DIY cabs

This started out as a bit of an experiment. Hearing some of you guys raving about BFM Omnis I thought i'd have a go at a spot of miniaturisation. So, going by pictures both here and on Bills own site, and adding a few ideas of my own, I designed this wee beast. The driver was originally the woofer from a set of JVC stereo speakers that I picked up for a couple of quid, and the tweeters are piezos from the same source. The woofer is 8", 8 Ohm, rated at 50 watts. The cab is mostly made of 9mm birch ply, which I salvaged from a crate that we received at work. The upper and lower horn flares are 3mm ply. I decided to go for a sealed cab rather than ported, partly because I didn't know how the woofer would react to being ported (the boxes they came out of were sealed), and partly because I have no idea what horn loading does to port calculations! The cab is mostly assembled using PVA woodglue and panel pins, and the whole thing is covered with black floor paint, applied with a sponge. Now the important bit - how does it sound? Well, a hell of a lot bigger than it has any right to!! I tried it out with the Crate powerblock (in the photos), and with the gain at around 11 o'clock and the master volume between 9 and 10 o'clock, it was easily as loud as my Peavey Microbass, and quite a bit bigger sounding. Winding the volume up caused the bottom end to get a bit muddy, but setting the Crates EQ flat helped. This thing would easily cut through at a semi acoustic jam, and would work well as a mini practice rig. Next project is going to be a Titan style folded horn built to the same footprint, using the other JVC woofer as a driver. I figure it'll be about 2/3 the size of a Titan 39 (about 26" tall and 13" square). I'm planning on using the Crate to drive both cabs, using my Rolls SX21 crossover in the FX loop to make a biamped mini rig. I'll post some pics as I go (I plan to get some photos of the build process this time!) Andy
3. And again. Anybody interested?
4.
Don't think it was. More likely to have been Samuel Gooden. Hamster
Gooden was the bass singer with the Impressions, who Mayfield split with in 1969/1970 Bass on a lot of CMs early material was played by Joseph 'Lucky' Scott, but I haven't been able to confirm that he played on Move on Up. 5. Sounds like an over-tight rod to me. Slacken it off by half a turn or so (that's anti clockwise BTW ), and return the strings to pitch (assuming you had to loosen them to get at the rod). It'll settle down over the next day or so. If it still needs more, loosen by a quarter-turn at a time, retuning afterwards, and give it a few hours to settle before adjusting again. Don't worry about breaking anything - you've got to be a real spanner to bugger up a neck (like putting half a dozen turns onto the rod in one go). Andy

Power AC 10V

9V should be fine. There will be rectification and (probably) regulation inside the unit, so 10V should be more than is actually required. The circuits inside probably only need 5V DC anyway - there's not a lot of kit that actually runs directly from AC - off hand I can't think of any, but I daresay there is something somewhere. Just make sure the transformer you use can supply enough current for the rack, or you could end up in all kinds of strife. Andy
7. Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla Granted it's only little, but it's there. Andy
8.
Try the EMG line of bass pre-amps, they come in a variety of flavours depending on the pots that you have on your bass. Fitted one in my previously passive Warwick.. works nicely. Richard
Just bought one of these off our own King Tut. It's going in a Peavey NTB6, I'll let you know how it works out. Andy
9. Dunno about skid rails, but screwfix do stainless steel kickplates for doors that might do you. http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.js...10&ts=44930 Or you could try looking in the phone book for metal fabricators in your area, they might be able to come up with something. I've got a couple near me and they're both pretty good at delivering the goods, even when I go in with only a vague idea of what I need. Andy
10. Bought an FX unit from me - no messing about, a pleasure to do business with. Andy

Friday the 13th

Debut gig for my new 3-piece, PsychoMojo. The Cuba, New Bradwell, Milton Keynes. Free entry, we'll be on 9-11. Come one, come all, and fill that hall Andy
12.
Japan - Adolescent Sex and Obscure Alternatives (these are the first two Japan albums), bass player Mick Karn,
And the best two, for my money. Mine would probably be The Pursuit of Happiness - Johnny Sinclair (nothing special basswise, just really well written songs with intelligent lyrics) Morphine - the late Mark Sandman. Two strings and a slide, and one of the most amazing sounds ever. Andy
13.
Why are you called Hamster?
Give him a hamster and he'll show you. The hamster will never be the same again though Andy
14. Some US products can be converted to run on 230V. With some it's as easy as flicking a switch, others need to have their internal transformers retapped, or have the transformer replaced with a UK equivalent. External transformers - Make sure you get one with enough current capacity. If you need 50 watts, then you should be looking for a transformer rated at 60 - 70 VA or so. You can use a tranny with a higher VA rating than the equipments Wattage rating, but never lower. Upsides - Lets you buy some very cheap kit from abroad. You don't need to modify anything. Downsides - Most transformers are sold without boxes, so you'd need to do something to keep fingers out of the terminals. Cost - Transformers aren't cheap, especially when you get up to more than 50VA or so. Weight - Big trannys are heavy. Anything in particular you're looking at? Andy
15. Bump.
16.
Digital Village in Cambridge leant me a pair of monitor speakers for a weekend from their display as I needed some urgently but wanted to buy a set from them that they didn't have in stock. So, ultimately they helped me out because of my bad planning, no other reason, as they still got the sale. Good people
+1. They've never been anything less than helpful, and have at times bent over backwards to assist. Andy
17. +1 for the Van Damme - Great quality without costing an arm & a leg. I've always been dubious about solderless connections, as a bit of oxidation between the contacts can turn into an insulator. Stick with Switchcraft, Neutrik, Cliff etc. and you'll not go far wrong Andy
18.
If you use a diasy chain is MIGHT short it. My old Mutron did this when I tried to use two batt clips. I think that it is because essentially you join up the grounds.
It's not joining up the grounds that's the problem. By connecting this way, you're linking the +ve and -ve together, which equals unhappy power supply. If you have one of the supplies that has isolated outputs you might be able to do this, provided the outputs are floating (ie. truly isolated with no connection to each other at all), but you must connect each connector to a separate output. I built Higgie a power converter for his Mu-tron to allow it to run on a single 9V (Boss style) input. We're currently working through some noise issues, but if this gets sorted then I may be in a position to start making these generally available. Andy
19. Kev, what pub's that? Looks very familiar Andy
20. As the title says, this is a Peavey Microbass practice amp. It's the earlier version with the cloth grille rather than the metal. 20 watts, 8" speaker, surprisingly good sound for a small amp. There are a couple of (very) minor scuffs on it, but otherwise it's pretty much as it left the factory. Photos - I'm asking £40 for the amp. I will post to the UK at cost, or you can collect from Milton Keynes, or I'll even deliver within a reasonable distance. Thanks for looking Andy
21.
Now there's a question to ask.
Ahh, but you don't know what I know I built a 9V to +9/0/-9V adaptor to go in it, so it'll run off a standard Boss type supply. Andy
22. I use a BF-3, and it's pretty good. I use the guitar input, rather than the bass, because I prefer the sound. The tap tempo function is pretty cool too. Andy

Bi-amping

If you want a mono crossover, you could do a lot worse than the Rolls SX21 http://www.smartsounddirect.com/content/Pr...oductID=SSD1137 Small, sounds good, and well built. Andy

A link to the seller would be useful... Andy
25. Try going over the heads of the UK guys, get in touch with Eminence in the US. That's what I had to do when I wanted to get some B102s (which they have now started to import) They were more than happy to stick 'em on the next shipment, and put my name on them. Bottom line is, they want the sales, so if Eminence UK are dragging their feet, bypass them. Andy
