Most expensive bass you've come across
molan replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Jens does have a ratecard that’s supplied to dealers but he doesn’t publish them. One simple reason was that he sells all over the world & it was a major hassle keeping on top of exchange rate fluctuations. -
No problems here. Simple install and everything working fine.

These are quite different beasts from the current 'Standard' models. If I remember rightly they were built in very small batches, maybe 10 - 20, and in the main custom shop by the, at the time, very limited number of luthiers. I think they were kind of a 'test' series to work out a way of batch-building to sit alongside the core custom lines. At the time the only way to get a Fodera was to place a full custom order. The idea behind these was to build the small batches in popular combinations but with no custom specs. All built alongside the custom basses. This allowed people to sample the full Fodera bass experience without the, circa 2 year, wait time and at a more affordable price (bearing mind that an 'affordable' Fodera is still a LOT of money to many players). The natural follow on to these was the Standard series we now have. Simpler construction, the biggest time saving is the straight headstock instead of angled back, followed by the rear cutaway, and generally larger build numbers. I've owned 5 or 6 Foderas and although my early standard is the lowest cost it's actually the only one I've hung on to! I certainly think these are worth a decent amount more than most of the current Standard models you'll see on the used market (although the newer Ltd editions are getting quite special / pricey now). Definitely worth £3K+

I see 2.92 has been released. Painless install for me. supposed to fix lots of small glitches in 2.91 / 2.90

From MarkBass: ”British bassist John McKenzie has worked with a vast range of very popular artists including Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, Eurythmics, The Pretenders, Tom Scott, Morrissey Mullen, Seal, David Bowie, Eternal, Shakira, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Annette Peacock, James Ingram, Phoenix Horns, Wham, The Christians, Tim Finn, Lionel Richie, Steve Hillage, Man, Kajagoogoo, Eric Burdon, Andy Taylor, Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra, Serge Foubert and Raw Stylus. More recently he has toured with Bond, Wild, Ive Mendes, and concert pianist Maksim“

Just heard that John McKenzie has left us I remember him back from the mid 70’s with Man but his Recording and Live CV reads like a who’s who of artists to have played with.

I've been watching this one closely. Price doesn't really bother me but I'd like to see how good the 'neural capture' is. I have Jule, Demeter, ATS etc amps plus some pre-amp pedals that I'd love to sample & capture without the size and design of the Kemper. I have to admit that I bought the Stomp specifically to see how I'd get on with one whilst waiting for the Quad-Cortex to come out

I upgraded to 2.9 completely painlessly. The new tuner operation is great. Means the tuner is a decent live tool now. Very simple stuff but really makes a world of difference. I like the Alpaca Rouge a lot as well. Simply running it without any dynamics or amp/cab sims sounds very nice with my Sei J that’s relatively low output (for an active bass). Adding the SVT Pro4 sounded nice with this bass as well. Need to work more on the new compressor but it’s getting good reviews and I’ve seen some settings to try so will get on those tomorrow morning

For what it’s worth I’m loving my Stomp into RCF NX12-SMA setup. Having great fun playing with presets and building sounds I really like. I’ve found it very sensitive to different instruments as well. I thought it might be one of those things were everything sounds the ‘same’ because the effects/amp/cab are having a major impact on the final tone but it’s really not the case. The only downside to this is that I can spend lots of time setting up a tone for one bass and then when I try another I almost have to start all over again. I think I need more banks of presets to play with, lol.

I thought the purpose of this thread was to try and avoid all the random fragmentation already available across the site? Padding it out with criticisms and personal opinions about why NOT to use an FRFR based setup seems very counter-productive 🤦♂️
-
Looks like it’s already getting congested with comments about why someone doesn’t like FRFR cabs 🤦♂️

The pedals are essentially the onboard controls set in an external casing so, yes, they work. The Sad pre is a boost only circuit with a very significant effect on the sound - I think not least because of those frequency and Q settings. I’ve swapped a few tone circuits in and out of basses over the years and generally found that the aftermarket ones have more of an overall effect than changing pickups. Obviously depends on which pre and which pups of course - some are more subtle than others.
-
No, not at all. A Sadowsky running completely passive sounds very different to one with both treble and bass set at 10 (which is pretty much unusable). Roger spent a long time selecting the frequencies for each tone pot and the Q of each as well specifically to work interactively with each other and not to overlap in the mids. Lots of people have tried to cop this sound but I’ve never really heard anyone get it close before.
-
Exactly. That how I tested it vs the onboard pre. I didn’t use an expression pedal but simply moved the low and high gain settings in line with manual adjustment of the tone controls. Obviously not an exact science as the manual tone controls aren’t visibly calibrated but it’s easy to set them at half way and then pop the preamp off and on.
-
Only if the preamp setting genuinely matched the onboard Sadowsky pre.
-
I was having some fun with this today. Using my ‘real’ Sadowsky I set it to passive and used the HX setting and played with different boost levels whilst flipping between passive and active on the bass itself. Sounded incredibly accurate to me

Got my Stomp on Friday and an RCF NX 12 SMA and having great fun with it. Seems really intuitive to use Didn't find much in the stock patches i liked but downloaded a clutch and have been playing with them off and on all weekend! Is there a single link that shows all the potential downloadable presets for the Stomp? I don't want to simply 'collect' a million of them (been through that silly game with Adobe presets!), just want to see how some people have approached getting a great live tone with an FRFR setup.

This is a really common issue with flats, especially La Bellas. I’ve sorted lots of issues with a random dull sounding flat that turned out to be a little twist whilst fitting. The guy who ran La Bella’s sales operation for years taught me how to do this and said he was the only person who could fix dead strings ‘on the phone’ back in the 60’s when people used to call up complaining 😂
