Hi all would love to hear your thoughts on this. I would really love a fernandes gravity 5 deluxe but are in short supply second hand, so started thinking about building something from bits myself. Thinking of a jazz bass v with emg/bartolini preamp but have done a quick search and it's not going to be cheap! Would like to hear your thoughts if you have done this yourself, and would you do it again or just by off the shelf??

Just had a look at the link to hmrc, and although i can get my mate to bring it back for me, it's probably not worth his hassle. If you can get a bass shipped and cleared duty/vat for about £100 it's not worth the agro. Atleast it would be covered by insurance the whole way! Unfortunately the bass is a neck through so breaking it down is out!
Would Rush or Deep Purple qualify?
Yes on both fronts. Personally I would find it hard to express metal/rock bass lines in terms of being "groovy" due to the guitars being so heavily riff driven. It doesn't leave a lot of room for bass players to be too expressive, but two of the best examples (besides Geddy already mentioned) would be Cliff Burton from Metallica and Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. Both of those guys are/were very good at fitting a lot in to a small space -
On the weekend I was away camping with my family and my sister in laws family (she is the worlds biggest fan of Duran Duran, and John Taylor in particular) and she was trying to convince me that JT was the greatest bass player who ever lived. Now me being a hard rock/metal kinda guy I never really got into pop music and was rather dubious about her claims, so she put on "rio" and lo, there it was, a down right groovy little bass line! I must admit it caught me off guard, and had to eat a little humble pie, but it got me thinking... Have you ever experienced this? What was YOUR surprise bass line tucked away in a song you would Never have looked at? I feel slightly emasculated by saying this.....but I'm off to learn a Duran Duran song now 😳

Really not bothered by buying brand new! And to be fair if I can get a 5er that comes in at any price but sounds and plays like I need it to I don't mind at all.

Thanks pete! Just find the finger board a little too wide on the fender style jazz. Really liking the idea of the modern look of the fernandes/warwick with an active emg jazz pickup set. Has anyone played the rob trujillo signature warwick? I know it's made in Korea so just wondered what the build quality is like vs a German made 'wick

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions, as much as I love stingrays, right now I'm looking for something else. One day ill treat myself to a 4 string, but right now I'm leaning more towards a warwick, any other thoughts?

Hey b'cers I'm starting to budget for my first 5 string and wondering if you could help me out. My first choice would be a fernandes gravity deluxe, but availabilty is a bit of an issue, and it's reaching the absolute edge of my budget. Second would be a warwick streamer, but really love a J/J pickup config which seem hard to come by in my price range. I would say probably around £800 mark would be my threshold but that would mean waiting 6 months to get it. I can say with confidence that fenders are out, I love my fender 4's but the string spacing on the 5 kills me, although the thickness is quite comfortable. Can anyone suggest some more options? Cheers guys!
Those are the colour combinations he played this eve - white/maple & sunburst/rosewood. Think both looked really good. Only thing that puts me off of them is if they`re as heavy as the original MD Sigs.
Oh yes, I forgot about that! You certainly know you have it on!
-
It doesn't look particularly "road worn" to me... If I am going to pay for that look I think they need to try a little harder. Sounds like they may have changed the pickup from the description which is a good thing, the previous model had a fairly low output. They have always had the forearm contour though. Road worn or not these are a cracking bass for the money, especially if you have big mitts cos the neck is mahoosive!

When we moved to the uk last year we bought our first iMac, after years of being a pc guy and building my own high spec gaming pc. At te the end of the day I agree no platform is perfect, I get the occasional glitch with the mac, but the biggest difference I have noticed is the 1. You have to pay for everything you want to download ie no freebies like with pc. The upshot is that as a general rule, everything works! I lost count of the number of times I tried to download something on pc to have it not work. I'd vote mac, but that's jus my 2 cents

I recently modded my mike dirnt signature and absolutely love it, so I understand where you are coming from. At the end of the day, it's YOUR bass and you need to be happy with it. If that means spraying it then go right ahead. Having said that, my bass was worth £400, so I would fancy I've not lost too much on the value if anything. Yours sounds like its worth considerably more, and that's the catch. I've seen a brand new top of the line range rover re sprayed in matte black, personally I think it looks good, but put it in a for sale lot along side the exact same model in factory finish and see what the resale is. You will no doubt create something pretty dang sweet, but chances are you will significantly reduce your potential market and therefore the value. There are countless threads and opinions on the sound/tone quality of acrylic vs nitro finishes so tread carefully or you may end up losing what you love so much about your go to bass. Also if you were planing to spray over the existing finish, your beloved sunburst might start peaking through! Personally I'd say sell reggie on, and buy something cheaper and mod that. I'm tipping there can't be anything too special on a fender that you couldn't re create on something else. Good luck!

Haha, don't you hate that! It's an interesting beast this bass, I know Rob trujillo from metallica loves them, he has tried to make 2 or three manufacturers copy it. When you compare what's on offer with the fernandes (approx £700 in te US) vs the warwick rob trujillo sig (approx £800) which is made in Korea vs Japan and is a bolt on neck vs neck through, it starts to look like good value. But compare it to the gravity 5x there is nearly £500 difference? Still would love to try one!

Has anyone had much experience with the fernandes gravity bass guitars? Especially the deluxe 5? They are really hard to get hold of, and even the uk distributor said they would have to one off order it from the US. I'm not in the market for one right now but would love to try one, it might just cure my GAS!

I put a set if dimarzio j123 pickups in my Mexican jazz, and swapped out the bridge for a gotoh 201 and changed the pots.... Results? Awesomeness!!! It's a completely different beast to ally now. I installed a SD quarter pounder p and j bridge pickup into my mike dirnt signature fender again awesome!!! So much more growly on the p and much more variety with the j bridge. It pays to do you homework before hand and have a realistic expectation for the results.

It's not exactly a classic, but I'd love to find a fernandes gravity 5 deluxe to try. The uk distributor doesn't even stock them! Anyone know of anyone who has one??

My matamp 610 sounds pretty awesome, but id be keen to see how this sort of setup worked out as I've considered adding either a 210 or 115 cab to it and run at 4 ohms

Hey all, I bought two effects loop pedals off Tom. great price, quick delivery, sound bloke. Cheers nessy.

Hi all, not sure about this one but has anyone tried to bring back gear from the USA while on holidays/business?? Have a friend who travels regularly to the states, and was wondering if he brought a bass back for me would he get smashed on tax? I have heard if people taking a cheap crappy guitar out and bringing back a high end bit of gear but not sure if anyone here has done it recently? Same applies to the smaller bits and pieces although I'm sure this would be more difficult to police. Cheers

Noel, sounds like you are the oracle of Aria! Thanks for the info, so I would be looking for a post 83 R60. Cheers!

I am pretty sure Cliff's was a passive one as I can recall reading he didn't like te active electronics. Thanks for the info though!

Hi all, wondering I there are any Aria Bass experts out there who might be able to help me out. I really like the aria pro ii black and gold as used by Cliff Burton, but they are hard to come by and far more pricey than other aria's of similar vintage. Can anyone explain to me the differences in models an if there is another model that is essentially the same bass in both look and sound to the B&G ? Colour doesn't matter. Cheers
