With all the repair work done while he was using it and after he'd lost it, there's probably not much 62 left in it

Well, well, well http://www.bassplayer.com/article/jacos-19...er/mar-08/34267

Hi Vincent, It's hit and miss with Fender basses, best to try as many as you can, I'd agree with paul, the newer models are very good though. I have two USA Jazz, one is 2004 S1 switching and the other is a little earlier without the S1 switch, totally reliable and comfortable to play, I wouldn't be without them. Fender Japan are also very good. I haven't been lucky enough to come across an early Jazz, I used to have a 76 or 78...P bass (so I was told when I bought it, I'll never know but it was old...ish ) that was a tidy bass to play too.

Ello, Still got Gas, so It's back up for sale, price dropped to £450 Delivered or wouldn't mind doing a straight swap for a USA fretted Jazz (rosewood), not bothered about wear and tear. The Fretless is in Ex condition, direct from Ishibashi with relevant paperwork, also in a hard case, a clip lock strap (not fitted) Fender cloth and Fender Thumb rest still in packaging. The Fender Gig Bag will also be with it. I changed the volume knobs for the USA Jazz black skirted type, the original ones will be included too. The Pick guard has been sold on. US pickups, Spiral Bridge and Reverse Tuners. Cheers Jase.
I am about to start a campaign that seeks to ensure that Fender 'Jazz' Basses, of all hues, are only ever used to play 'Jazz' and that any use of said basses for idioms other than Jazz should result in the removal of that instrument from the perpetrator and it sale, at a reduced rate, to responsible jazz musicians in order to gain funds for the Musicians Benevolent Fund. I would also insist that 'Precision' basses should be played with precision and that all Double Basses should be played twice.
So, can I have your Wal bass when you start your Jazz gigs with my Fender Jazz ?
Cheers guys, some helpful replies (and some "just get on with it" ones!) It's going OK really. I'm simplifying where the bass part isn't prominant, and writing crib sheets to help me out. I don't think I'll get them perfect, but as long as I can get through, sound tight, and enjoy it then i'll be happy.
Nah, you're not mad, it's good to be that busy learning songs for a covers band, I don't think covers need to be note perfect at all, stick to the drummer like glue and you'll fly it. Good luck hope you enjoy it

Fender Strats for me, can't play guitar at all but would love to own a genuine vintage.
Bill Wyman claims he was the first fretless player (or one of the first). And the word is that he played fretless on a lot of the Stones records.
Percy Jones was one of the first too I think.
TBH, I couldn't play a fretless accurately without a lined fretboard... Of course I'd love to not need them, but I've been playing bass for three years. Not long enough for me to have learned my way around the 'board accurately. If having lines means someone has the confidence to record and/or gig with it, I'd say:- Just do it
Yep, well put lines all the way I reckon
-
Hi Stu, Thanks for that, I really enjoyed it How long did it take to work out?
If I went fretless I'd have to start with a LINED fretboard.
Too right, nothing wrong with using lines at all. It can be set up (intonation) to suit your fretting hand, the notes aren't directly on the lines all the way up the neck, I find them more of a guide, you still have to listen to your playing / intonation even with lines.
Ok. Ive never even played a fretless but a lot of people seem to have them. I know what they sound like but im wondering if anyone uses one in a covers band. i would like to get one as ive always liked the sound of them but im not sure if i would use it live other than for a few slow songs (or some Gary numan, 80's stuff). Any thoughts? Im not after advice on what to get, just how useful having one could be.
Go for it! Fretless can be used in any band situation plus they're highly addictive

I think if you're part of an all day gig or Bank holiday bash then bands need to realise there's generally no time to fanny around, there are others to consider, everybody has to do their bit in order for the whole gig to run as smoothly as possible, it's so annoying when some bands turn up late because they "need" to have their own backline, or a drummer kicks up a fuss because he doesn't want to use the kit provided, they're a complete pain in the butt. It's swings and roundabouts, sometimes it's good backline with a great kit other times it's rough as hell but who cares? punters are there for a good time and don't need to watch a few idiots milling around and wasting time....turn up on time, play the time you've been given and if they don't cut them short and forget about them for the next Bank Holiday.

Pro Steels 50-105 for fretted, Hartke 45-105 for fretless. Used to be Roto 45-105 but as much as I love them they don't last long at all.
-
Prog is back! Prog is the way...prog pop is the next big thing with crazy muso bass players!
-
Ahh, good stuff, Righto! I'll keep me ears peeled.

Made to order so the description says.

Have a go at emailing Fender, I did it once to find out when they started open routing under pick guards, they were very helpful.
I used to think I loved 'rock' music, but when I was between bands a couple of years back, I came to the conclusion it was a meaningless word. It didn't take long before I stopped answering ads from bands looking for a bassist for a 'rock' band. To some people 'rock' means 'Iron Maiden', to others it means 'U2' and 'Travis'.
Yep I agree it's like the term Jazz, Rock is just as huge a genre.
I hope to be bringing BassChat some truly awesome news soon ;o) Bare with me! - On the subject though.. Yes I realise that the stuff I am into and love playing is a bit more niche than the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs (ref above). I certainly miss hearing about players who are pushing the envelope a bit.. and I don't necessarily mean being the fastest and having the most strings. I get quite excited about seeing well executed and totally mind boggling playing! The guys from my band have me laughing out loud with their craziness!
So no sounds on the site yet dood? Looking forward to hearing some new prog stuff
