Just thought I'd put up a plug for my band To-Mera's forthcoming support slot with rock legends Kings X. We'll be playing at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Wednesday January 21st and again at London's Electric Ballroom on Thursday Janurary 22nd. For more details, check out our myspace page: - http://www.myspace.com/tomeraband Also supporting are prog up-and-comers Haken. Should be a quality gig!

The bass in The Metro yesterday - Monday 5th Jan
geilerbass replied to MacDaddy's topic in Bass Guitars
Yeah I saw that. I was wondering exactly the same. Kind of looked alright! -
I love this sound. I have my action extremely low and no relief in my neck so that when I dig in I get a bit of 'clack'. My sound otherwise is quite smooth and a bit of clack really helps define the bottom end. Watch my 'demo' video on my websh*te (link in sig) for my interpretation of the sound. I don't like basses with higher action because I find them harder to play and I can't get that sound if I dig in, it just goes 'buh' Cheers! ped
Amen to that. I really don't understand this 'high action' nonsense. Playing a Vigier must really help with getting that absurdly low action that we all seek. I tried out what I think was a Passion III 5-string and the fretboard was insane. Just wish I had £2+ grand kicking around to buy one...

My GAS for a Status S2 Bolt-on continues into 2009. I need a new cab, but am not really gassing for anything in particular. Cabs don't excite me in the way that basses or Jessica Alba do.

Cheers dude - glad you like the music! I've only been in the band for about a year, so none of the recorded material is me (I joined just after the previous album was recorded). Hopefully, that should change as we are currently working on new material. I used to use a more death metal-style, 3-finger technique on some of the older Demagogue stuff, but we've mellowed out a bit more recently - and to be honest, I was never that great at it
-
I use it a little bit in a couple of songs - fast, double-time sections, that just cry out for a bit of 'clack'. But that's about it. It does sound pretty cool when used to contrast with a more subtle and mellow section, but none of the material that I play would work with it used more than in moderation.

I'm not familiar with Traben, but if you like the look of it, try and get to test one out. But I still recommend the Ibanez - the SR500 series are great instruments for the money, with a versatile range of sounds and amazing playability. I use Ibanez(s) in both my metal bands, so can vouch for their abilities in the heavier genres.

Dressed To Kill (KISS Tribute) - London/Cardiff THIS weekend!
geilerbass replied to cetera's topic in Gigs
Urrnnggghhhh... yet another tale of beered up thuggery ruining it for everyone... Still, the thought of the unlikely trio making a hasty exit does create an amusing image. Glad you got out alive (and with your outfit intact!) I think you also deserve Kiss props, for braving the full on outfit in a country that has yet to appreciate Kiss in the way that they do over the pond. If it'd been a US high school dance circa 1978, not only would you have been hailed as a hero, you would undoubtably have gotten laid. Several times. Can we turn this into the official 'Kiss Kuriosities' thread? -

That's an awesome tale! Nearly taking a biker-gang-beating, all in the name of Kiss merchandise. You definitely earned your Kiss Army membership with that... -
Dressed To Kill (KISS Tribute) - London/Cardiff THIS weekend!

There are loads of Kiss compilations out there, but as Cetera and Warwickhunt have said, the live albums give the best introduction to the band. I think Double Platinum is a fairly decent introduction to their early material as well, but most of what's on there is also on Alive I and II. Unpopular is it may be amongst Kiss die-hards, I'm also a fan of the 80s stuff - well, some of it . I was listening to Crazy Nights the other day and I still think that's a fantastic 80s rock album. In fact, Alive III was my introduction to the band - the version of Creatures of the Night on there is possibly my favourite Kiss track/version. On a similar note, I was going through my old music magazines last week and came across a live review in Kerrang! from 94/95 for none other than Dressed to Kill! There was a great shot of 'Gene' leering at the camera and I think it was from a venue in London (the Forum?). I'm also pretty sure that it said Peter Criss (the real Peter Criss) played a couple of songs with the band. Does that ring any bells, Mr Cetera? -
Don't give a t*ss for his beliefs the good thing is I've never known him use his celebrity to foist them onto anyone else. Not saying that he never has but I've not seen it reported.
That's exactly what I was trying to say - but you articulated it much better than me!

Haven't been able to watch the videos yet (I'm at work), but will check them out later. I've been a big Sheehan fan for many years and only found out about his Scientology beliefs earlier this year. In a strange way, that makes me respect him even more; I've been a big fan for years and yet the Scientology thing was news to me. Maybe I'm naive, but he must keep his music and religion pretty separate for me to have not cottoned on to that - and I think that's admirable.

That's a real beaut! I'd be keen to offer you some cash for it... ...if it had one more string and one less headstock. Statii always seem to be in demand, from what I've observed, so you should be able to get a reasonable price for it, considering the current climate.

What was the gear outcome of 2008 for you?
geilerbass replied to JimBobTTD's topic in General Discussion
Not much activity here... Basses - 1 in, 1 out FX - 1 in Amplification - no change Bass in - Ibanez SR20th 5 Bass out - Yamaha RBX JM2 FX in - Sansamp BDDI With the wosening economic situation, there's unlikely to be much change in 2009 either... boo... -
just found a pic on the trace porn thread. Pic of my head.
Well, it's actually MY head, but never mind... Seriously though, if it is one of these, then I can't praise it enough! Sounds amazing and I personally have no plans to get rid of mine. The 12-band makes it very versatile and it really punches through the rest of the band. Good luck with the sale...

Dressed To Kill (KISS Tribute) - London/Cardiff THIS weekend!

Damn! I've already got commitments this Friday. Shame, as Walthamstow ain't too far away from me. Have a great show! -
That does look pretty darn nice. Never really considered Dean basses in the past, but that looks pretty sharp. Sometimes, you've just got to go over budget - it'll seem worth it, once you've got it, as you know it's the bass you REALLY want. I did something very similar with this several months back. I went way over budget, but am so glad I bought it. Enjoy!

That's awesome...

Personally, I'd go for the 506, because I prefer the SR body shape and string spacing. Obviously you should try them both out and go for whichever one feels better. The BTB should have a tighter B string, due to the 35" scale, but will be more of a stretch (not a problem if you have big hands). That said, 17mm is still pretty tight for the spacing. The pickups may be the same, but I thought they had different pre-amps - though that may be the prestige range that I'm getting confused with. Either way, they're both quality instruments and great value for the money.

I highly recommend Brian Bond. He's based in Camden and does amp repair work for the Bass Gallery. He certainly knows what he's doing and managed to get rid of some annoying noise that my Trace Head was spitting out. If you're anywhere near Camden, there's also a fair chance that he'll pickup and deliver your amp to your house, as he did for me. He's also very reasonably priced and won't charge you if you he can't figure out the problem. His number is 020 7485 7065. Apologies if his details have already been posted, but he I felt he offered such a good service that I had been meaning to post my recommendation on here for a while...

Ah, Hamer - had to be really. RE the photo - Paul looks pretty different with his makeup off
-
Nice! I do love that Iceman shape - even better with the mirror finish! This is rather OT, but still in the theme of Kiss guitars - does anyone know what make/model of guitar Paul used on the Heavens on Fire video was? It was really pointy and had a holographic kind of effect. One of the most gloriously 80's looking guitars I've ever seen!

After a new 5 string, any recommendations?
geilerbass replied to Sarah5string's topic in Bass Guitars
You should be able to get an Ibanez SR505 in that price range. They're not metal in a BC Rich kind of way, but their sleek curves and playability definitely lend themselves to the heavier side of things. They also have a pretty warm and mellow tone, with a decent range of sounds. I'd also suggest trying a Yamaha RBX375 - again, not too over the top in looks, but still pretty rock. A bit more of a growl, soundwise, but still pretty versatile. -
I'm pretty sure he owns one each of all of Gene's signature basses.
