2. I've found a chipper sound using a Bass Xciter for the bass & treble EQ and a nice frown on the ABM to boost the mids, leaving the bass & treble on the amp well alone. Add some valve drive and bosh, the jobs a good-un. I'll let e knaa when I'm next down Pompey Ben, come and have a listen...
 3. Just done me first gig with DR Lo Riders (been on a week or 2 with just home practice) - fantastic sound and all the other things DR say. Except they are now dead as a dodo. Got 'em for £18 from the US ebay (though I waited a month for them), but doubt I'll use 'em again. I do sweat like a bastard on stage, but one gig? They were cleaned after like I normally do and every other make of string I've used gets a few gigs out of them. I'll email DR to see if they were duffers, but until then, it's back to the cheapies!
 4. Firm handshake, eye contact & don't swear. Unless it's for a punk band, then do what Galilee said. And swear. EDIT: Good luck.
 5.
...prefer not to go to Reading, its only just in the South East
And sefishly, the furthest away Any date though...
 6. Water & vinegar with a microfibre cloth. Don't f***ing blame me if it all goes wrong though.
 7.
Rehearse until you're sick of it. Then rehearse some more again. Perhaps a bit more after that. Everything else said in this thread is good too, obviously.
The best piece of advice here!
take a book. there can be a lot of sitting around, which can get frustrating. have fun !
Except this! Enjoy it mate.
 8. Havant Arts Centre - excellent gig, a few old faces turned up and we played better than we have for years. Having a cracking soundman (our ex-drummer, no really!) who knows his PA, having it all just-so on stage and sticking religiously to the '2-pint rule' helped enourmously. I'd forgotten just how good the bass sounds and feels when you're standing in front of a decent bass rig at volume. That Bass Xciter really works with my ABM...
 9.
...i just felt like it was worth buying and seeing if i could do it
It will be if you can sort it Kev - I did me first gig with mine last night (cheers Dan) and it hit the spot nicely.
 10. Any news Mr Nik sir? And ta for taking charge!
 11. How was the gig? DI or not? More importantly, WTF is Fudge on about?
 12.
I have thought about recruiting another guitarist but we've not got that far yet.
You can have mine John, he's a bit of a c*** mind
 13.
That black one is lovely, innit. You'd be lucky to find a black bridge for it though - though the early (i.e. 83 ish) were black. For those who don't realise, the ASAT has exactly the same electronics and pickups as the L2000, so it's just the body shape that is different. More ASAT porn Rare 5 stringer: I'm sure I saw the bass player with Cat Stevens playing a sparkly ASAT 5er when he did that BBC session a little while ago. Sparkly Speechless
Is the neck more of a Jazz than the L-2000's? Oh, stop it, stop it, stop it! Wish I'd never asked now Thing is, I've never even thought the Tele body looked any good 'till I saw these.
 14. Saw them on the first tour & he had a monster rack & a couple of 4x10's IIRC. f*** kows what make though.
 15.
re SansAmps and mids: I keep meaning to try one, but I did find it interesting that Geddy Lee switched from the RBI (rack bass SansAmp) to the RPM (with parametric mid). I didn't think his RBI sound was all that great when I saw Rush in 2004.
Way to go Ged, the ParaDriver (pedal style RPM) has a much more flexible sound than the Bass Driver. Having recently tried a MicroBass II however, I might just flog everything and get one. Then I might stop going on about it.
 16.
If you're new to this I would advise you initially go along with what the soundman suggests while asking him about how it works and learning what he's doing. Then as you do it more you can then make useful suggestions and occasionally try things out in an informed way. As experience comes you'll get to know what works and what doesn't.
You the man.
 17. Farkin genius mate, well done. Taking orders yet?
 18. Just to play devil's advocaat (hic)
Good Thread! I'd agree that tuners are tuners as long as they hold the string at the desired pitch without slipping. The only other attribute one might wish for is light weight to counteract neck dive.
Or heavy to give more mass to the neck - think Geddy Lee Jazz
If someone makes an item as a retro fit add-on or upgrade to a bass, it probably makes some sort of difference to the tone
Or they think it does - can't think of one without offending someone though
 19.
Hi, it's likely that he simply wanted to have a really good clean signal from the bass. By running it before the amp with a good DI box he can be sure to get a good signal even if your amp should break down (as they sometimes do). Also, some bass players insists of running the DI post EQ on the amp and that makes the engineers job much more difficult especially if the bassists keep fiddling on the EQ all night...I do it all the time to make sure I can hear myself properly when the guitarists starts to crank up thier amps as the night goes by....
Just spoken to me soundman mucker and pretty much said this too. He tends to use my SansAmp uneffected as a straight DI for the other bands on the bill when we play his venue though 'cos it gives a good strong signal.
 20.
Played with numerous bands, some you will have heard of (if you're old enough) and some you possibly/probably haven't.
Welcome. And what bands might they be, sir?
 21.
I tend to rest my thumb on the end of the neck...
Geezer!
 22.
We play in C, I take the bottom 4 of a 5er set and tune them UP half a step! Quite comfy and it gives a thight and good tone too!
Surely not on the Geddy Lee, the neck would snap! Mine nearly did with .110's on it!
 23.
I used to hate gigs where you're not getting any rapturous feedback from an audience ... but now I don't mind them.
Me neither. Good job really, we're sh*te! After 20 years we really should be better. Havant Arts Centre this Thursday though - big stage, big PA, sh*t-hot soundman, new pedalboard to play with, not the last band on so a chance to get mullered at the very least...
 24.
That is quite simple stunning. Are the pickups tapable because I hate humbuckers?
Nearly - series/parallel switched.
 25. That's the fella, thanks chaps. Off to do a bank job. Edit: f*** me, look at this. What's wrong with it?
