I got my Compact/V today after just over 10 weeks waiting. Sweet. Now I just need an amp and a speaker cable (both on route, the amp definately, the cable might be a mix-up . . . ) I'm dying to try it. I love the grille cloth and the light weight. It's very strudy and sounds well dampened and braced when tapped. The coating feels nasty but looks good and no doubt the touch-up ability will come into it's own in time.

Ohhh. . . . Compact came in the post. Nice. It's really well sized - pretty shallow - and is light. If only I had an amp to test it with. mb fusion is on the way, but I'm not sure where I'll be getting a speakon which I kinda need. I've made some enquiries, and will reveiw when I've tested it. Here: EDIT: Speakon and amp on the way. Dying to get rocking. Having the cab in the house with nothing to play through it is pretty frustrating.

I am eagerly awaiting my mb fusion.... should be in this week. Then I can test my compact and break her in. . .

Fair enough . . . We shan't all like the same things - I've yet to have the experience of A/Bing a bunch of rigs and head types so I'm gonna reserve judgement. I'd imagine if you can get a high-ish end PA poweramp to run with fairly low distortions using class D design - a bass head can do it too, at least as well, as bass needs a far less hi-fi sound. Well a bit less as I understand it. Some do have a thing for 'heavy iron' and that's totally up to them. I don't know enough to know either way - but my guess is a lot of it is psychoacoustic.

Ok... Compact/V and GK mb fusion on the way - pending clearing of a few bits. I am excited!
yo lads, we should have a bass meet up. in a pub. a real CHEAP pub. (yeah.... im from ballymena )
Sounds like fun. My trick to drinking within my means is to drink less and less often. Sucks but I far prefer it to drinking at home. I love Duvel - but it's €5 a glass (about 330 ml).

Willkommen aus BRASSCHAAT! I am on the isle generally referred to as green in addition. You have quite the bass harem. Nice. Welcome and don't forget to keep the pigeons off yer loafers!

Was it the amp or the cab that I fell in love with?
PlungerModerno replied to stefBclef's topic in Amps and Cabs
Could be Eq, could be the room - could even be that you happened to 'feel' it at that moment. If a cab can produce a given frequency, it is just as 'fast' as another cab. You know those high end headphones that have small drivers - they can go to 20Hz or even lower. The reason people go for 15" and 18" in PA subs and in many bass rigs is one of cost. You need a more complex, expensive and heavy cab to get a given low end sensitivity (i.e. loudness out per watt in) with smaller drivers in general. Have a read: http://barefacedbass.com/technical-information.htm http://barefacedbass.com/bgm-columns.htm And check out these: http://billfitzmaurice.info/forum/ http://www.billfitzmaurice.com/ Very helpful material IMO. It's way outside my expertise to critique this - but it seems to be really well founded in experiment and acoustic theory. Enjoy! -
Whoa! no new estimate - but apparently I can expect a package very soon after exchanging the dosh...
Similarly, the Mesa Walkabout is small, fairly light, and not Class D. And all the better for it.. Ooh, controversy, etc.
Exactly... or not. I'd say there's a bunch of reasons to like either... mesa are pretty legendary, and that might have as much to do with it as the choice of power section class. YMMV.
I'm at week 11 waiting for my compact. Fingers crossed it won't be too much longer!
just started week 9. The waiting game sucks.... let's play hungry hungry hippos!

I purchased Mace's G&L tribute L-2500. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/178790-sold/ Posted from the UK to Ireland - Arrived unscathed, In a hardcase inside a box - all wrapped up well so there was no way for the bass to bounce around in there. The instrument was in the condition described (v. good & clean). Great member to deal with - via email or phone. Thank you!

Why fans? Why not proper passive cooling?
PlungerModerno replied to fretmeister's topic in Amps and Cabs
It's not really loud at all but the amp is also my home practice amp if I'm not using headphones. I'm a computing enthusiast and I'm currently 2 feet away from a huge metal box with 3 140mm fans, 2 120mm fans and a 180mm fan. Id guess the GK was easily twice as loud, and at a much more annoying frequency (likely because of the amp's fan's smaller diameter).
I guess it depends on the fans and the ambient and running temperatures. Page 9 of: http://www.gallien-krueger.com/productmanuals/160-0540-A%20MB%20FusionManual.pdf Quote "Continuously variable fan cooling" So does that mean (and it mightn't) if the tubes are hot the fans are loud... which, combined with the full voltage on the pre tubes... wait: Cool Running = Reliability: To cool the amp when its being driven hard, we’ve designed a temperature sensitive fan cooling system. When the amp is under a light load, the fan is off or running at a low speed, reducing fan noise. As the amp works harder, the fan speed increases to keep everything cool. Well I guess that means loud fans . -
Welcome. Enjoy yourself and don't worry about coasters. We have a cap for that.

My Barefaced Super Twelve finally arrived!!!
PlungerModerno replied to Johnnyc's topic in Amps and Cabs
lol practice on sunday... but the drummer can't make it so he's sending the drum tracks from the records mixed into the tracks we play along to! I decided to go without the tweeter. Didn't want the extra cost or weight, and I don't do any slap so I don't really need the ultra highs. Tweeterless seems to go more than high enough, and if I ever do wanna slap I just push the 'bright' button on my amp and it gives you plenty of high end.
Better than sitting at home with a drum machine (which can be fun but you know...). Tweeters are definitely not essential for most people. They might be nice - I may look at a midget T after the compact... we'll see.
