Does anyone else get more excited writing their own stuff than trying covers? We started out playing covers, and to be honest it was all getting a bit jaded, the rehearsal sessions were a nice boys night out but that was about it. We've written two of our own songs, resurrected an old one from the guitarists previous band and now we're part way through our third song. There is more enthusiasm than we've had for a while, there's even talk about finding a gig which was unheard of at the beginning of the year. Once I've cleaned up the recording I'll put the new versions up in the Recording section.

I don't like them. So I don't!
-
It would appear that their sound guy is doing what they asked. I'm assuming, and I don't know, that it's a different person for each band, Black Honey and Royal Blood were as clear as, only At The Drive In were playing through a mattress.

You don't think it should have been "Heft"? I'll get me coat....

Royal Blood, At the Drive In and Black Honey at the NIA on Saturday. Black Honey were amazing, At the Drive In may have been amazing but you couldn't hear anything apart from the high treble guitar solo and the bass drum, the difference between the sound for them and Black Honey was night and day. It may have been what they wanted but it left me waiting for them to finish, from the singers comments on the lines of "Come on, it's not like we're here or anything" and "Welcome to our rehearsal" I wasn't the only disinterested party in the audience. Royal Blood were OK. I enjoyed them but I'm not rushing out to buy anything by them or another show ticket. A bit samey to my ears, but the everyone else liked them so they're doing something right.

I've got a Behringer Q802USB for home noodling and I've used for the local players group to take a monitor out and laptop and radio mic in. Nice bit of kit IMHO.

Ooo, you horrors As a technical point that I keep reading about, are the same gauge flats the same tension as rounds? My Roto 66s are 45 to 130 or thereabouts. Do I need a lighter or heavier string to get a similar feel?

Cheers, I'll give the Labella's a go. Anyone selling a set of 760FL-Bs?
-
I'm being a bit naughty and lazy here, I'm sure there's a flats discussion thread somewhere, but searching flatwound, flatwounds or flat* doesn't return it, unless it's so far back in the past... Anyhoo, I like a clanky/middy tone, like new Roto 66's. Does anyone know of any flats sound close to this? I've seen a lot of positives for Thomastik Jazz flats, but at nearly £70 for a packet it's a lot just to try out. I had a look in the for sale section, but you're all selling 4 string sets

I'm going for us all wearing khaki warehouse coats for load in /load out and then on stage black bottom half and white uppers. No prescription on what they are, but I'll draw the line at someone wearing black speedos and a white string vest. I'm going for an Eton collar evening shirt and cut off combats. It might work

Tour in the offing?
Isn't there a famous comedic character with a pen collection ? i've already googled Alan Partridge ,and Arthur Dent and the Royston Vasey shop owner but no luck so far...
There's supposed to be a planet populated entirely by all the lost and forgotten biro pens. I'm not sure whether fountain pens live there as well.

A guitarist is auditioned and can't take a "no thanks"
You know the rule - if you haven't met one - it's you!
Definitely me, I keep noodling in the breaks during rehearsal. Most of the time I remember to turn the volume down or turn my tuner on. It has happened that I looked up from whatever I was playing at the time to realise everyone was waiting for me to finish mucking about and practice the next song. On the other hand, random noodling has created two new songs... -
They hated your suggestion of building a non-standard Tele didn't they

"It drives me nuts when luthiers put flat pickups on a bass with a radiused neck, for example." from http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2013/04/03/bass-ramps-the-how-and-why/ Are there any other sort of pickups? Short of having the windings or case custom made.

I use Auritech Music with my band and Auritech Travel on the bike, the Christmas tree type, not the custom fit ones. I've no real evidence that they work beyond the fact that I don't have ringing in my ears after either activity!
I then put the inserts in by putting them onto a threaded rod and turn the drill by hand to force them into the hole. This ensures then go in vertically rather than wobbling around all over the place which is what happens if I do it by hand.
How do you screw the inserts in? I'm refurbishing a garden bench at the moment, and on all the inserts I've seen the thread goes all the way through, so using a threaded rod like that won't screw the insert in. I did think of lining it up with a piece of plain bar, but again you can't get the hex key in the end to screw it in as the bar/threaded rod is in the way. Confuddled

Ok so one of these isn't an original, but it's an indication of how far we've come since I started recording us, and for once the levels were about right so you can mostly hear everything The other three are absolutely work in progress and neither the drummer or vocalist couldn't make the session so Matt had to play and sing. Have a listen and see what you think. I'm just impressed that I've managed to write workable songs I've changed the link to a SoundCloud one, it allows comments and the like. https://soundcloud.com/simon-orchard/sets/330ml

If this is in the wrong section then please move it, it's part of the backline/monitoring world though When to use the phantom power option on my mixer? My mics are Behringer SM58 clones (I think) plus a drum mic. The vocalist has a real SM58. Do I need to use the PP for these? If I do, and that's fine, can I then run an XLR cable from my amp and the guitarists amp to the mixer for monitoring/recording purposes without damaging anything, would it be better to get an active DI box for both of the amps to isolate them from electrical death?
Saw this for real at the SE Bash. It looks and feels good enough to eat
Hey, you can't reveal a finished bass anywhere else then the Midlands Bass Bash. Then you can take it on tour once we've vetted it

Finished Pics! To the dark side Build One - Alembic-esque Electric
Si600 replied to Andyjr1515's topic in Build Diaries
Why are you using a piezo bridge as well as magnetic pickups, is the sound noticeably different when playing? -
I was using the Z-Tron, I've had a proper go at it and I've given up on all the synth modellers, they've all got the "buwahp' artifact at the beginning of most notes but not consistently. I've gone to the Flanger now, with a rate and resolution that is fast enough to sound almost flat. It works well in my opinion.

Andyjr1515 used something on the Psilos bass that hardly darkened the wood, to the extent that to my eyes from the photos it looks unfinished. That may be of interest?
-
Cool, thanks chaps. I'm in Scotland from tomorrow, but I'll have a play when I get back and let you know how I get on.

I'm having a slight problem getting a synth sound I like from my MS60B, the three or four simulated pedals in there all start the note with a weird muwah-pop kind of thing. I'm using something else as a synth as it sounds better, but it's still not great. Does anyone have any general settings that I can start with to get an 80's synth sound? It's for Kids in America for reference.
