1. My 2010 P-Bass should be vintage in about 30 years
2. I don't want to come over as offensive or difficult, but if the thing you want isn't available locally, start your own. There wasn't a local Bass Bash to me so I organised it and our third one is going to be next year. I also wanted a jam night and I'm in discussions with the local as to when they want to host it and we should be starting in the new year. I'm not sure where all this community and social organisation has come from mind, I'm normally an insular and asocial person! I must be getting old...
3. My budget isn't limitless obviously, but I can comfortably afford one of the two systems I've seen in the classifieds for £750. I'm thinking of the 1200w one in Watford. It's way over powered for a jam night but the desk has lots of channels for DI so I can control all the levels without needing separate amps and I can use it for my own band should we ever actually gig! Am I right in thinking that a DI unit is essentially an instrument to XLR adapter to allow you to plug straight into the desk? Passive or active DI?
4. Er, right now I don't have one! I'm hoping to pick the bits from the for sale section either as a complete PA or piece by piece.
5. Cheers for that. What happens if it's acoustic only so you can't plug it into a DI box?
6. Not that I'm stupid or anything but I've offered to run a jam night in our village. I've got quite a lot of interest and an offer from the local to host it. All well and good you might think, however, I have no microphones! I'm think of three to start with, two for vox and one to mic up any acoustic instruments if necessary. What would the BC massive recommend to cover both those requirements?
7. I need to work out my transposition though, the first guitarist singer I worked with used a capo, so not only do I not know any Bob Dylan, I also couldn't follow his fingers. I did get some rock n roll later in the evening so could bash out the old 12 bar which was really good fun and look like I knew what I was doing
8. I did my very first live stand up in front of people and make a fool of yourself tonight at Rushden live music night at the conservative club. It could have gone better and definitely showed up the gaping holes in my playing but it was good fun and I'm definitely going back the week after next if anyone fancies a laugh at my expense
9. Imelda May I think, last December, she and her band were great, a really good show. I'm hoping to see Backyard Babies this Sunday, if I can persuade anyone to come with me.
10. Alice Cooper. He was brilliant the first time I saw him in Nottingham, but just slow and a bit boring the second time at the NEC supporting Motörhead. Bit of a shame really. The Sisters of Mercy weren't that much cop either, but my mate I went with said they're either amazing or pants.
11. The description is interesting, "Genuine Fender Telecaster made from licenced parts". So a sweet wrapper wrapped bitsa then?
12. I've done that. Sort of. My bass case was behind the sofa whilst we had some work done in the house so it was accessible. I kicked it, mid swing of a normal step, and broke something in the middle toe of my right foot. Funny colour foot, a toe at a funny angle and a trip to A&E in the morning.
13. I'm not great at singing, but not terrible either IMHO. However, if I try and do BV's I forget how to play!
14.
No issues in MY band. everybody does what they're told, or else.
This ^ I've got minor issues with people not putting the effort into learning their parts, but I'm as guilty as the rest on that one! My biggest gripe is getting a text or a phone call just before rehearsal saying someone can't make it for a reason that can't have been a surprise, but if that's my biggest problem I can't be doing too badly
15. The low B means you can play it in standard tuning and still get the open A and E in it Hooray for 5ers Personally I quite like playing it, but our singer doesn't, so we don't.
16.
+1 on "Build Your Own Electric Guitar" by Melvyn Hiscock i built my DIY guitar and bass using that book in the woodwork room at school! (they didn't turn out great but it wasn't the books fault!)
Snap!
17. I don't suppose that anyone has a double P bass near me to try out before I take a router to my bass?
18. Woo! Tour to support it in the offing?
19. Cheers. I positioned it in the centre of the wall facing the drums and angled my and the guitarists in towards it. Possible front row of the audience If anything it's our drummer who's a bit loud, I can go much louder, I'm around the 10 o'clock position on my amp I'll play with the levels next time and see what happens.
20. So, first outing results. Ignore the fact that none of us can play or sing or even stay in time... 21. I got my Zoom H4n yesterday and tried it out at last night's session. I put it at the opposite end of the room to the drums and angled both my rig and the guitarists towards it. I used the 120 degree option. Listening back to the results on the night, it's all drum and guitar dominated, I've not had chance to listen to it with anything else yet but should I expect to hear it all properly from the Zoom speaker? Any tips for placing it? I've got a camera tripod so it can go anywhere and be height adjustable as well.
22. The only person who puts them away is me. I "throw" them out when I set up but the one between me and the pedal board doesn't seem to behave itself in use.
23. I coil my cables over - under style but both the spare one that lives in the bass case and the one that goes between the pedal board and bass have developed a sort of permanent curl to them. Am I coiling them badly, or doing harm by keeping them coiled when they're in storage as it were?
24. I don't suppose anyone really knows how to play Iron Maiden's Running Free? All the stuff on the net is close but there are some bits I just can't work out and no one else seems to be bothered either. Particularly the run up to the last verse I think it is, I'll listen to it again and jot the timings down if it'll help.
