I can no confirm it was an issue with the string. I got another set from college for free and the E on that is just fine Thanks for the help guys! Much appreciated, James
-
Is that quite a common problem with Rotosound strings then? I think I will give them a call/email them. Thanks for the advice!

I've just restrung/set up my bass and for some unknown reason the E string rattles really badly and I have no sustain whatsoever. I know it's not an action problem because it's a different kind of rattle (if that makes any sense at all). Could it be something to do with the winding of the string itself, because the other strings in the pack were just fine? Has anyone else had a similar problem? Oh and the strings are Rotosound 45-105 Nickel roundwounds (RB45 I think)

Hmmm. I really need to try one of these basses out. I've heard so much about them and I've heard people love the tone. Just wish I had more bassist friends near me that would let me try one!

Oops sorry I forgot to check if there were other threads this time! I've never really liked the U shape too much tbh, always preferred the slimmer necks. I guess that's why I get on with Ibanez so well... Still I definitely need to try out a Warwick at some point just to see why everyone loves them so much and whether I would like one
-
I hadn't thought of that mart... I guess I could ask more about the neck profile or just kinda learn to get on with it lol. I'll mention it on here Bill if I find any in this sort of area too And I'll check out mansons too thanks

Does anyone know of any shops that sell Warwicks that I'd be able to try out in the Bath/Bristol area? I'm thinking about upgrading my 4 string and I'm considering a Corvette $$. If I like the neck and the sound I'll probably buy one second hand somewhere. Thanks for the help
-
Ah thank you. I'll be sure to try this!

Ok I'll follow the Aguilar one I don't actually know what the pre is... Yeah I'll open it up when I get home tomorrow night and have a look. This is the bass I'm getting. I've tried to google the pre but all I find is more Ibanez products so perhaps it's an Ibanez pre? Or a cheap bart or something. I don't know sorry! Ahhh right I've done some more research and I see what you're talking about now. EMG pickups need a 25k pot like you said for volume and blend. I'll check the pots I have on my bass when I get home so hopefully I won't have to change them. We shall see... I'm guessing when I order the preamp they will send me the EQ pots that need replacing too? According to EMG the pups need to be wired so that they go to the blend first, then preamp, then master volume and then the jack. Does this sound normal to you?
-
Wait... So I'll need different pots? I'm confused again lol
-
I already have a bass in the same series with the same pups and preamp and I don't like the tone on it particularly. I've done some reading up on it and most people agree the preamp isn't all that great. I'd just like to experiment around with my two basses and see what pups/preamps work best together if that makes sense? I'm not 100% sure which bass I'll be putting the EMGs/preamp in yet though as I haven't heard the new one yet. I guess there's nothing really wrong with the sound, it's just nothing special. Not to my ears anyway... I got a reply from Aguilar pretty much straight away, this is what they said: "Hello James, Thank you for your interest in the OBP-3! Our preamps are designed to work with any pickup – active OR passive. The only pots you will have to change are the EQ pots that come with the OBP-3 – you can leave the volume and blend pots that are in the bass. I hope this is helpful but please let me know if you have any further questions. Kind regards, --Marco" Thanks for all the help guys, I've learnt a lot from all this!

So as the bass I'm getting (I've now bought it, just waiting to collect it) has a Bartolini preamp (with MK1 pickups, which I think are passive) in it I probably won't be able to use the pots supplied with the Aguilar preamp? I'm getting very confused. I'm going to email tech support and see what they say. I'll post on here the results in case anyone is interested. Oh and I'm guessing a logarithmic pot will have less effect as the resistance is decreased (ie closer to open position)?
-
Ah cheers guys. I thought the preamp would work, just thought I'd make sure. Oh and could someone explain to me what you mean by 25K/50K/250K? I'm new to all this preamp stuff sorry

I'm considering replacing the stock pickups/preamp on an Ibanez I'm going to be buying soon and somewhere on YouTube (I know, probably not the best source) I read that Aguilar preamps don't work with EMGs. Apparently it's something to do with the internal preamp inside EMG pickups and Aguilar preamps are only designed for passive pickups. Now I was wondering if this was true or not? I'd rather not have to spend most of my money to find out and help would be much appreciated! I was considering putting in a set of EMG 40DCs and an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp if this helps. Thanks in advance!

Yep, no open string buzz, just first and second fret. I've since set it up myself and got it better than it was but for some reason I still can't get it quite how I want. Ah well, I'll just keep fiddling till I get it close to how I want it Thanks for the help guys!

My bass teacher tells me the nut is actually a little high lol
-
The truss rod seems to be ok. I have a normal amount of relief (by normal I mean the same as my other basses have and how Ibanez recommend). I'll check the frets now...
-
HELP! If I set my main bass (Ibanez SR520) up to how Ibanez recommend it to be set up I get MASSIVE fret buzz on the first couple of frets. It's so bad that the note I play can barely be heard or will last a very short amount of time. Does anyone have any ideas why it's so bad? Even professional set-ups haven't sorted the problem out...
-
Ok thanks for all the advice guys! I've got a physio appointment booked soon anyway for a different problem so I'll mention this then and see what they think. And I really like the yoga idea, I'll be sure to try that! I'll probably adjust my strap height a bit too because I've always had it sort of low so that might be the start of my problems right there...
-
Thanks for the help I'll be sure to keep this in mind when practicing and performing. I might get myself a wider strap then... Does the material it's made out of make a big difference?

Hey guys. I'm new to this whole forum thing so I don't really know what I'm doing but here goes! Recently I've been finding that I've been having a lot of problems with my back, shoulders and neck even when I'm not playing my bass. I've only been playing about 3 years so I thought it was a bit strange that I was getting a lot of pain already? My theory is that it's because of the way I play and I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on my posture when playing? Thanks
