Has anyone else noticed how on the American Deluxe Jazz Basses the 'pan pot' is actually a 3 way selector switch? Currently I can choose between 100% Neck, 100% Bridge or both... No middle ground. Ideally I'd like to have two volumes like the Standard but keep the active/passive capabilities of the current pre amp. Anyone tackled this before? Any advice? This is a link to the American Deluxe Jazz Bass service manual. Scroll to page 4 for an image of the pre amp and its wiring. http://support.fender.com/service_diagrams/jazz_bass/019-4580A_SISD.pdf Any help is appreciated! Thanks Charlie.

Fender Ashtray and Neck pickup covers on a jazz bass
dakanoosh replied to dakanoosh's topic in General Discussion
I believe that the Jazz bridge pickup has some variation, Google "70s pickup spacing" or something for details. I'd imagine that the one closer to the bridge is better suited to having a cover. I love the look, and gig my chromed-up P with no issues at all
I'll have a search around, I'm using an American Deluxe Jazz and was more worried if the actual size of the bridge could be a factor. -
Fender Ashtray and Neck pickup covers on a jazz bass
I have a set, took the neck one off though, just kept getting in the way. Love the look of them
Yeah i can imagine them being a pain to play, don't know i guess I will have to try them out on a jazz with them already attached before I go and take a drill to my bass. -
Personally I love the look of a J or P bass with those big chrome covers on them, just wondering if they will fit on every Fender jazz bass, also what do people think about them and would they put them on their own Jazz bass! Image below if your not sure what I mean

Using Fingers on your Plucking Hand to Mute Bass Stings

My technique is fine then... as I don't have any ringing strings because I always have at least one finger on all the stings at anyone time... -
Using Fingers on your Plucking Hand to Mute Bass Stings
Why would I need to do that? My technique is clean and precise and I don't have any muting problems. I have put my time in and can mute lh or rh .. My point is the op needs to do the same. I am not convinced floating thumb is useful or any better than any other method but if you have ringing strings you really have to clean up your playing. I favour lh mute over plucking mute but the end goal is to best fast fluid and more importantly, precise. For those that can't do this, you are going to have to put the hard yards in. No quick fix.
you didn't say anything about muting in your original comment... I assumed you where completely discarding muting strings saying it was useless. -
Why would you need to do this. I think the time would be better spent cleaning up your technique elsewhere.
muting is so important, record yourself playing without trying to mute in anyway and listen to it back... what you will hear is all your stings ringing behind what your playing, now imagine if you where recording a song in the key of C# Major for example... your basically then playing a huge clashing chord behind every note you play... never overlook the importance of muting, perfecting it will make you a much better sounding bass player. -
Same here, I just had a play around on a 5 and I do all kinds of stuff and all instinctively I guess as I have never really tried to learn a technique for it.
I always did it instinctively too, I have only recently started actually look at techniques for muting, a student of mine asked me about muting so after search around you find theres as many techniques for muting as there is plucking! -
I've found that this technique is pretty essential on a 5-string. I could never get the hang of floating thumb myself.
just tried the floating thumb out on my 5... definitely feels a lot more 'correct' on it... -

ahh thats a cool way on muting! looks very tension free too! -
Hey All! What do you all think about using your 3rd and 4th finger on your plucking hand to mute individual strings (manly your 3rd finger on the A string and the 4th on D). I have personally just started experimenting with this and finding it very useful, however I am worried about adding tension to my hand. What do you all think? and can you think of any other bass players who have adopted this style?, only guys I'm aware of are Jaco and Victor Bailey. you should learn to use both in my opinion... it is never a bad thing to be good at lots of different styles of plucking! anyone who says real bass player don't use a pick direct them to the nearest video of Anthony Jackson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vti-ufVDXc -
Thanks Bert! I think Its always good to be open to all styles of music!
