Here's another one!

I was at Art college in Norwich having the time of my life 82-85. I found a lot of great music, saw lots of great gigs and probably did a bit of art as well somewhere. Out of the blue I just remembered today an album that blew my mind when I bought it in back in 85. I literally haven't heard it for decades as my copy is vinyl, and we have had no room in our house for my record player over the past 27 years of marriage. I need to buy a copy on CD!!! Anyway, yeah so this is it - Stanley Clarke, Find out! I absolutely adored that active bass sound. The playing was immense and the songs were catchy and vibrant. I bought a bunch of Stanley Clarke records afterward, but this one has always been my favourite.

I'm well on the way to finishing guitar build no 5, and I fancy tackling a bass next. I'me just wondering if anyone can help in terms of pickups as I don't actually know much about basses other than playing a few over the years. There are two kinds of sound that I like and I'm wondering what I would need to get them: 1) The Rickenbacker sound that Geddy Lee or Chris Squire used to get around the early days of Rush/Yes 2) an active type sound - like Mark King I guess. Any suggestions for the kind of pickups/electronics would get me in the right ballpark?

I'm (probably) not going to make a Fender copy, but I've made 5 guitars and I like to start with a pdf plan that I can then edit to get it the way I want. It can look radically different but still have the basic geometry of a bass that one likes. Having said that, nothing wrong with making a Fender-like, or any other copy if that is what one wants to do

Is there a resource anywhere for bass plans - postscript pdf rather than image files? I'm looking to make a bass at some point. I'm sure that I had a site bookmarked with a lot of fender stuff, but I can't seem to find it now.

I just can't get enough of this sort of bass playing! love the bass tone. Henrik Linder does get rather too muso for me in some instances, but I love his playing with Dirty Loops, which is very song focussed.

I completely disagree with that. Seems a pretty negative stance to me but hey, we are all different and we are all entitled to an opinion.

Generally I'm a classic rock/prog/metal sort of guy, but I absolutely LOVED Chic! The bass playing was a thing of beauty to my ears, the songs were fantastic and a big trip down memory lane, the musicianship was top notch and they were clearly all having a great time. It was a superb way to see the new year in. I'm not really into the whole firework thing, seen it all a million times before so I didn't watch, I'd have preferred them to play right through personally.

I just finished it with satin cellulose spray, I even omitted doing a bevelled edge to keep the edge square. Thanks for the kind words all. Another guitar underway at the moment then I'll be tackling a bass.

Not a build thread, a finished product thread. My second guitar build is very complex, it had been going wrong all year, and stalled badly. I decided to put it to one side and go for something simple to try and get inspired again, can't get much simpler than a Telecaster. As a twist, I'd recently seen a bunch of Tele's on t'interweb with 'crate' tops and I thought that they looked super cool. As it happened I had an old wine crate in the garage. The crate top in question holds a special place in my heart. It was a Mateus Rose box from my uncle's old off-license. He was my dad's best friend but sadly he died from cancer 20 years ago. It's a nice reminder of my uncle and his shop - a fantastic aladdin's cave of curiosity to my young self. Anyway, spec wise, the body was made from my old mahogany fireplace and some wood found in the street near where I work. Not sure what it is?? That wood also formed the neck. Ebony fretboard, home made clay dots, Kinman noiseless pickups. To say that I am pleased with the final guitar is an understatement, I absolutely love it! Here's some pix:

Chapman stick. I gave it a really good go and could play stuff (video evidence!), but I couldn't get to where I wanted to be. Still have it, but barely touched it in about 9 years.

No probs setting up if you know what you are doing. The tuning stability is amazing, but I do find them a bit clunky and OTT overall. I prefer a more stratty trem for feel.
