http://basschat.co.uk/topic/296870-musicman-sterling-35/page__fromsearch__1 Do it 😄

There was a sterling ray35 for sale very recently for £450, if I hadn't just dropped the hammer on an sr5, I probably would have snapped his hand off. Be careful buying new for a "starter bass", if you fin it's not for you (and it isn't for everyone!!) you will burn a load of cash trying to unload it. That ray35 to me is a sure bet, you will get your money back if you decided to sell it on.

Nice effect though!!! As said above, it depends what effect you are after. If you just want to see the beams, then a hazer is definitely the way to go, you also don't get the big patches that the band can't see through that you have to wait to dissipate.

Not enough fog Les.... I don't wanna see yer pal in a vest 😄

That's interesting to hear active basses are pushing the pre a bit hard.... Is there anyone else having this issue? Anyone in the U.K. Using a stingray through the 400??? Their video of the all tube amp and stingray sounded great but it does have a different preamp.

Can't believe they played soul to squeeze!!!! It's my fave chili song that!!!
-
It's silver, and it it sounds great live 😄 The pink jazz is the fender flea bass based on his '61 jazz.

I have two SR5's now, and I find that with adjustment of the pre, finger position and level of attack, I can get a wide range of tones from mine. Especially as one has a single in the neck position, it is even more so versatile. It may not be able to cop a p bass tone completely but if it was a tone I wanted, I would buy a P bass. Go for something distinct, if you are considering it in the first place, it's obviously a tone you like. Also is the laky a 35" scale? While it's wasn't impossible to play a 35", I find a 34" much more comfortable, and prefer The 17.5mm string spacing to a 19mm on a 5er

Welcome to the music business. It's a shame to hear your story, and feel for you, but odds on this won't be your last sacking or disappointing moment in your career. I got "replaced" by the singer/guitarist old friend who had just moved back into town (or maybe he was just being polite) but after a year commitment being dropped by a text message was a bit harsh, but a sign of the times. It gets easier as time goes by, you will move on and let it go. Just make sure you defriend them on Facebook, I didn't and got to see the pics of them playing the Whisky in LA!!!! Such is life!!

Agree, The greatest shame is that his energy live doesn't transfer on his records. His playing is always impeccable, but seeing it live is a sight to behold!! Could you imagine playing with him 😄

Hey guys, a day late as I saw them on Wednesday, but just wanted to say how amazing they were live. I've been a fan since the early '90s and flea is one of the guys who made me want to play bass, so there was a lot riding on this gig for me, and they delivered!!! The thing I liked the most was all the little bridges between songs, I know they were probably rehearsed, but they did these little jam songs in between the songs so you never really new what was coming next. Flea didn't stop playing all night!!! Was ver surprised to see a golden oldie "nobody weird like me" played and thought the selection of songs was great, having said that, it wasn't the longest gig I've ever been to (the only slightly negative). For the gear nerds, flea spent the whole night (except the last song) on his "fenderRay" and it sounded much better than I thought it would. Not quite a stingray, but VERY close. I didn't really notice tone wise when he switched to a purple bass with an LA Lakers sticker on it which I assume was a modulus. Oddly, the shell pink jazz didn't make an appearance all night! Flea was just outstanding, and a pleasure to watch, although I have no idea how he bounces around like that while playing. Chad Smith is a drum GOD, I knew he could play, and have always loved his style, but Jesus he hits hard and plays with a huge amount of energy!!! Josh looks like he has settled into his role and played great (never seen Frusciante live, so no benchmark). Kiedis was great if not a little quiet. Well played boys! If you get the chance go and see them!!
I don't use GK cabs (although it was very seriously considered last week). It's only the head is GK (although that might change soon ) and I currently use a standard speakon with Ampeg and Barefaced cabs, although not at the same time - all very confusing!
Stay with GK, it's killer gear!!
-
I'm pretty sure if you are running a GK NEO can of a standard head you will need the 4 wire lead. I tried a standard 2 wire speakon into my neo from a markbass head and got nothing. After a brief panic attack, a 1/4 Jack lead solved the problem!

Everyone wants to go class D these days, and I get it to a certain level. In my opinion, unless you are running an ampeg svt all valve head, you should be able to manage your amp weight wise (think gallien Krueger rb, hartke kilo or heaven forbid a trace Elliott. Yes it is cool to carry your amp into a gig in a handbag, BUT in my experience, there is a certain extra something in a transformer power section as opposed to switch mode electronics. Again, just my experience. CABS is where you can really save your back, look for new cabs in either 4x10 or 2x12. My old rig was an rb1001, with a neo 212 and 115. Punch and headroom for days and more than happily kept up with a bloody loud drummer and 2 guitars

They are amazing, no other way to put it really. I've had two, a Euro lx 4 and a Korean made ns-2005. The euro I probably would have kept if it wasn't for gassing after a stingray 5 (ultimately my go to bass now). 5£3 build quality was amazing for the price I paid (about £700 second hand) and the sound was killer with the tone pump. One main reason I sold it was that to get the output to match that of my p bass for changing mid set, I had to use the trim pot, and that to my ears at least, took some of its edge away. Others would say it made it more playable, and for some genres I'd say they might be right. The build quality on the NS2005 was amazing for its price, but it was HEAVY!!! And the 35" scale was a stretch for my dainty little hands. Probably could have done with an upgrade to emg dc's to my ears. Buy with confidence, great basses and great after sales service too!!

Ask yourself, if you had gone into a shop and seen it on the rack and loved how it played/sounded, would you NOT buy it based on the grain? If the answer is yes, send it back, it's your legal right to do so under distance selling laws. If it plays great, what's it matter, you are bound to put some dings in over time that will make the grain seem irrelevant!

Sold Wizard P/J pickup set

I have also played a stingray 5 fretless... that was the only bass I ever regret putting back on the rack at the music shop!! It was to die for!
-
For me, stingray 5 wins hands down. Especially if you can get one with a HS pickup co fig like I just got yesterday. The necks a shallow so can manage with small hands like mine, and don't have to deal with a 19mm string spacing. For me it's the perfect compromise on a 4. Some would argue the 34" scale makes the B a touch floppy, but I don't find this to be the case. If you can find a transparent colour, they tend to be a little warmer when you tweak the pre just right or can go balls out slap machine. DO IT!!!!

I have the pleasure of starting this thread for Will. I just bought a stingray 5 from him and it couldn't have been any easier. Bass was just as described, and was very cooperative with waiting while i sorted out payment and collections Buy with confidence. Cheers Will!

My first bass amp was a Laney 150w head that I ran through an EV TL 15" cab.... What a bloody aweful setup that was.... was never happy with with it, was awe fully muddy, even with an active bass. Ended up part exchanging it for an acoustic guitar!!
