing for 30 years!!!
14. Oooh, these soundcraft links are the poodle's plums! Exactly what I needed - thank you!
15.
This explains -wiring
That makes sense! Thank-you!
16. So, XLR connectors then. Are they designed to work as a "stereo" connection (left/right/ground), or should one XLR connector only carry one channel. And what's the difference between balanced and unbalanced and in what applications should they be used? I'm not very bright.
17. I'm quite interested in finding out more about this. PM sent.
18. Coolio! Thanks for all the advice everyone.... I'm off to re-do some plumbing....
19.
You've got 1 and 6 in the right places...
LMAO! Yeah, they're the two I was fairly confident on! So, at the moment we're looking at: Bass -> Tuner -> FX -> DI -> Mixer -> Combo Mike257: No line out on the FX, just phones and left(mono)/right. There's no line in on the combo - it's a MarkBass CMD103H and actually fairly limited in terms of connections. Dunno if the effects loop is line level, but I could give it a shot so long as nothing's likely to detonate.
20. What would be the correct sequence to connect the following components? This is my current signal path but I'm not convinced it's the best way to do it: 1. Instrument 2. Multi-effects unit (input, stereo output, phones output) 3. DI box 4. Mixer (connected to drum machine and MP3 player) 5. Tuner 6. Combo (effects loop, tuner out, no headphone socket) ...bearing in mind that I mostly play through headphones using the headphone socket on the mixer, and only occasionally use the combo. Many thanks!
21. Get a pair of these or similar: Work perfectly for me for several years. And if they wear out? At £8 or thereabouts they ain't gonna break the bank!
22. Hot Tub

Logarhythm

Just kick the drummer. I've heard that works.
23. PM'd
24. I play three basses, all active, and I've had no problems with my BDI21. I also have a Behringer rack tuner and headphones and have not had any issue with them either. Quite possibly you just got a duff unit.
25. I'm looking for sommat cheap & cheerful, for general home faffery. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
