1. Awesome stuff. I had a righthanded, red PJ version of that bass for my first bass. Still have it and it rocks. Hate the tuners - they are the older, weaker, enclosed style, not the open back like those above. Hope it all goes well!
 2.
Anyone fancy a bit of Rural Groove?
Haaa!!!! Saw one of these: http://www.bassdirec...cian_MC924.html On Bassdirect - then I saw it in the wurzels - Ooo Arr! The White Musican bass is now sold!
 3.
You can't keep a good man down.
Here here. Perseverance is present.
 4.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I ordered one with Blocks and Bindings from Custom World in the end. The original neck decided to turn into a banana when I changed the strings from 100-45 to 105-45. No amount of coaxing would get it back into shape. The truss rod was exceedingly stiff and just sprang the neck back out of shape when left overnight.
Did you try resetting it (Backing off the truss rod tension, holding it with a slight backbow with a clamp, then snugging the truss rod nut up to the tension point). After a few days it can "remember" the new starting point. I've seen this chap do it. (He's Canadian, and seems to know quite a bit about making necks go again!). 5.
I spend a lot of time looking at gear online...basses/amps etc. but nothing really excites me at the moment. I suppose to a degree I'm pretty content; I'd like a lightweight amp, but that's pretty much it.
It's not just you (judging by the responses) but I'm all kinds of GASing over a shortscale hofner club style, as well as a synth bass pedal.
 6.
Not bad advice though
Nope, not bad at all. What he was saying for 80% or more of the vid was "How to not suck as a musician" - and saying rehearsal is for learning songs . . . rehearsal is for making sure the songs you learn from practice actually work in the context you'll be performing them. You'll be rehearsing a lot more if that's when you first see the material!
 7. Tell them it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If you want you can make them an offer. £900 is a big claim - needs big evidence, e.g. evidence of plenty of comparable sales on or about that price. Without evidence to that effect . . . £100? £200???
 8.
I learned a HUGE amount about setups from a youtube channel called 'Dave's world of fun stuff', he's a bassist who films his entertaining guitar & bass setups, but be warned, Dave is strangely addictive & you may well find new sayings entering your vocabulary such as "GOOCHED!!!" & "son of a seacook". He's on Facebook too. Enjoy!
+1 for Dave and his practical approach to guitar setup & repair. He's funny and answers questions occasionally. Check his vids out here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOXNPo7CtnzzZ9A4GyQ6Tog
 9. OK got basic level. Apart from some of the more subtle notches It's very obvious to my ears. I may proceed at a better time! EDIT: Bronze is easier than basic!
 10. Properly adjustable neck on an ABG? 24 frets? Exceptionally cool!
 11. GLWTS!
 12. AFAIK most fender bodies were poly / or acrylic painted underneath the nitro to save costs on drying time and spoiled finishes. Some of the 50's guitars may not have the tougher under-layer. FWIW the only definite advantage of nitro is that it can age beautifully (crazing and the like) whereas a good plastic coat will just very slowly change colour. I know nitro has all sorts of special storage and cleaning do's and dont's.
 13. +1 to learning some DIY setup techniques. It helps conserve funds - and crucially - helps diagnose when something more tricky crops up (truss rod issues, fret problems, neck angle issues etc.). No shame in seeking a second opinion. Just take it with a pinch of salt, as not all setter-uppers/techs/luthiers are equal!
 14. Audio Technica ATH-M50 Best headphones I've heard by quite a distance - But I'm only comparing them to a small sample of relatively budget headphones. Worth a listen for anybody thinking of spending about or over €100.
 15. Cool bass - never seen a control setup quite like that, should be interesting. Also I'm not sure the young fella has the reach for a long scale bass.
 16.
My 3 eq ones with a side jack dont fit on a stand without hitting the bass knob, for that reason alone the 2 eq wins
I'm sure there's a way to get a 3eq preamp with stacked knobs into an unmodded 2eq control plate? Maybe not the stock pre - if that's what you need . That or have no volume knob. I've always wondered why I have a volume knob on basses with a blend knob. I only seem to use volume on VVT/VVTT type setups.
 17.
Early Terry Pratchet stuff. The colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic etc.
+1 Mort is a great one, as is any of the night watch series. Actually I might read Mort again (happen to have a paperback to hand!).
 18.
Sounds ok then - must be a fault on the stock pickups as mine was perfectly behaved with stock pups. Could be your house wiring making if worse
Aye - it might have been a little from column A and a little from column B. First time with single coils so I was really noticing the noise ( I've played PJ's before but the J was always backed off).
 19.
Thanks very much for that. One of the crucial measurements when the straps are made for each client, is the distance from the strap button to the top of the shoulder. This will ensure your strap fits properly. Karl
Great stuff. I'll have a play with the length adjustments (those clasps are heavy duty). When I put it to max length, while way lower than I'd typically hang the bass - the wide part of the strap was over my shoulder - and that is both comfy (like my foam and elastic strap) and fairly solid (unlike the spongey elasticated strap). EDIT: OK it's on it's way back to the UK.
 20. OK happy campers! Here's my first impressions: Very nice piece of leather! Still has that quality saddle scent. The leather is pliable and has a very slight give that fits to the body beautifully. The suede backing is perfect! I like the softness and grippyness. Superb stitching/fitting etc. as good as I have seen. The strap doesn't really fit me - or at least the way I like to wear a bass. Like the other testers it seems a tad wide for me at the back - and for how I like to hold the neck (up to 45 degrees!) it gets wide too late from the front button hole for me. Specifically it reaches it's full width 30 - 40 cm from the front strap hole, I'd really opt for about 20 -30 cm or thereabouts for optimum comfort. This is probably due to my pretty modest upper body size. All in all I am pleasantly impressed. I'll wear it some more, and try to get it posted on before close of business today! Will also do a more careful assessment of it's fit.
 21. Get some water, a nail brush or old toothbrush, and start scrubbing! I've used a tiny amount of soap with no issues. I usually use 120 grit sandpaper to de-corrode the frets then work up to 1000/2000 grit as a polish. one of the above helps! I finish with a rubbing of linseed oil. Makes the wood look nice - Like a cricket bat!
 22. +1 to Paul S and the suggestion to peruse the classifieds here. you might find a not so cheapo bass for a cheapo or near cheapo price. Might even be able to sell it on without a loss (try doing that with 99.9% of new instruments!).
 23.
Did you use copper foil with electrically conductive glue ? Use a multimeter to check - mine had only 0.008 ohm resistance between jack socket and furthest point away You probably have a break somewhere Thought : you did join the shielding to earth right ? You can curl some up under the bell plate
Aye, I checked with the multimeter - no real resistance. I used the conductive adhesive type of foil. I should mention my definition of noise is if it buzzes or blips when close to a harddrive or monitor. Even with the stock pickups when facing away from the source of noise ( the running PC) the shielding cut down noise to near zero. The two neck pickups however had a hiss in every position. Now with RWRP pickups, when they're both on they humcancel pretty much perfectly. I need to be biased towards one pickup and a few inches from a EMF source to have any serious noise. Hiss is slight when pickups are biased - but they're single coils so it is what it is!
 24.
I've had one from that year and it was silent once copper shielded
Cool. For my one it only cut the noise down about 30%. New pickups have 1% of the previous (stock) pickups noise when both on, 10% or less when soloed.
 25. I just got a set of pickups from the creamery - very nice IMHO. What about the 70's fender set? seems a logical place to start!
