Doh, I recorded something ages ago and forgot to post it - was pretty appalling though!

Not really my sort of guitar shape but I'm loving the thread/info/pics. I so want to do this myself one day.

At what stage do you call yourself a bass player?
Angel replied to Blademan_98's topic in General Discussion
I'd say once you play notes that fit and play them in time. That could be a single root note all through a 2 minute punk song! -
At work all day just thinking about getting home and picking my new baby up. Can't wait!

CUSTOM STATUS Headless EMPATHY 5 VERY SPECIAL BASS

I have Status 30-90 on my bass and I absolutely love them. I kind of feel a bit of a heathen using them as they are soooo dead skinny, but the feel just seems to suit my style. I originally went for very light gauge as I get a lot of finger pain with the nails on a couple of my fingers often pulling away from the nail-bed, very painful! The lighter strings seems to help. Anyone else go that narrow?

The 65 looks best to me - a lovely looking bass indeed, the 63 a runner up - nice colour. Another 63 baby here, but I didn't let it sway my opinion!

Big Fan. Superbly crafted songs and some top notch guitarists over the years. An amazing band.

I love his playing style although I have to admit that Level 42 songs don't generally appeal to me. I rather like some, but I can't listen to a lot of them in one go.

I get more kicks hearing my own music than I do other bands'

I can totally understand that, I seem to listen to my stuff a lot! The best bits are where I surprised myself with some improv that seems better than my usual standard! I usually play all the instruments to a very average standard at best (!) but there's just something about a track that you have done all by yourself. I feel quite proud playing them to non-musicians but I shy away from playing stuff to people who are any good as they would realise what a hack musician I am!! -
Stanley Clarke ....... Find Out
I love that album!!!! Great great bass sound. Unfortunately my copy is vinyl, so I haven't played it for a decade or so. I must buy that again on CD. Thanks all for the many great suggestion!

Bought a bass off Steve. Great transaction, good communication throughout, and I'm one happy customer!
Depends where you are, but Terry of TJC Guitars, in Stevenage, Herts, will relic a bass for you. So you can buy the bass you want, then factor in a bit of extra cost for the relicing. his prices are good, and his workmanship is excellent. http://www.tjcguitars.com/
Does he??? Doesn't say so on the website. As it happens, Stevenage is close to me.
The best way to get a "relic" bass: buy a new one and gig it regularly for 20 to 30 years.
I just don't get why people trot out that tired old phrase. MODERN FINISHES DO NOT "RELIC"!!!!!!!! Doh
BTW it's a Chinese knock off and to be fair he never says it's an MM
Well, not in the blurb, but it does say MusicMan Bongo on the headstock!

I like the Sheehan quote! Met him a few years ago, great guy.

Thanks all - plenty to be going on with!

Limelight basses??? Can't find anything on t'interweb 55 precision relic: Yeah, seen that - nice. Apart from not having funding 'right now' though, I definitely feel more of a jazz than a P player.

Been listening a lot to RHCP and Jamiroquai recently. I'm looking for recommendations for albums from other artists with similar funky bass styles. Any suggestions?

I'm not really a bass player, I am someone who has dabbled with basses for a lot of years though. My first couple were 4 string, but then I went to 5 about 16 years ago and didn't look back. The odd time I tried 4 after that it just felt wrong. Anyway, after a couple of years of really not playing bass at all (playing other instruments instead), I have suddenly got into the idea again. A lot of the players that I was getting inspired by again seemed to play 4 string (Zender, Flea, Geddy to name a few) and I just though it would be good to dive in and have a go again. To be honest it feels like a minor revelation to me. I think the long break made a difference. Suddenly it feels so right, and so much easier! I kind of feel that I have found my natural bass home. I have a couple of pieces that really miss the low B string, but I'm gonna persevere and try to work out different ways to play them. I can't believe it, but right now it honestly feels like my number one bass of many years is on the chopping block. I thought I'd keep it forever, but at the moment I'm thinking that its days may well be numbered. It's a reggie Hamilton custom shop 5 string, way better than a player like me deserves! I'll have to have a good think about it. Probably best not to rush into anything ..... Anyway, I don't know why, but it seems unusual to me to go from 5 to 4 strings? Anyone else done it? Maybe it isn't unusual at all?

OK, some love them, some hate them, but for the purposes of this thread maybe we could put all that aside for a bit .... I love the look of old beaten up instruments, and I'd really like the idea of getting some kind of slightly knackered Fendery jazz bass. Looking at options ..... Custom shop too expensive, Roadworn: I tried one the other day and it played superbly, but they seem a tad overpriced and only 2 colours. Anyone know of anywhere that you can get something like a roadworn bass knocked up? custom relicing service or similar? I assume that the roadworn's are just MIM's with a degree of distressing. Anyone know how a regular MIM jazz plays in relation to the roadworn equivalent?
