1.
to be honest i think your just being a bit grumpy and old. I think you just like old music better so no matter how good something new sounds, you just won't want to listen to it. Also i think the comment about stuff sounding better looking back on it is true too. I mean there are 2 things we are going to remember about music in this decade in 20 years. That's the really great music and the really really crap music. It's like for me, i know that in 2006 i thought i was having a proper sh*t year. Looking back on it, it actually doesn't seem bad at all. I was inspired to play by bands who were recently formed. it's what i grew up with and i don't think you can truly see how inspiring something is unless you grew up with it yourself. You didn't grow up with it so i can see why you might not understand why people think it's so good. But just because you can't see anything in it doesn't make it crap music. So i would appreciate it if you would stop insulting some of my favorite music.
Good points, I don't think you have to grow up with something to be inspired though

    Action
Even different makes of strings of the same gauge can affect action. Being a cheapskate i used to use Warwick Red Label. I've gone over to Roto swing bass now, and lowered my action significantly, despite being the same gauge - is this due to difering tension between the string makes?
I've used Roto's for years and tried other makes in between, seems to me that Roto's have a higher tension than most other makes, I get the same tension from D'addario EPS Prosteels but the G is a 50 instead of a 45 and the D is a 70 instead of a 65.
  3. With all due respect to bassbloke, I can't get into it when legends reform but they all seem to be doing it lately, I don't see what the big attraction is. The modern bass players listed in bassblokes post are without a doubt brilliant but what I'd like to see or hear is bass players doing something utterly unique, doesn't have to be technically mind blowing, doesn't have to sound perfect just some truth and personality in their playing.
  4.
I agree with the other posts. You used to get inspiration by seeing great bands up close. The Marquee in London was a 200 people venue, I've got a flyer for just one month, August 1966, with The Who, David Bowie (twice), The Move (every Thursday), Cream and John Mayall! The media was very small back then. You had to be good, talented, different or just plain outrageous to get noticed. You couldn’t make a record unless you were good and it wouldn't get played unless it was even better (I am not making any personal judgements here). The Cr*p filters just worked. Now anyone can write, record and release a record by themselves. At least one of the thousands of magazines will cover you, Radio XYZ will play it and your audience will not have very much to aspire to. It's a downward spiral. Music now is a "commodity", aural wallpaper, the musical equivalent of paint by numbers. These days the people in the music business are so "ordinary" because comedy, big city trading, film, TV etc has taken the lively, naughty and original talents. Unfortunately music seems to be left with the rest!
Well said
  5. Have to agree with ARGH, the S1 switch is, was, always will be a complete waste of time. Glad it's gone, I have mini protests and demos on my jazz where I refuse to use the neck pick up at all Wouldn't mind trying the new Jazz out.....as soon as they get rid of those Hipshots and replace them with the classic machine head, the big old chunky ones or the vintage reverse. They'll be adding locking nuts, fine tuning, more switches, stupid cutaways before we know it, all the stuff that simply shouldn't be on a Jazz or Precision.
  6. He's open to offers too, ask him if he'll let it go for £300/£350, £450's a bit much I reckon. Larry Taylor must be a good luthier, USA necks don't quite fit 62 reissue bodies (assuiming it's CIJ reissue), the necks are a little bigger. Ask for pics of the neck joint and heel block etc.
  7. I just got hold of A CIJ 62 reissue (fretless though) very good bass, comfortable, vintage spec and a nice round growl to it. Not played an Aerodyne, plenty have here though, good bass by all accounts. You say you got £800......why not try the new Fender Jazz out? They got rid of the S1 switch, modified vintage bridge, hipshots. Either way you wont go far wrong with Fender MIA or CIJ. Good luck.
  8. What I also find sad, is we hardly ever go to record shops anymore, I used to love delving through all the albums. I DON'T DO IT ANYMORE!!!!! shame on me!! Being able to buy the finished product, was in my opinion what is was all about...having the actual album in my hand was a great feeling, now I just buy certain tracks or have copies given to me, I'll admit it I've become so lazy. I can't actually remember the last time I bought a real, 3D, "proper" album from a shop...I disgust myself ..but I put it down to the fact that there's not much out there worth buying
  9. Nooooo, not another Sex Pistols!!!! The way I see it is, anyone can be in a band these days, there's far too many "bands" about most of which are useless, there's no quality control. How can there possibly be any "heroes" or any songwriters with material that'll become classic when all that's being churned out is tripe?
  10. Actually It's not all that bad...I don't mind second hand basses, I'd buy a second hand CIJ.
  11. Well, that's a bit of a blow there are some other options, http://www.fareastguitars.co.uk/index.htm http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/ http://www.mijfenders.com/index.htm There may be others I'm not sure. I was lucky, I made it by a week or so. Shame though, it was a good crack.
  12. Sounds really good....just goes to show it's all in the hands
  13. It's got all tedious and difficult to watch already

    8x10 cabs
I seem to recollect reading somewhere that between an Ampeg, Ashdown and a Marshall, it was actually the Marshall that sounded the best in a shoot out..
Marshall really!! I use a 410 Marshall with my Hartke 410, oooo..... I have to say it....I can't stand the Marshall If you remember where you caught that dood, will you let us know mate ? wouldn't mind reading that. Cheers Jase.

    New Fenders
I think I'm going to have a P 5, but I have just been told if I order it now, I may have it in April.... Now for a custom made I would be OK with that but for what should be 'off the shelf' thats a bit poo isn't it?
That'll be the extra string Fender have to worry about

    New Fenders

Keep it classic I reckon, that's what they're good at. I love Fender but hate the re hashing of switches, bridges, machine heads, etc, etc.
  19. Surprised this is still here

    New Fenders
Well, as i said, Blizzard white with Maple neck is not something the HW-One series offers. So that two things to start with. Not aiming this at anyone inparticular but a few people seem to just not like MIA's. I find that strange as im guessing these people havent actually played every MIA out there ot give a blanket statement about how MIA's are rubbish. To me a bass is a bass. If it plays well then its a good one. People will spend £1500-£3000 for a bass. That, to me is OTT, not £800. All IMHO of course.
+1 I use both MIA and CIJ, I think they're as good as eachother. I can't really comment on MIM, never owned one.
  21. Just had my JB62-85 FL from Ishibashi. 1229
  22. Saturday Nights gig was good, The Office in Swansea, despite the fact we got soaked loading the gear in. Our guitarist had a few problems in the second half of the gig, his amp decided to play up, his leads were breaking down and he was snapping strings , he sorted it real quick though...first time a rhythm guitarist came in handy Sunday nights gig, The Swiss Chalet Swindon, good gig, a great friendly crowd and the Landlord John is a top bloke!!! One of those gigs where everything goes fine, good sound, band played well and we got another date.
  23.
This is my first time on this forum and this thread caught my eye. Sadly for bad reasons. I recently spent two weeks or so learning around forty or so Ska tunes (a lot of them were of course by Madness). I was supposed to be joining a well-known tribute act and actually rehersed with them twice after learning a mountain of material before they decided to tell me their old bass player had had a change of heart and re-joined the group! Still love Madness, however watching them last night on Jools Holland just reminded me of how annoyed I was during that whole fiasco! Sorry if my first post is too somber! lol
Feck 'em, there loss mate
  24. Tried my new JB62-85FL at practice tonight, pickups seemed fine, it had a good deal of growl and thump to it. Sounded completely different to my US, more of a round warm growl. I used a Hartke HA4000 with a Hartke 410TP, I Also had some compression from my Zoom 607, none of the settings were changed. The US had a mid bass tone and the CIJ had a round growl. For me it's about having two or three good basses with different tones which in turn leads to various way of playing.
Whats wrong with the Hipshots?
don't think anything's wrong with them, just prefer pre CBS type machine heads, y'know rivet through the post, reverse and all that
