1.
Er ... I don't think many solos are unprepared, "random or unrehearsed", even if that just means the player has played a solo in that space in the tune 20 times before with the same band. If you are thrown a surprise solo on stage by a bandleader, or circumstances, then you still fall back on the chords, arpeggios, melody and scales that fit the tune... And if you know it's a good idea to have some shape to a solo, a start, middle and end, then that will influence what you play. So the actual note choice and sequence may differ from solo to solo but the components will come from the same practice and preparation.
Yes, I agree.....a formula, even if it varies from the last time it was played. In an accompanied solo, yes! Unaccompanied, random and unrehearsed is something I think works well.
2. Shadows and Light for me is a bit difficult to watch, too many edits of wolves and nonsense! The playing is great though!
3. Jeff Berlin uses a normal Dean....doesn't he? What about Geddy? or Tony Franklin, anyone know?
4. Old Jeff swears by them : Jeff swearing and Mr Sheehan is into them too!
5. Tidy!
6. Great version of Purple Rain!

My bands Ep

Thanks for listening guys! and thanks for the kind words too Bilbo: I remember The Four Bars, I never got the chance to play there in it's glory days, t'was the gig to go to! We may have weirdly crossed paths Alun: I wish we could perform it live but there is actually only two of us... my other 'alf is the talented Darren Charles, guitars, vocals and piano. so we're sort of two members short really. Thanks again guys for your ears...you've made my night!
8. Nice one Jarrod...the boys mentioned it last night...tidy darts!
9.
Exactly. Dueling jazz bassists make me go 'ugh, stop it'.
I'm ok with jazzers doing their thing together, in fact I'm ok with solo stuff, love it....I just didn't think either player would want to be on the same stage although I reckon Jeff is always up for a duel!
10.
No, because I can set the EQ going out of the DI
Rather you than me....I'm just no good with Eq- ing my bass sound live, plug in and play for me these days.
11.
Whats the fan noise like - it looks like there are two of the little blighters in that there empty cavenous resonant box after all! Very interested in one of these for my youngster now. alexclaber, how would this pair up with your cabs do you think?
It's quiet, I've not noticed anything worth talking about.
12.
We should do a Jeff berlin VS Percy Jones thread...but there'd be no contest!
They're both worlds apart really, both great players, I'd sooner buy a Percy Jones album than a Jeff Berlin album though. At the same time I'd love to see both of them live (not together)
13. Band intros....HAS to be one of the most ugliest things ever, thankfully the evil intro has only ever happened to me a few times, ban it I reckon.
14.
read my sig....
Gives me wood, does that.
15. I earn some of my crust from playing, I earn some more crust from a part time brainless job, I would love to play 7 nights a week and earn all my crustiness. I make bugger all from original projects nor do I expect to, I can't teach, if there is such a thing as a session "scene" or "circle" I've no idea where it is...... I have considerable debt due to original projects. This has been my situation for many, many years. This isn't a "woe is me" or bitter post, just thought I'd post a bit about my situation.
16. I'm actually getting right into them.....think I need one! this one: I want this one...how much are they?

18.
Well, that was an intersting discussion - thanks for all the replies. I plumped for the Peavey. It arrived last night - a quick go reveals - well, its a bass head! A good range of sounds, and even something pretty close to the TE pre-shape sound that normally I use. Got to say that the sub harmonic generator function is crap! They even say in their user manual that bass is a complex waveform ..blah blah blah.......so in other words preparing you for the fact that it does not work well! It did not track the played note at all well - sounded great when it was in tune (1 octave lower), but it just kept jumping to different notes (presumably picking up on the "complex waveform" and choosing to track a different frequency!). But its just a gimmick, and I had no plans on using it really (unless it worked exceptionally well and gave a fantastic effect), so I won't loose any sleep over it. I'm looking forward to giving the 450 a work out with the band though!
Don't forget pics of your new baby
19.
Shitting bricks, its dead weird playing for 30 mins....what am I going to do for the rest of the night?? Pack up and f*** off I suppose!
Bask in the glory or f*** off like you said Tidy darts....hope it goes well for you.
20. Glad to hear something come up Ross. Good luck!
21. Talking of Percy I haven't a clue what it is but I'd like a Wal, there is something about them.
22.
I use fast fret and get very long string life, despite being very hard on my basses and grinding frets down fast. I'm not entirely convinced that it's not the fact that I'm wiping the sweat/crud off the strings regularly rather than the lubing qualities of fast fret itself. I know our new guitarist doesn't rate it but it works for me for whatever reason.
Works ok for me too. Seems to sustain some life in the strings, more so if you've got a wet fresh one but for me it's mainly to get rid of that awful sticky drag you get, rather than sustaining the strings life.
23. Have a read up on Billy Sheehan, he's got it sussed when using distortion.....don't quote me but I think he actually considers himself a distortion expert
24.
And I take an interest into what my bass sounds like out front one way or another! Si
That'll explain why my gigs are empty
25. Bass DI'd is naff anyway! Doesn't it go something like this....DI your bass and let the sound guy worry about it?
