Ah! Derrr I didn't think of adding the numbers together That makes sence now. So did the 14K for S+H also include the import duty and VAT?
PM
Jase what was the final cost of yours, over and above the price of the bass? Looking through the U-box hase stirred the odd pocket of GAS ...
All together with shipping and insurance 82,000 yen 68 for the bass and 14 for shipping/insurance. At the time the exchange was £380. Believe it or not, if I had ordered it the week or so before the rate was even lower less than £350...still all is good I had a good service, good price and a good bass. Just to clarify it was new not U Box, so cheaper again for U Box I imagine.
Has anyone bought a used bass from Ishibasi?
Think I read a few days ago that Ped had some bargains from Ishibashi U Box.
No, Bravewood have stopped doing restorations. This one is overpriced, it should be half that figure for what it is. You can pick up a 64/65 in the US for about $4000 get it shipped, pay the duty and you'd still have enough money for a few pints and a curry.
Thought it was overpriced but $4000 is still insane, I can't get over the price on vintage Fender, how do you justify that? how can you be sure it's genuine?....the mind boggles.....I'd still love to have one though
FEG seems to only have used ones ... GE seem to be unaffected (according to their .. hummm, somewhat challenging website) It bugs me that corperations can do that. Like Sam Ash and other US stores not being allowed to ship to the UK
Yep, it's a right pain....The Big F has spoken!!
I have a USA Std Jazz of 2005 vintage - bootiful, and not dead expensive second hand.
Nope, should pick one up well under £600.
Hi Jase, well even tho i have been playing bass for 9 years i have tried any out apart from crappy old one. So my views may change as i try them out, but through searching endless reviews i am veering towards a Fender Jazz Bass, or even the squire now.
Ahhh! Fender, you could buy one of those cold with out problems CIJ or MIA

Me too, I'm in the sweaty gang I can kill Roto's pretty quick so I use some fast fret before and after, also find that D'addario Pro steels seem to handle sweat pretty well.
Well i play in a rock/pop/soul/funk cover band and we have a few weddings booked and i need a new bass really. I am after a passive 4 string bass which isn't too heavy on the shoulders. I will spend upto £600 if i find the right one for me, thing is i know buying online is good but i do know that trying them out first is imperitive.
If your going to spend £600 you won't go far wrong without trying it out first, there would be plenty of guys here to give approx weights on different basses too....on the other hand stick around in the for sale section lots of trusted people selling here and always honest about the goods too. Any particular brand you really fancy?

Don't think the neck was even taken off to strip the original colour, looks a bit like Mr Sheehan's old P bass finish. At least it's just stickers. Does John at Bravewood still take on vintage restoration?
Shame. Did you get yours?
Yes I did, a 62 Jazz fretless vintage white( needs to be given to Dave for an epoxy job ) and Ishibashi provided a great service Just made it in time I think, about a week after it arrived people started talking about the end of non exports. Just wondering if Guitar Emporium and Far East Guitars will be affected????
-
Seems to be the case, shame because they're decent basses for the price. They had instructions from Fender Japan to stop so I heard.
I have got to the off to the shops bit, the only thing is the town i live in shall we say isn't blessed with music shops especially when it comes to basses. Of what music shops we do have the bass part reduces in size by the second, and what they do have are all copy models maybe with one Fender Jazz which is their prized possession. So it means a drive to Birmingham which by the time i get there i will feel obliged to buy something to make me feel the journey was worthwhile. So i have many factors which affect my decision process. P.S. I am hard work.
Right, can we have a quick re cap? What do you need in a bass?, how much do you want to spend? There's a lot of online shops that have good prices too

Do the right thing neptunehealer......SELL YOUR SOUL TO GAS!!!

In Record shops they come under Jazz, then you see reviews about Jaco "fusion bass player" who brought RnB, rock, be bop, world music, etc, etc. I think with a band like Weather Report it's very difficult to pigeon hole, lots of different things going on. It's all labelling really I suppose, in fact I'm not really sure at all, Jazz is a huge genre.

Paula Gardiner is an amazing urb player!!!!

http://www.flashbacksales.co.uk/articles/compression.htm I seem to remember a little from music tech in Glamorgan....but I dropped out far to technical and I kept failing maths -
I think people, jazz musicians, are generally more conservative than they would like to admit - they get to the cutting edge early on in their careers and then stay where they are despite the fact that the music moves on. I find younger people are more informed about a broader range of idioms and are, consequently, less staid in their outlook but the people who learned their craft in the 60s & 70s seem less flexible. Is this me in 10 years time!!?
You in 10 years time? wouldn't have thought so.
Its subtle but, yes. There are many people who book me for jazz gigs but I always get the sense that I am not their first choice because, whilst I can play, I don't fulfil the expectations of the 'jazz aesthetic' by having a 'real' bass. They all ask, for instance, 'do you play the upright'? Would these same jazzers routinely ask double bass players if they played electric? I think its as much to do with the 'perception' of the upright as the 'correct' instrument for the genre as it is a genuine insight into the strengths or weaknesses in my playing. The problem is less of an issue with younger players (I am 44) but, whilst there are exceptions, the old school are still prejudiced in favour of the upright. I have said it 1,000 on here, Steve Swallow is one of the mst musical bass players out there. If the electric is good enough for him....
This is the thing I don't get with Jazz, I'm not on the jazz scene or circuit but I am a fan of some jazz forms, mainly a fusion crossover type of approach (fusion...that can mean anything I suppose) for me it's all about change, exploring sounds, risk taking, rising to a challenge.....so why do they insist that you need an urb? Some aspects of jazz.... don't take this the wrong way should be put in a museum...it's done, time to move on, surely that's jazz? Just my opinion you understand.
Don't get me on the 'electric bass in jazz' thing, Mikey. I have spent my whole career (since 1985) fighting that one - I don't mind losing gigs to Dave Holland but there are some urb players out there that should be encouraged to PACK IT IN!!! NOW!! I can swing as well as most urb players and can nail a lot more than many.
Do you still come across the purists then Bilbo?

Foam under the bridge on a Jazz would work a treat I reckon, add some flats roll off your tone, maybe raise the action a little...funky thud
