Dear me but I don't like sunburst in any guitar. Never did. Yeuch. Strangely tobacco sunburst doesn't seem quite so bad and I must be getting old, because I'm starting to like EBMM's honeyburst. EBMM blueburst is just woeful. Seems like it's trying too hard to be hip and cool. Worst of all, by a country mile, is EBMM cherryburst. What WERE they thinking? Looks like an old buttondown leather sofa. Appalling. If I found a StingRay in this colour unexpectedly in my attic. I would back away slowly, never to return. Just saying like. CB

Or you could try to find one of those 'mini' Stingrays that Pino plays? They look pretty darn small. CB
-
What about an old Fender Musicmaster Bass? Would that still be a bit big? Probably they are getting expensive these days. So perhaps one of the Mustang/Bronco reissues? Or a Steinberger type thingy. Or a violin bass? CB

The general public are discovering the 'Bass Guitar'!
The "girl" who clearly gets it is a professional singer.
Ha ha . My bad. Although I think there are a lot of pro singers who don't 'get it' either. :-) Is she well known? CB -
I did mate, but I thought I'd just play you along a little hence the
Ah, no worries. I really don't get the whole roadworn thing at all. I can ALMOST understand companies reproducing the wear/patina characteristics of a small number of specific iconic artist instruments I guess - Francis Rossi green telecaster might be an example and I'm not even sure if Fender have reproduced it. Jaco's Jazz would be another. But just beating an instrument up randomly (manufacturer or other person) - I don't get. And for all the discussion - I agree you're right to be pointing it out where you think a bass is being misrepresented to poor unwitting buyers. CB

Whatever is going on? Pino interviewed on the One Show on Friday by a girl who clearly "gets it" and was picking up on some specific phrasing etc. Now this morning on Sunday Sequence on Radio Ulster, the reporter (rather than simply ignoring a text from an anorak), read out said text question "ref the new Dallas TV theme tune - why have they replaced the slap bass in the intro with drums instead?" Crikey. Bass guitar is soon going to be like TCP/IP networking 20 years ago. All of a sudden your girlfriend asks you an "informed" question about something you thought no normal person would have heard of and you think "what?!?". CB
-
Ref Gary Numan I assassin - apologies - wasn't ignoring it (I have the album), but it was more just that I was talking about the event which brought Pino to mainstream attention and that's why I focused on the No Parlez album. CB
-
Did anybody notice the presenter girl (the one sitting with Evans - not the red haired one) was trying to tell us by way of introduction, how the song would have been nothing without Pino's bassline, but she gave up when Evans kept talking over the top of her. Shame. CB
-
You're so right. My preference is for one which is almost new but with a few little usage marks here and there - just so there is no room for me to beat myself up for making the first dint on an otherwise perfect bass. CB
-
How very dare you! :-) Thought you might spot my comment was somewhat tongue in cheek. CB
-
Wasn't it great - and oh so surprising to see that the the raison d'etre of the feature was about how Pino and the bassline MADE the song. How strange to see people 'get it' on a mainstream telly programme. CB
The Fretless MM stingray is what he was known for at the time, and he used to "slap it up" a bit too! wouldn't touch a Precision back then. How times change.
+1 '79 Fretless SR plus Boss OC-2 plus an obliging sound engineer on Paul Young's No Parlez album were the 3 ducks which lined up to bring Pino charging into to our lives in the first place. For many of us, it's more of a case of "This is all too confusing - what's Pino doing with a fretted precision?". CB
-
We're actually talking about tight radii on the headstocks of copy basses! Stop the world - I want to get off! CB
The bloke 2nd from bottom on here http://www.fender.co...pic.php?p=59965 seems to know the in's and out's on Fender's use of the skunk stripe.
I read it and I'm not buying his story :-) My experience was mostly of instruments from '74 to about '82 and in that period the numerous Fender Ps and Js that I was in direct contact with did not have the stripe if they had a rosewood fretboard. Sid Vicious' mid 70s precision would be an example. CB PS: Just noticed this thread is starting to live up to its title. :-) :-)
-
Ref stripe - I've no knowledge of what goes on with various copies. But back in the days of just Fender P's and J's, all the ones with rosewood boards were stripeless. CB
-
Lack of skunk stripe...
Not making any comment on what this bass is or isn't....but I thought that you only tended to get the skunk stripe with maple fingerboards, as it was necessary to cut a channel in the back of the neck to install the truss rod, whereas with rosewood, the fretboard would be lifted to install the rod. Suggestion: Enable Tapatalk for iphone, Android, etc.
cloudburst replied to Stuee's topic in Site News
It would be much appreciated if you could add Basschat to the Tapatalk network. I use this for the EBMM forum and TalkBass - much more convenient than the site's native mobile version. Tapatalk supports the IP Forum framework which BC is based on. All it takes is to enable the plugin and add BC to the Tapatalk network. http://tapatalk.com/activate_tapatalk.php?plugin=ipb Thanks in advance. CB -

Now I'm no psychologist but it seems probable that getting hit by the lorry left Mark with some unwanted grooves in his nuts and he is taking it out on the guitars. In all seriousness though, poor chap - getting hit by a lorry is no joke so perhaps we should cut him some slack. I have a friend (John the Yawn) who got hit by a lorry and it left him with that disease where you fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Coincidentally, I think he is also now sh*t at luthiery. CB
-
You are right - it does explain a lot. Whilst working as a commercial helicopter pilot I have learned a lot about microlight pilots. Never mind lorries - many of them were lucky to escape being hit by helicopter. They don't seem to realise that if they don't speak on the radio, flight information service can't relay their presence to the rest of us. And if they don't use a transponder, they don't appear on our TCAS. The guitar stuff does not surprise me. But you have to wonder is such a serial meddler can resist the temptation to tinker with his aircraft. Shudder. CB

Ahem... http://www.blogger.com/profile/17022429530833375584 Love what he's written to round off his "favourite music"... CB

Just to be fair to Birdsong and follow up. The chaps on the Talkbass forum told me that this would be out of character for Scott at Birdsong, that his computer had been down and to try again. What do you know - he has responded and seems like a really helpful and clued in guy. :-) I now need to decide to continue on my quest for a fretless Ray or go off-piste and try an Embrace. CB
-
Looks like he's cheating by using a pint-sized Precision! :-)
-
Well I emailed Birdsong a week ago asking to purchase an Embrace fretless - and what response did I get? None. Seems the good ol USofA hasn't been hit by the recession. CB

Many thanks Andy for buying my 51 RI Precision. I hope you have a long relationship with it. Pleased you like it so much. And thanks for taking the trouble to come from Scotland to visit my place in Northern Ireland too! Was lovely to meet you and Folks - Andy is a great laid-back guy to deal with. Do so with confidence. CB
