1. By strange coincidence, I decided to learn this a couple of nights ago and found it surprisingly easy to play. Only took an hour. I'd always avoided trying it previously as I didn't want to depress myself! :-) CB
2. Duran Duran without John Taylor. Eastenders without Martin Kemp. CB
3. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. CB
4.
Pino Palladino is not the bassist for The Who. I don't know who IS, but getting a mate in to do the job of one of the best bassists of all time is frankly a joke. AS far as The Who are concerned, I've gone from passes to staying at home.
Which one was it that you were referring to as one of the best bassists of all time? CB
5. Paul Young Japan Chic Beatles (66 onwards) Paul Simon (Graceland only) Shalamar Has anyone noticed in all our posts how few modern bands have bass players we regard as indispensible? CB
6. Tom, Very poor form not to offer bribery when asking for corruption old bean. They go together my good man. Now, how much for my vote? CB
7. Shouldn't there also be a screw right in the centre of the scratchplate? CB
8. Oh, you will find plenty of threads on this site about his antics involving cruelty to stringed instruments. Here is one example. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/190191-guess-who CB
9. Well folks, I went and bought it. Really nice instrument, but the action was just slightly high for me. So I sent it to a luthier who comes highly recommended. Chap by the name of Mark Phillips. CB
10.
Mmm.Dont wanna appear ignorant but its not listed as a Bongo, they even state its not a made by MM so whats the deal? There are loads of copies of famous brands on Ebay but no one seems to complain about the hundreds of Jazz copies sold every week! Maybe I am missing the point or are Fender copies exempt? On the flip side, everyone moans about Mr Hall and his protection of the R brand! I have a Alembic Series one copy.I cant afford a real one and know its a copy so were is the problem?
I think it's because you didn't see the original ad on eBay. This instrument isn't a copy - it's a counterfeit. To explain - the original advert showed the MusicMan Bongo logo on the headstock. Only once we got in contact with eBay did the seller add his comments about it perhaps not being a MusicMan instrument. In light of all this, we believe the verbose answers and explanations the seller provided to be dishonest. And we're generally disappointed that eBay, with this knowledge, allows the sale to go ahead. CB
11. Sorry mate. Bit tired tonight. And thanks for response. CB
12. Yea, you're right silldx. You've a fairly valid point. Just a bit frustrating that there's no response - even to tell us no dice. It is a great forum, and I do appreciate the effort the mods and admins put in. But don't forget we ALL put quite a lot of time and effort into it. CB
13. Oh for goodness sake folks - this is hardly rocket science. A small piece of effort here would go a long way to making things easier for a lot of us. Thread now almost 2 years old. A simple "yes we will do this in by dd/mmm/yyyy" or "no we can't do this because of technical reason xyz" is all the courtesy we ask for. CB
14. I think the seller's feedback does show. Just that the bidder's real ID isn't revealed. Perhaps he tried this last time in order to prevent folk like us messaging the bidders. CB
15. I reckon it's the same one - not paid for by previous buyer. Been keeping an eye on his feedback and it didn't increase. If anyone had bought something like this, I think the feedback would have been left one way or another. Note, he's photoshopped (badly) the logo off. CB
16. http://www.music-man.com/techinfo_old/controls/cfd_bongo_hh_4eq.pdf Hope this helps. Can't understand why forum software in this day and age makes it so bloody difficult to attach files. CB
17. Perhaps the cardboard/polystyrene assembly might sound ok if the purchaser swaps the strings onto it. CB
18. I do hope one of us "bought" it. CB
19. Perhaps the best way to handle this is to snipe the bass at the last minute and then take a week or so to decide not to pay, based on the fact that it's not legal? Would that work? CB PS: Sorry to get a bit hyper about this but I do love Bongos and don't want someone to be landed with this pile of scrap. Unless they are a pro guitar bodger of course.
20. All this talk of replica/copy is annoying and misleading. It's a counterfeit. The none-too-subtle difference is that IT'S ILLEGAL. Do Trading Standards have a whistle-blower link? Or is there a better body to report it (and eBay) to? CB
21. Chrismuzz - I've reported it to eBay twice now. And they seem to have done absolutely nothing about it. Please do report it as well. It's possible that eBay's systems work on the principle that they don't listen to one person, but is a number of people point to a counterfeit, then it triggers an alert to take action. If any of the rest of you are reading this - it would help to add to the eBay reports. CB PS: Jaybass70 - what was the message with the advert? Not sure what you were getting at?
22. I don't like Ricks either. But hey - some folk have hands and ears that Ricks fit perfectly. My recommendation would be to spend your energy on something a bit more positive. Tell us about what you DO like. BCers just love to find a new player, piece of music or piece of equipment that we've never considered before. CB
23. I totally love my Markbass 121p. I liked my Markbass 801 practice combo so much that I bought the Markbass 121p combo (complete with custom soft carry case) from another BC'er a couple of months ago. It is so convenient that I've been choosing to ditch the gear in the recording studio and bring this along instead. A couple of weeks ago our drummer actually stopped the song we were playing to compliment the sound of the bass. Now there's something that doesn't normally happen! I was playing my Bongo 4HH through the Markbass 121p combo with all of the amp's settings flat and just using the combo's own speaker at that point. Hope this helps. CB
24.
What about contacting eBay about the counterfeit?
Done. CB
25. Okay - you forced me into it - it's a Wrongo :-) On a more serious note. These aren't copies. Copies display the legitimate manufacturer on the headstock. These are illegal fakes. Given Chinese efficiency and the fact that they aren't going to tool up just to turn out a small number, you have to wonder just how many of these are in circulation. And how many budding players are being hindered or put off. We're all quick (and right) to get uptight about MD Phillips' misadventures. This is just as bad in my book. Doubly bad, in fact, as the potential is there for MDP to start importing these and then doing a "professional" setup on them. CB
