6.
just the tone i think, wood ressonating and all that sh*t.... bollox really, i dont personally believe the fretboard has the slightest effect on tone, and id like to challenge anybody who has good enough hearing to tell the difference between the two
I reckon there is a difference, maple being harder and brighter sounding. I've used two maples in the past P and J .....to my ears maple always sounds harsher, more zing perhaps, snappier. At the end of the day, it's what matters to the player, don't mind either myself
  7. Ello, Just wondered if anyone uses one of these heads. I 've been using this regularly for the last few months and last week noticed a drop in the signal...as if someone turned me down by half, then it comes back in.......Or, as I'm about to start playing, switch it on and....nothing, not a sound, all of a sudden comes straight back in. The other thing I've noticed is the clip light flickers at a reasonably low volume. I've checked all other possibilities like leads, bass, fx and mains and can't put my finger on the problem. The amp is used with an 8x10 4ohm cab. Any suggestions would be great cheers Jase.
  8. Johnsons sound is brilliant, I love it....I think Frissel had Gibson gremlins....didn't do it for me. Was he reading his solo? Scofield is alway good to watch, I'm not a huge fan of his, I just like the way he solos. Yeah, the Clarke vid is a bit....showboat? It's entertaining and in fairness to old Stan, he mentions in the vid he does look for that element...can't help thinking that his thumb must be sore when he's hitting the bass at around 1.40 in the clip

Great player , Geezer.
The ol' Geezers gone a bit posh aint he!!
  10.
They do suck a bit, don't they? I understand Mike Stern (guitarist) has the worst gear possible but makes it sound fantastic.
Mike Stern, great player!!!! did you see his Instructional vid? not much in the way of gear at all but as you say fantastic
  11. What does Geezer use these days? I prefer him with a Ric.
  12. Not known so much for his bass playing but has a jazz that looks like its had a real hard life.......Bireli Lagrene.
  13.
Just going by what I see on that video, any good bassist will be able to play on basses of any action but some of the the highly technical stuff is certainly only possible on a bass with low action. I'd like to see Stanley Clarke do any of his double bass heroics on a bass with a regular setup.
Sorry to hijack bilbo........can't deny it though Oscar, whatever set up it's damn fine! 14. Three cheers for Basschat.......hip hip!
  15. Thanks bilbo
  16. Tell you who's always got something good going and great to listen to...... maybe ask a bit of advice, Alan Vaughan, Mike Flynn has got some vids in the recording section....I'm not suggesting do the stuff they do but it might spark some ideas
  17. Our singer uses something called a Tbone??? Think that's the name, not 100% but reckons they're reliable and very cheap.
  18.
Loud = deaf soon? I know that reads a bit like stuff your parents might say but you apprciate these things far more when you have lost them and then it is too late. Perhaps its my age but getting home from gigs with ear damage is even less appealing than it was 15 years ago, and I didn't think it was a great idea back then either. Drumers are often the culprits in bands playing too loud and the rest of us are to often willing accomplices. I have a rig which can do loud and occasionally when it is ticking over it is a bit too controlled, but at least I can still hear it. I must ask our drummer if he has thought more about a compact kit.
Agreed, loud is bad. Even if I think it's an acceptable volume I use protection, there's nothing worse than coming home from a gig with ringing ears.
  19. You'll be safe with the Geddy, no cavities under the pick guard, newer USA models do have the open routing thing which is unfortunate.
  20.
What is the nicest jazz bass you've ever played? And why? I am asking because I really love the jazz bass sound but I can't find the right instrument for me! There's always something missing. Since now I've owned one Mexican, one 65' Japanese Reissue, one 62' Japanese Reissue and one custom made from various parts(US body, status graphite neck and antiquity pickups). Share your experiences, please!
I have two USA J's and one 62 Jap reissue J, for me it's the USA,.... love to play the 62 Reissue but it's the USA's I prefer to use for live, practice and recording....The other Jazz I really enjoyed was the Geddy, I loved the sound of it too, nice and snarly but the ultra slim profile started to give me stick so I went back to the standard profile.
  21.
me too! change the pup for a dimarzio model one!
Yeah, too right
  22. I'd love to have that.......£1,900
  23. Gorgeous bass

    my band

    Great bass sound!
  25.
My previous band was reasonably heavy 'classic' metal. I think I preferred the music to listen to rather than to play - it was a lot of boring root noting against 2 loud guitarists. My latest band is seriously funky with a bit of rock thrown in, much more fun.
I have that situation at the moment, probably prefer to listen to the covers rather than play them, two guitars, not much room to move around with bass playing but the rest of the band are good guys, they're reliable, regular work too. But I would rather be out playing live than sitting at home complaining I have no gigs, keeps you on your toes no matter what you're playing
