1. And it's whose, not who's.
2. You could argue that it's actually the most conscientious sellers who refuse to risk things getting damaged in the post.
3. How easy do you reckon it would be to get that decal to come off? And can you measure the heel?
4. ka-'hon /ka/ as in cat /hon/ as in Honiton Stress on the /hon/ And yes it has many meanings but here just means big box.
5. Cabasas and shekeres are similar but not the same. The Gil Scott Heron clip featured a big ol' shekere.
6. Right, yes, I knew that, but why call it tracking instead of recording? There isn't any difference, that I can see.
7. Why is recording an instrument sometimes called tracking?
8. Have any of you synthy people come across this before: http://www.ploytec.com/pl2/ Tiny little thing, powered by midi, how crazy is that? I'm thinking about buying the kit version: https://www.usb-audio.com/pl2_assembly_kit/ (I still need to learn to solder.)
9. Shekere gourd/bead thing.
10.
Yes, I've seen those too. The Horniman Museum has a truly fantastic collection of instruments.
It is a bonkers old place. The cathedral of death on the main floor with Blobby the Massive Crap Walrus in the middle, the incredible music room, the unusual ethnographic bit, it's all a bit mad.
11. I'm sure I've seen old stringed instruments (as in ones from the 18th century) in the Horniman Museum that used a similar technique to play the strings.
12. For what it's worth (not much, I expect): http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/software/1288996/photobox
13. What's the attraction of those big black squares rather than normal dots?
14. For professional-quality prints, I use www.peak-imaging.com. For high-street printing, Snappy Snaps is often said to be the best and most 'professional', despite the name.
15. Wow, yeah, it just arrived and I've been playing about with it on a synth arpeggio. Really, really, really nice.
16. It turns out I was using the wrong power supply, that was all. Yes it certainly does do that squidgy and yummy compression; really nice. Speaking of really nice, on a drunken whim I bought an FMR RNC on eBay last night, for some reason. Which means I now have four compressors (Behringer Composer, Focusrite Penta, Joemeek VC3Q, FMR RNC), none of which I particularly need, but seem to enjoy owning. I should probably sell one or two of them. Or! Find a use for them. I've been buying microphones as well.
17. That's a lot of pasta.
18. Hang on, aren't narrower strings less compliant?
19. God I'd never thought about that. I'm on a Global Communication album from 20 years ago, doing a funny voice, which I did by phoning up Tom's answerphone and leaving a message. I wonder how much I'm due. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3f_HCmWzsg
20. It's actually an interesting challenge; can the Basschat Christmas Collective come up with a festive song, in collaboration. By committee, as it were. Define it, from the actual chords and notes, to the words, the instruments used, the production treatment applied, etc. Does anyone like the idea? It'd never work, would it.
21.
XLRs are used for many different signal levels.
Right, yes, as I suspected. Thanks.
What you need is balanced cable, not a stereo.
Need for what? I don't follow.
TRS jacks are used for balanced mono and unbalanced stereo, however the cable type is different for each.
Blimey. How can they be told apart?
22.
Not necessarily matey, it may be a balanced signal but still might have more or less than the input will like. I prefer to have a level knob on any di send so I can make sure the desk gets the right line level signal
I don't quite know if that answered my question or not.
23. Stupid question: just because something takes, or sends out on, an XLR cable, doesn't mean that it's mic level, does it. Or does it?
24. Ted just got back to me saying that "it behaves normally. The compressor on these units is extremely smooth, it was designed to be that way." He's going to test everything again, but it's working as it should, he seems to think. And he designed the blummin' thing, so he should know, really. So, er, there you go.
