Personally I'm amazed at the amount of slap hate shown here....
I'm not amazed, but I do find it rather ironic. I went to a BassBash last year (Nottingham, I think?), and a damn fine day out it was too! I had a brilliant time! But pretty much all I heard was slappin' & poppin'. There's two ways of looking at this: 1. Everyone who was trying out gear was slapping, or 2. Only those who can slap were trying out gear. I suspect I'm not alone when I say that although I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it all, and chatting with new folks and admiring and talking about all the amazing instruments and gear on show, there's no way I was gonna pick up a bass and have a quick noodle in that company!

tbh, I sorta see slapping & popping on bass as pretty much equivalent to bikers doing wheelies. I can't do it, but I'm slightly envious of those who can. I'd like to be able to do it, and although there's no place for it in the music I enjoy listening to and/or playing, I imagine it could be quite refreshing to change to a completely different technique when noodling. I also get a sense of percieved inadequacy. By that I mean that those of us who can't do it are somehow percieved as in some way inadequate by those who can. When I go into a music store and hear someone slap & pop on a bass, I'll leave. It's intimidating and I know I can't compete. But it does sound good and as I said, I'd like to be able to do it. Just for fun.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to playing and practice ?
Hot Tub replied to Prosebass's topic in General Discussion
I try to get between one and two hours every day, probably averages out to 12/15 hours a week. That's only noodling and/or playing along with tracks on my mp3 player (that's all I do). Seems to be that I'll make sudden, significant progress, then plateau for a while when nothing seems to be improving, then all of a sudden there'll be another step up, then plateau again.... Having said that, I always try to play something better today than I did yesterday, or learn a little nuance today which I didn't know/wasn't aware of yesterday.* Every day's a school day! * Doesn't always work that way, but hey, I try! -
Just mastered "Safety Dance". It's a silly little song, but everyone likes it and it makes Hot Tub happy. Tomorrow night's project is Status Quo's "Burning Bridges". Working on a wee bassline for Rufus Wainwright's piano/vocal version of "Hallelujah". Ralph McTell's "Streets Of London" is causing me some problems at the moment (along the lines of: Bass guitar--->bedroom window--->pavement  ). And don't get me started on the Blackmore's Night version of "Greensleeves"! Note to self: Must do "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Warrant. Mrs HT loves it.

Didn't see the bass for sale <sob> *considers jumping from window in despair, but probably not high enough* Don't think it was the Magic tour - earlier I guess. Mr Universe was the new album which they were promoting (McCoy playing basss on Vengeance just absolutely killed me!) Aksherly, much as I don't do the star/celeb thang, JMcC is someone I'd really like to have a pint with.

This came about during a casual conversation with the new manager of my local. He mentioned that he's looking for bands and asked if I knew anyone. I said I'd post on here and take no responsibility for the consequences! So, here's how it looks: No residency as such at the moment, but possibly lead to regular work; Genre is classic rock/blues (think Deep Purple MkII, Pink Floyd, Quo, ACDC, Led Zep, Skynyrd, etc.), plus original stuff in the same vein; Location is close to Leamington Spa. I'm gonna have a chat/get p!ssed with the boss later today, so pop me a PM if you're interested and I'll get back to you probably tomorrow. (PS - I get nothing out of this. I'll just put people in touch with each other then it's up to you guys.)

The first gig I went to was Gillan at the Glasgow Apollo. The bassist was John McCoy. I remember looking up at this guy on stage; he looked about ten feet tall and ten feet wide (he's still a big bloke!). And the sound of his bass was utterly thunderous. It totally captivated me, blew my mind, shook my soul, however you want to describe it. I remember thinking, "I have no idea who you are, I have no idea what you're doing, but I'm going to learn to do that." Two weeks later I use part of (most of!) my college grant to buy my first bass guitar (a 2nd hand short scale tobacco sunburst thingy  ). I borrowed someone else's homemade cabinet, and I modified an old hifi stereo amplifier, and started learning. Nearly thirty years later I'm not much better  and still learning every day, and still hopelessly in love with the sound and the feel and the "aura" of the bass guitar.

Good bits Can learn by ear fairly easily Once learned, can commit tunes to memory very quickly Pleased with my current (and slowly increasing) "repertoire" of nearly 200 songs No problem with odd meters Got really good rythmn Good clean fretting/positioning technique Don't use effects - prefer "clean" sound and to use the eq available on the instrument and amp Bad bits Limited theory Can only read very basic notation Can use tab, but not too hot Can't do slap Don't understand jazz, and don't particularly want to Over critical - nothing I play is good enough No confidence - never had the b@lls to play in front of anyone except Mrs Hot Tub I'll probably come back and edit this as I think of more points.

Best Bass Players of New Romantic Era
Hot Tub replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
John Taylor. No debate. Bowie wasn't New Romantic. Bowie was "Bowie" - separate and distinct from all genres. IMHO. -
Anything by U2. Generally good and interesting bass playing, mired in pretentious sh!t.
Now try House of Fun - one of the bonkersest pop basslines ever.
He-he-he... next on my list! Great minds, eh?

Well, that's a rather fun little ditty to play! (Just wanted to share that, 'cause I'm really chuffed at being able to play it! ) As you were.

I have a little MP3 player which I use for learning basslines, and I've been using it for a while with no problems whatsoever. Last night I added a couple of tracks to the playlist I use in Windows Media, then dragged the playlist in its entirety into the "Sync" panel. This is my usual procedure, and normally it'll run through the playlist and bring up "already on device" in the "Status" column and sync the new track(s). But this time it generated errors on every track and the MP3 player showed "Unknown Format" on its display. I've tried formatting the MP3 player and reinstalling it, but still getting the same problem. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this? Many thanks in advance!

If you haven't already, go and have a play on a 5er. Personally, it took me a little time to get used to the narrower string spacing and the different feel of the neck, but now it's my instrument of choice. Just that one additional string opens up a whole new range of tonal and position possibilities. My playing has certainly improved too, which is an unexpected bonus! Like I said, try before you buy. As a matter of interest, where are you? I'm sure I'm not the only Baschatter who would offer you the chance to have a go, if you're close by? (Note: That last sentence was worded verrrrrry carefully, but still doesn't sound quite right! )
