1.
Fully two thirds of the tweeter frequency range is above where it offers any benefit with bass....

The primary reason why tweeters are offered instead of midrange drivers is cost.
I may have said this before, but here goes.

A while back, I had a chance to play with a high end stereo crossover that I cascaded to make a single 96dB/Octave channel.

Playing with the crossover frequencies I determined that there's almost nothing coming out of your bass above 8kHz (slapping, snapping and popping with brand new strings), and very little useful output above 5-6 kHz.

Cabs with a top end of 22kHz is crazy, there's nothing up there but hiss.

If you have a good quality mid, like Alex's Big One or one of Greenboy's fEarful cabs use, you'll have all the useable top you'll ever need.

  2. It's an overdriven guitar going through a tremolo set to something close to a square wave pattern, with a more or less clean bass note behind it.

You could probably get away with using OD and trem on the bass, and playing high up the neck.

Don't worry too much about whether your version sounds exactly like the recording - make it your own. People will still know what it is.

Got it in one. If you turn the volume way down on the amp the buzzing may well go away. Generally amps like this are built with a generic speaker and no thought is given to the sounds they need to produce. If you compare your amp to a similar sized but better designed amp (a Peavey Microbass is a good starting point) you'll really hear the difference. It may be time for you to upgrade your amp.
Oh and what are the chances It's dodgy PUs? I'd doubt it highly but it's a possibility. I'm using a Warwick Rockbass Corvette, and I love it :) So I'd hate for it to be the problem.
Fairly unlikely. Rockbasses are pretty solid, well put together instruments on the whole.

    There's your problem.

I've yet to find any of these super cheap amps that's built properly. Most of them don't even bother putting the speaker in a seperate box to the electrical chassis.

Looks like she overdid it with the tooth whitening though :)

  6.
It's a bit Fugly IMO D=

I did look at this however

Great bass for the price. I'd avoid the black one though, coz they're impossible to keep clean. I speak from experience :)

  7.
I think it's a confidence thing, I was always bad with this but you've just got to sing like you mean it if you'll pardon the cliche. No pedal can replicate confidence successfully IMO.
Plus the one.

I started out not singing at all, then moved on to doing a bit of BVs. As my confidence grew I took lead on one song in the set. I now sing lead on all but 3 or 4 songs with my current band.

The other thing about backing vocals it that they're just that - backing. It doesn't matter if your voice is a bit iffy (as long as you're not actually out of tune) as your voice is only there to thicken up the sound of the lead singer.

  8.
OK Laurence thanks - I checked for resistance and there's nothing. That's the second blooming driver that's gone in this pair - not sure if it's the same actual one - could something be wrong with the crossover or have I just hammered them too much?

The speakers are pretty much redundant to be honest so guess it'll make a nice big paperweight!!

Now - what to do with the other driver? Are these speakers good for bass cabs?
Just checked it out in WinISD Col, and it seems the Kappa Pro is more suited to midbass operation. It will tune down to about 50Hz, but it'll need a mahoosive box to do it, and it won't handle much more than 100 Watts or so.

No real suggestions as to what you can do with them though - maybe you could give ebay a go if they're surplus to requirements?

  9.
Thanks. That makes a bit more sense now. That spreadsheet is pretty clear!

So - how does the 1818x work, presumably the 18" and 10" are connected in series, and would it offer any advantages compared to a straight 1818 cab? It is heavier, for sure!
IIRC, the 1818x has a built in crossover, so the lows go to the 18" and the highs go to the 10". It'll draw somewhere around the 180-200W mark from your amp by itself, and it'll probably be damn near as loud as your other two cabs on its own.

  10.
Count me in.

My equipment list is on my profile page - I'll bring anything that anyone expresses an interest in (so, I'll be travelling light then :) )

    S.P.
Bring the Sinsonido along - I've never seen a fretless one.

99% sure I'll be there. Probably won't bring a lot of stuff, just a bass or 2, Hartke HA7000, 2x10 cab and maybe my UB-1 + g****r amp.

  11.
so what do I get in comparison of the 350watts and 500watts then?????

the answer of 150watts isnt acceptable :)
Take a look at this post and have a listen to the WAV file there.

That's what a 26% increase in power sounds like.

    A

  12. Using my Hartke as an example, the amp will deliver 350W into 4 Ohms, or 240W into 8 Ohms. The 46% increase in power equates to an increase in SPL of 1.64dB (assuming that the 4 and 8 Ohm cabs have identical outputs at 1W/m).

In reality, any increase of less than 2dB is inaudible with a dynamic signal (ie. music), and in a band situation you'd probably be hard pushed to notice a change of less than 5dB.

This shows how little difference 1dB really makes with a test tone. With music it makes next to no difference.

  13. One of the hardware manufacturers (Wilkinson possibly?) used to do a kit for this very conversion. Consisted of a replacement bridge and nut, an extra machine head and (I think) a new string tree. Pickup shouldn't be a problem as there's a fair bit of crossover at the centre.
