1.
I had a bongo, it played like butter. To this day I wish I could have got on with the complex preamp.
No wonder we both think it plays like butter - it's YOUR ex-Bongo! :-) unknown (TB forum) -> garythenuke (EBMM forum Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, California) -> unknown -perhaps Strontium Dog (Kevin, somewhere UK) -> Playground_Martyr (BC-er) -> ryancowell25 -> cocco (BC-er) -> Robert Manning (BC-er) -> mikegatward (BC-er) -> cloudburst (BC-er) This little Bongo stops here. I have fallen in love. CB
2. Thanks for nice comments. Still for sale. CB
3.
...in the lovely CC music...
Sounds like some irony there. I'd love to hear the story! :-) CB
4. I've a few genuinely niaive questions about Jaguar basses: 1) Are they a new thing or did they exist back in the day? I thought the Jags were just guitars. 2) What do all the slider switches do on some models? They look complicated. 3) What do they sound like? 4) The conventional ones seem to have J pickups and the reverse has these big humbuckers. Does that not make them very different instruments that shouldn't really share the same name? To the OP: Lovely looking instruments by the way. All the best with yours. CB
5. If you're playing in a punk band, perhaps the nut is the only fret you'll ever need. Think of all the fun to be had with E-flat A-flat D (lucky) and G-sharp. Just joking of course (as was my previous comment about the good ship Venus having already set sail 35 years ago. In an ideal world, choice of a fretless should be less about genre and more about the idea you create for a particular song needing to be played on a fretless. Just my HO. CB
6. Hi CJ, What is it about music and aviation in Northern Ireland! I come from Northern Ireland and was working over there as a helicopter pilot. Now living in Glasgow. CB
7. Hmm. Now I may be wrong - but I'm thinking that any value that this instrument may or may not have held is now long gone. Personally, I'd avoid. But that's me. CB
8.
I've got an imperial Allen key set and I don't think I've ever used it. All hex bolts I've ever met seem to be metric ( not sure about US Fenders though, but my MIJ is metric ).
Music Man bridge saddles are 1/16" hex. CB
9. I did own a StingRay for a while in the late 80s. Prefer the feel of the Bongo in every way. But that's not to say I don't like StingRays. I do. Just I'm starting to think the Bongo is a bit of a well kept secret. CB
10. I never really saw a problem with the looks. There are probably a lot of folk who haven't actually seen a Bongo in the flesh. I hadn't until mine arrived. They are actually quite small. What is it about the neck that folk don't like? I've small hands and am used to a 74 Jazz with a stick insect's manhood for a neck and I find the Bongo just fine. I'd been a bit concerned about a satin finish but was pleased to find it nice and shiny. CB

12. Can't put it down mate. Really. That's got to be a good thing. CB
13.
For me, Graceland is all about the tiny details. When Paul sings "The bomb in the baby carriage was wired to the radio" on the record, he gives it a lovely melody that lifts at the end and really locks in with the sudden drive of the bassline into the chorus. It is a moment of true genius in a small detail that has a huge impact on the song.
For me it's the emphasis in 'Graceland' itself that he gives the last T in heartT - "Losing love is like a window in your hearT..." You got it Chris, it's the little things. CB
14.
I've got about another 3 and a half month wait for mine!
How come? CB
15. Is it not 35 years too late for a punk band? CB
16.
Pics!
Here you go :-) CB
17. Watching that video - I'm thinking possibly his D string is out of tune. And that bass would scare small children. What is that all about? CB
18.
I really enjoyed the program and wish I'd recorded it for further viewing. Not just the music, although that was great and well covered, but the politics and cheap tricks in the US and also the delight of the band going to London and New York especially when they asked where they could get a permit so that they could walk in Central Park!
As Doctor J mentioned, Graceland was reissued last month and the deluxe edition of the CD also includes this documentary on DVD. CB

Bongo

Got my Bongo 4HH today. OMG. Structural reinforcements to house and furniture required. All other instruments packed up into their little cases and put into the toy cupboard. Bless them. OMG. CB
20. Never has it seemed more appropriate to say "this post is useless without pictures" :-) CB
21.
Joni Mitchell also likened bass as 'that horrible brick wall in my music' (with the exception of Jaco and Larry klein)
Daft bint.
22. I bought Mike's Bongo HH. What a lovely instrument. You can be 100% confident that Mike is a great bloke to deal with. Mike's communications were spot on - even supplying a tracking number that actually worked! My first ever. Bass arrived next day delivery, very well packed. Even after the transaction was complete, Mike went the extra mile (without me asking) and found the key for the case and dropped it in the post for me. Many thanks Mike. Keep in touch and we'll get a beer sometime (unless this Bongo causes structural damage to my house). Regds, Gary.

24. Well worth watching for the beautiful tone and rhythm of Bakithi Khumalo. CB
25. If you can afford it... then I reckon there are worse things you can do to feed the retail addition than buying bass guitars. Buying most things loses you money as they aren't resalable or else depreciate. Not buying anything will make you anxious and will lose you money at Rate of Inflation minus Interest on Savings. Which effectively means losing money at the Rate of Inflation :-/ Buy a bass and it'll probably appreciate in value AND you get to enjoy it at the same time. Try that with a Ferrari or an Ulster Bank savings account. One of these is difficult to get into, will make your money disappear and cause your friends to laugh at you. And the other is a Ferrari. Make that move. Buy that bass. CB PS: I'm selling my precision on here :-)
