1. Jimmy Moon in Glasgow is the man for the job.
 2.
Last month I went to Nashville to do studio cuts for an old friend. I had a Ric 4003 with me. It didn't mix as well as i thought it was going to. I used a Fender American Deluxe Jazz they had in the studio. That made up my mind quick. After getting back to my local shops, a Fender American Deluxe Jazz followed me home. The Fenders are hard to beat.
You aren't alone - I would say that, from experience, it is much easier for a Fender to sit in the mix than your average Rickenbacker....and I do like Rick's.
 3. Agree with the previous posts - he has great musical energy and is a top improviser. Perhaps blighted by inconsistent material...but some real diamonds.
 4. I know from experience that 35" scale length doesn't really work for me ...I cant explain the whys and the wherefores, it just feels wrong and I cannot live with it. The only 35" bass that ever felt okay was a Lakland 5 string.
 5. Cant argue at all that they got it right..unquestionable. The statement that they cannot be beaten is however wholly subjective. That is a matter of personal preference based on taste and perception. All basses are merely variations of the same theme.
 6. Do not panic. A good luthier will often work wonders in this sort of repair...and it will be money well spent! As a furniture maker I would always AVOID using wood filler (nasty) unless absolutely necessary. The 1205 is a wonderful, natural finish bass...I love mine so feel your pain. Often a wet cloth and a hot iron can work wonders on the dents that aren't too bad. Good luck!
 7.
Yes, thanks, that one really helps. Sort of a bit of 'pwoup' about it.
Yes "pwoup" is a good description...my own personal analogy was that of a "rubbery" sound...dont ask me why!?!?!?
 8. This the sound of a Wal! http://youtu.be/WQgu0MpnKq8
 9.
Ok, now had a listen to almost all the suggestions, thanks all, particularly to Jigster for his own sound. I must admit, I'm still not quite getting it to be able to recognise the distinction. The Porcupine Tree sound is a very good bass sound, but could be one a number of basses. I've done a lot of JB listening in the past couple of days, I can definitely hear the Wal fretless as distinctive, but fretted? I'm just going through the Rush suggestions.
I personally think that one of the best examples of the Wal sound is Geddy Lee on Power windows (as previously stated) - especially "Big Money". My Wal just nailed that tone with aplomb! Wonderful, sublime sounding instruments...but they neck takes a bit of getting used to. I personally don't really think that Colin Edwin's sound with Porcupine Tree is the best example of the Wal tone...(love PT all the same though).
 10.
Just received: " Dear customer, We are delighted to inform you that the goods you've ordered have been shipped today. Details of your order: ====================== (cut cut cut.....) "
I bought my 1205 from Thomann - superb, professional service!!!
 11. I agree....you are under pricing yourself for the wedding gigs.
 12.
Worst basses I ever owned were 2 Rickenbacker 4001's & my custom built Jaydee Supernatural. The Rickenbackers were just shockingly badly made, uncomfortable & sounded like crap & the Jaydee had such an unstable neck that I spent more time adjusting the truss rod than I did actually playing it.
I loved my two Ricky 4001's - but funnily enough hated my Jaydee supernatural too...it developed an incurable back bow on the neck that would have made Robin Hood's bow blush. Never ever forgave Jaydee basses to this day.
 13. Many thanks for the advice! The Boss or the Radial look like the best option on my limited budget..will check them out.
 14. Yup, two out of the three bass manufacturers on your "don't go there" list would be top of my list of recommendations....Ibanez and Yamaha.
 15. Wow...love the look! Have never played a sandberg but have seen some in the flesh. They do an incredible relic job ....if thats your thang!
 16. I remember an old story where somebody was listening to Jaco practicing on that bass...once he finished the listener commented on how amazing the bass sounded, Jaco put it down and stepped away from it and asked "Really? Well how good does it sound now?". As good as Robert may be - he is no Jaco Pastorius...he was special. The bass is a bass.
 17.
Radial Bassbone? http://www.tonebone....sbone-using.htm
That looks interesting...thanks for the advice
 18. Apologies in advance if this question sounds stupid, or if it has been covered before - but I am a bit of a non-tech guy when it comes to gear! Not even sure if this is the right place to ask. Traditionally I have only used one instrument when playing live (with another similar model from the same manufacturer as a back up) - this makes sound checks nice and easy when setting up...however I have now decided to use two very different basses on a forthcoming gig. The problem is that one has a much hotter output than the other. I would like to switch between them both several times throughout the night. I know I could simply approximate by adjusting the "hot" basses pickup volumes - however is there an easier, more accurate way of regulating them both in the mix??? I would appreciate any advice out there. I plug through a couple of effect pedals into my TC Electronic amp - the signal is then sent via D.I. to our Mackie 1000watt PA. I really don't want to have to adjust the desk each time I swap over...but I'm guessing this is the correct answer?? Thanks in advance...and sorry for my stupidity. I usually like to keep thing simple dimple.
 19.
Loads of very good suggestions here. Speaking of jimmy Johnson (whitecloud) i have 100s of bass related cd's mainly funk, acid jazz, jazz, soul, n soul, rare groove, solo bass.etc i would like to offer one i feel VERY overlooked as bass players album prob not even looked at at all, and its one of my fave bass albums, i have it up there in the top 10 please check out jimmy johnson's playing one of wayne johnson,s album. The Wayne Johnson Trio. Grasshopper.( as well as others) here is a bit i found....Enjoy..
Tasty!
 20.
Of course our opinions are irrelevant. But no one advocating giving up the bass, or allowing a permanent lend etc has come up with a single reason why the legitimate owner of anything at all should do that... other than 'karma' Personally I would hope that if RT wanted to give it away he would auction it and give the money to Cancer Research or something. Surely that has a higher 'karmarific' value? It's all BS. He earned the money. He spent the money on something he wanted. Saying that he should give it away is taking even my own lefty leanings to insanity.
Your map of the world dictates that Karma is unimportant - mine is to the contrary. We are both right!
 21.
And why should he do that exactly? Do you let the previous owner of your basses have them in their possession until you want/need them? Try swapping the word "bass" for anything else you own and see if you want to 'compromise' your rights and possession with a previous owner just because it was 'dear' to them. When the last owner of your car comes round, I assume you'll be allowing him 'fair' access to use it?
We all have our own personal map of the world. It's up to him to do what he see's best. Our opinions on this subject are irrelevant.
 22.
60 grand's a lot of money to lose! Truckstop
Yes...to a normal member of the public - not a rock star.
 23.
It troubles me that Trujillo has kept the bass, knowing it belongs to Jaco's family, knowing that Jaco's sons play bass and knowing that they tried to fight so hard for its return. If he really wanted to help, he should have returned the bass to the family IMO. He would still be part of the story but the bass would be with the family, not in Metallica's collection locked away from the world.
I share the exact same feelings on the subject. Bad karma.
 24.
Hmmm, tell this to Roger Sadowsky, who built about 6000 basses until now and he's chambering the bodies to make it resonate better. There might have been other factors that made your heavy bass sound good......still a subjective matter though, I agree.
Yes, Rogers basses are superb lightweight instruments. No argument here! Funnily enough, despite usually avoiding any bass over 9lbs like the plague I recently acquired a Yamaha BB that weighs 10.5lbs - it has a wonderful unplugged tone and resonance! I suppose if an instrument is good....then it's good - heavy or not.
 25.
Thanks all for the advice, If i did sell i would buy something still in my dads memory. Does anyone know the going rate at the moment for a second hand MK standard?
I would guess around about the £3000 range used in the UK.
