Aye, Ronnie. J.
Yep, seems like your torn bassjamm I think either J or P would be fine to use if it's the RnB thing your looking for...maybe go for a rosewood board, and you could try flats on either for that big thud you want. CIJ basses are lighter in weight than MIA maybe that's something to consider. I find the J more tonally versatile than a P but still both are great basses, pickups etc can always be changed if the stock ones don't give you that thud. There isn't much more to say really about Fender basses, they is what they is. Get a Jazz

we're waffling on about how there is nothing happening with the standard 4 string bass and that nobody seems to be taking the instrument forward, pushing boundaries, turning heads...all that sort of stuff
There is not much happening in music not just bass playing.
So True.
Oh, and while we're on the subject of ranting, call me anally retentive if you like, but would people pleeeaaase stop calling our much reverred instrument a bloody "GUITAR!!!" The electric bass was originally conceived as a handily portable alternative to a double bass (with the same tuning, basic technique, etc.) Any similarity in shape to the guitar is purely for convenience. It's a Bass & quite proudly so
Drives me mad when the word "guitar" is used...bass guitarist...hmmm I can't even play guitar
Thankyou. But I reckon he or she will be using a 5 or 6. and have more frets, and different technology fitted into the instrument (lightwave, piezo) ,interchangable parts (fingerboards),setups available at the flick of a switch,a total instrument. the distinction of Bass and guitar, will cease. It wont go in my lifetime, but I see it happening,on the fringes,it exists.
There's already that bass which can go from fretted to fretless, wouldn't mind trying one of those actually!
Its Fine ,but thats not what Im getting at,some people are just seeing "Argh thinks 4 strings are crap and dead"and they are wrong...all wrong. It isnt what Im thinking or saying at all,Im just making the point that theres not much else you can do on the instrument as in its standard form ,apart from make it more versatile and that is the only way really that I see,it continuing to be a valuable instrument in the creation of music. Of course Bass is going to exist,it just wont look like it does in a centurys time, sorry if this is a bit difficult for teatime.
Nah, I don't think that of you at all but I still reckon there will be a player who will come about on a 4 string and give us all something to think about, a musician, writer, performer, not just a bass player.....goes back to the bass hero thread I sort of agree, there isn't much happening at the moment in the bass world that warrants jaws dropping.

C'mon ARGH, you know FOUR IS THE LAW!!! Only teasing mate, how's that big niner coming on?

Guitar players don't have a trained eye,...they don't have any eyes, they just see themselves
Crash course on Harris. Crank the volume, roll off half to 3/4 treble (I take it you use roundwounds) and compress the signal to hell and back.
....and maybe a Precision with a maple board...clickety clack!
While we're on the subject of action and relief, who else shims their fender instruments? I know at least one person does on here, and I'm curious if anyone else does, the quite frankly mahoosive gap on my VMJ is annoying the crap out of me at times and I'm considering trialling it.

Am laughing. Being the sort of handy , (possibly logical) person i am, i removed the bridge and made a new one. It is a simple bar affair, but it sems to have helped a bit. Am now down to a 4mm gap. Its started to buzz a bit tho. Hmmm
I have a wicked gap on my USA 2004 Jazz, doesn't seem to move though, I had a late 90's early 2000 from someone on here and it's perfect, Fender madness, gotta love 'em though , what do you mean by trailling it??
fellas! Umm, originally , i was trying to find out just how far my strings should be from the frets, as i could almost get my fingers through the gap on mine. This has been covered here , which is great, and many thanks for that, but i havent got as far as strings yet! what are you all on about!!! Strewth! cheers Matt (AB)
Sorry mate
Always been flats since the getgo Heard that Rotosound was gonna stop making them...so started the endorsement thing, just to keep them going.
You're dead right, I just read up on it, well I'll be damned he reckons he keeps his finger nails a little longer too!!! AND, he use the same bass, it's just had loads of paint jobs. I used to be well into Harris years ago but I've never been able to get the technique down, the galloping technique, the covers band I'm with at the moment do The Trooper nightmare to play, I play a muted or damp second note to get me through it....don't think anyone's noticed yet
-
Harris has ALWAYS used flats..Jacks terrible for breaking strings. I break laws....f*** 4. Im stronger than True
No way!! Harris never always used flats........did he? I can imagine Jack breaks strings with the technique he uses, like a pulling or plucking upwards.
I just can't do it as well as Eltham so I just take the planks to him when they need doing. Once they are sorted properly it's a fairly rare occurrence as I stick with the same strings and don't tend to fiddle with my proper basses
Haven't seen Eltham in ages, he did a marvellous fret job for me once, he's like a scientist of set up
-
FOUR!! is the law!!! Anyway, why did Harris go to flats? I didn't know our Jack was a heavy weight either. Of course you realise people are going to end up vomiting and have bowel movements when you gig these sonic monsters!! Good on ya mate
-
Yep! he's manly alright....he's got a niner.......so I heard
Ahhh you big set of girls.... Get some .110s on and stop playing soft like! Learn the TONE.
nice one ARGH, I just find using 110's madness, I lose all the ringing tone of a 105. I just put some 50's on for a gig tomorrow night, the band tune down a semi tone so it helps keep the tension......can I be in the heavy gang now?????
-
Cheers OG, I keep it pretty low with a lighter playing approach and more power/volume from my amp. Freaked me out when I had my CIJ 62 the other week the vintage radius seems to give a higher action than the usual USA jazz radius. I've been tweaking the rod and making saddle adjustments for the last week or so
I don't hear anything unique from Bass Players anymore...just plodders. You listen to Bruce Foxton, Andy Rourke, Mick Karn, Percy Jones, Hooky, Bernard Edwards, Pino (you get me drift)....you'd buy an album just to hear what they are doing. Nobody is standing out from the crowd.
Yep!!....... I think plodding or chunking along is good though when needed but you're right I wouldn't rush out today, buy a "new band" album because of the bass player. -
So in my case where our cover band plays james brown, chili peppers, some funk/disco and some rock like arctic monkeys, wouldit be best to suggest that i would require a jazz bass with the s1 switch to add more bottom end on the rock songs, but then i also have the option to switch it off for funk and disco? Or as i have read reports of the s1 going faulty etc would i be ablke to get away with just having a fender jazz without the s1 switch as i am scared to death of losing bottom end?
It's all down to taste really, some of players hate them some players love them, I wouldn't focus so much on the S1, you'll be fine with or without it Isn't Flea using an early 60's Jazz at the moment, that pink one? check it out see if he's modified it. I reckon you'll get plenty of low end either way, besides the S1 switch isn't instant bass balls.
A very rough version of a new song I introduced to the band last night (the drummer was running late, as ever) - need to get the lyrics and vocals added, obviously: http://www.thehumanzoo.com/alex/Rehearsal%...e%2029jan08.mp3 I'm doing some atypical things on this but is it unique? I doubt it - is anything unique?! Do true bass heroes do something amazing with the instrument or with the music? I suspect the latter - that's what gets you excited about them, because the songs move you. Jaco and Jimi would have never had their impact if their amazing skill with the instrument hadn't translated into amazing music. Alex
I was enjoying that, like you say, using skill and translating it into music. The level of skill today though is more advanced than Jimi or Jaco, it's like technical ability has improved no end but being a musician hasn't. I've heard of your band before somewhere, can't remember where though. -
So you don't think that any of the acts I've listed are in any way unique? I mentioned Tim Commerford more because interviews during his stint in Audioslave were quite unique. Here was someone that was incredibly particular about his tone. I think it's lame when bands reform for the money, but the point I was making is that Sting, Jack Bruce, John Paul Jones, Mike Rutherford, etc... are/were bass heroes for a huge number of people and that they're still playing live, still being interviewed and, therefore, still relevant.
No I don't think any of them are unique at all, incredible players, yes but not unique. I agree with you, the legends you listed are still relevant without a doubt but when you hear their approach you can hear a unique personal statement or tone which for me is lacking in most players today, everybody seems to be amazingly accomplished, which is great but one slap/active tone and one fast picking/tapping tone sounds the same to me. -
Too right. The latest person I saw and was blown away with was Hadrien Feraud. Not a "bass hero" in the sense of this thread, but I was watching a 24 year old who made everything look and sound so effortless. He's the first bassist in many a year that's seriously made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. And being 41, I think I've "grown up" .... or have I?
Yep he's a mad, mad player With all due respect to ARGH and the 9 string he's using ( insane instrument by the way, I mean that in a good way you understand ) I reckon some 4 string player will come along.....one day ( hopefully soon) and give us all something to think about.
