2.
The gauge of most low B strings in bass sets means that generally they will be under a lot less tension, there is a big difference between actual and perceived tension so this isn't a problem. I believe a change of strings should resolve the issue and that a non-tapered .130 ought to suffice.
+1 for most 5 string sets I've tried. IME "45" sets (specifically 45,65,85,105 IIRC) with 125 B strings have felt too slack, whilst a 135 or 130 B has been better matched to the EADG strings. For "40" sets (around 40,60,80,100) - a 130 or 125 B is usually OK. Having tried mixing and matching some low B's of the same string brand & model I found the 135 B a little stiff with light gauge strings. They were on a 34" scale instrument with medium to low action for what that's worth. As with so much with basses - the devil is in the details. Not all strings are made equal! String core & wrap material and construction are hugely important to bass strings feel and sound. Low B strings seem harder to make well than most others. From what I've seen they tend to be made of more layers and have thicker wrap wire/ribbon.
3. Check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MjL76WzMVQ Seems cool enough. Would make fretwork and setup more difficult however!
4. There are a lot of thought provoking and shocking lyrics out there. Part and parcel of (relatively) free expression that's been available to most musicians in the recent past. The one that caught me off guard recently was the super furry animals song "Hello Sunshine": You're not so innocent You're a disgrace to your country If you fled a million miles I'd chase you for a day (If I could be bothered) The way it's sung is what caught me. See if you can spot what I spotted: http://youtu.be/XHlUcYYifO0?t=110
5. Quite "cheesy halloween decoration" like - quite good for the season to come. As for a permanent hanger - I'd get sick of looking at it after 15 minutes!
6. That bass looks pretty . . . sharp. I like it. Not practical - but definitely metal!
7. Got 820 (roughly) the first attempt - then I started to try to figure it out and now I'm averaging closer to 790/800. Could mean I need more time with a metronome - or that the mouse clicking is not working for me. Can't press it consistently.
8. Quick note - not sure how many MIM P's that have it (if any) but the neck pocket can have 3 shapes on 4 string fenders (that I know of). Regular: 1951 style (squared heel): Ergonomic bolt pattern: See here for more info: http://www.warmoth.c...NeckPocket.aspx EDIT: the regular style is by far the most common, however the other two have appeared on basses with "Fender Precision" on it so I thought it could be worth noting.
9. Well that's new (to me at least!). I've heard of fender BBOT and similar bridge designs having saddle height problems - often the saddle screws can slip if they aren't fitted exactly - or have wax or something in the threads - but I've never heard them rattle. Were both screws on each saddle solidly contacting the plate?
10. I would say any maintenance or modifications will slightly effect the price of an amp. Still worth a lot more than an amp that doesn't work! An amp that's never been used in anger & stored perfectly (ideally in it's original box with all the bits & pieces) will probably be worth the most. Once it's past warranty it's just a case of getting it repaired / maintained / modified (e.g. mains voltage mod) safely and correctly. It may help sell it if you can say you've had it checked by a professional amp repairman.
11. Spalted maple? Maybe . . . Looks a fair bit like this wood: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/spector-u.s.a.-ns-4h2-ex-spalted-maple-top-bass-guitar
12.
...the results of the shameless theft of half a dozen or so ideas I've seen elsewhere!
Just like almost everybody else, since the 60's anyway. You have a rather elegant design, at least to the eyes . . . Once the bubinga gets finished I'd say it'll look even sweeter. The proof however, will be in the playing!. Not finishing the neck profile till you have it strung up is clever. Should help decide on a profile that suits you.
13.
I am thinking of a new career where I will stand on a stage playing recordings of DJ's playing other people's recordings. I will call myself a DJJ... ;-)
Now this I like - A performance of recordings of people "performing" by standing behind a computer. Wait . . . that sounds like 2/3 or more of what DJ's do!
14.
. . . It did sound fairly resonant . . .

. . . nothing wrong with laminated wood for tone . . .
Wether wood makes a difference to tone (as far as wood species is concerned) is open to interpretation. What is for certain is You can get decent laminate acoustic instruments (up to and including contrabasses) so I can't see it being a problem on electric ones. I agree with you, Andy1515, that laminates tend to be heavier (with all that stabilizing glue) - but with careful design it can be overcame. Like carbon graphite instruments - the laminate can be a skin and the inside can be filled with something stiff but very light. I think the Danelectro Longhorn is built using a similar concept - but I could be wrong. EDIT: More on topic, black and gold can look great IMO:
15.
Fender PJ Mex (which I use). Very versatile.
Active? I know passive PJ basses can be versatile - but compared to the same bass with a good 2 or 3 band pre - it's far less flexible! Of course if you like the passive option - something like the East J retro deluxe: http://www.east-uk.c...-01-deluxe.html Which has two important (for me) features: Passive option with a "normal" tone pot that works in active & passive modes. I had a G&L L2500 - the tribute version - a really flexible and awesome instrument. Loved the string spacing too - at the bridge and nut. Couldn't get on with the neck however - Too much wood for me! Awesome Pre however - Bass & Treble cut in active or passive modes. I'm planning a project where I might try a J retro deluxe - but If I could get a L2500 pre I'd be pretty interested to try it out! EDIT: G&L may be selling them: http://g-l-online-store.myshopify.com/collections/electronics/products/electronics-preamp-active-bass Sweet!
16. Given how many different sounds you can get out of a Stingray - I imagine a Jazz bass can sound like quite a few of them - But only with some help. Some careful EQ work can get it fairly close to a Stingray sound - but I can't imagine many on board EQ's would do the best job - Not with fixed frequencies, you'd have a far better chance with a more flexible EQ (like a parametric high - mid & low EQ - or a high resolution graphic EQ (say 25 bands or more?)). The pickup(s) - even though both a H Stingray and a Jazz have two single coils - they are wired & positioned differently - so putting a Jazz pickup or pickups through a Stingray preamp won't give you instant Stingray sounds (I assume - I've yet to try it!).
17. I wouldn't worry about laminated wood - it's in good company: http://www.kubicki.com/about.php (The above is on a martin acoustic: http://unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=20216.0 ) And most importantly: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/240945-de-afwerking-mk4-4-blablas-has-that-building-itch-again/ My objection to laminated wood is the look and weight tends to be a little busy for me.
18. Nice work, I'd say the more usable tapers will make it a lot more fun to dial in the various tones the bass is capable of.
19.
"I want one of these..." Me too! Here's another interesting variation of a sliding pickup bass - http://www.spaltinst...ruments/vviper/
Interesting is right! Cool idea - a swipeable pickup . . .
20. I want one of these: https://www.youtube....h?v=MS02YaLw1uM http://www.warwick.d...--Pictures.html A little outside my budget ATM however... Edit - I can't find an exact € - but It seems the Star basses from the custom shop are all €6,000 or more. Guess I have to get saving.
21. Those do get quite a bit of positive feedback - and can sound huge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiqMsdizcxU
22. I'd recommend looking at pickup and string experiments - if you want something new - but only after replacing or repairing the [s]instrument[/s] parts that are dodgy, and getting it nice and clean and properly set up (by yourself or someone else, as long as it plays great).
23.
. . . Wonder how it would look with a slightly smaller headstock...looks a bit out of scale with the body.
+1 it looks good - but with a Bass VI style headstock I think it'd be even nicer: Like this one (but matched to the body paint of course): http://shop.guitarpoint.de/de/Fender/1963-Fender-Bass-VI-Olympic-White
24. Well done. It is great to have a creative output! Rock on!
25.
Nice work. Warwick should do more solid colour finishes. That looks much nicer than the usual coffee tables
It certainly has a more "NS design" spector look to it . . .
