So I missed this thread first time around but thought I'd chuck in my thoughts anyway I absolutely love my J Update & it's just about my favourite J shaped bass of the many different ones I've tried. It's absolutely my 'go to' bass whenever I want to work on a new song or try an amp or cab etc. It's really hard to put my finger on what makes it different from anything else but it just seems to 'work' really, really well for me The 'killer' control is that lovely passive treble pot - I generally set it bang in the middle of its range & then gently tweak it depending on the core sound I'm after for any particular song. Everything else just stays full on with the active bass also in the centre position. I currently have two & recently tried another and the level of consistency in build quality and sound of each one is amazing really. I decided to put my blue one up for sale but purely because I have a marginal preference in colour to my red one & I can't really justify owning a pair of these. The blue one has a slightly older version of the Greengrove pre-amp without the dip switches and is a fraction mellower than the red one. If anyone fancies trying it out then it's sitting up at Bassgear in Harrogate at the moment http://www.bassgear.co.uk/products-page/pr...te-4-pre-owned/
Thanks, Barrie. The final contest of the tour was a great evening. I suppose the band gets pretty slick when you've done the show forty times since March! Len Goodman was on top form, btw - SEVEN!!!
Nice one Rich - sounds like fun
You dont even know me, yet you offer to lend me a bass for the gig. Unparalled kindness that proves that there really are some very nice people out there, with good Karma coming their way. I am trying to borrow a bass off of my drummers brother, so hopefully, i should be alright on that front, but i will take you up on your ionsanely kind offer, should i really have no other option.
There's plenty of people here who will lend a hand to a bass 'brother' in need, lol. I think there's a few people nearer to you who might be able to help but the offer absolutely stands if you want the Nash - it already looks like it's been through a few wars so less obviously prone to wear & tear marks Zap me a Pm if you want to pop over

A lot of the newer ones are tunable so the venue owner can set the frequency range that triggers them If they've been professionally set up with all electrics running through them then there's little you can do other than working out exactly where the trigger frequency is and trying to cut that on the PA and backline I have managed to bypass them by taking a power feed from another mains circuit with a very long extension cable though

Forgot to say - I can lend you a bass if you've got an important gig coming up? Most of my basses are 'out' at the moment but there's a 4 string Nash Jazz you could use? Just keep your brother well away from it! I'm about an hour's drive away I reckon
Yeah same bloke but wrong spelling! In the 70s he had a hundred pickups made with his name on. They put the intrusive t in and he flung them across the rehearsal room where they lay until people like me 'recycled' them. I joined in a band Brinsley had just left a couple of years ago, but apart from this he seems to have retired from music.
Is this the same Brinsley who used to play with Graham Parker? Really nice guitarist if so!
Lovely too meet you, Phil! Yes, I loved the Fodera, but was totally bowled over with Barrie's Wil Lee Sadowsky - Could you tell?! Great to meet Toasted and to have a good chat with Barrie - It's been too long, mate
I am besotted with the Fodera & it's come home with me - need to decide very soon if it's going to stay for good. . . I think I realised the moment when you said "that's possibly the best bass I've played this year" about the Will Lee that you quite liked it Rich Good to see you again too, hope the gig tonight goes well (in fact you're probably already playing!).
I never thought I'd say this about an S2 (never been keen on the body shape)... but that S2 really is sexy as hell.
You should play / hear it! Sounded awesome & a dream to play Loads more tonal flexibility that I'd have thought possible from a Status.

Had a string of trade offers for this but nothing really that I need at the moment so it's still up for grabs. I did get one request to split the head and foot switch which I'm vaguely loathe to do as the controller is intrinsic to really getting the best out of these heads but if I can sell both independently then I'd go for something like £600 for the head & £75 for the switch -

Market for these has definitely dipped in the past year, I reckon original condition ones are trading at around £200 - £300 down now & anything with aftermarket mods is not only lower in value but getting harder to sell too. I reckon the guys above have got the pricing about right - I have seen the odd one creeping down to £1,100 and if it's a real '70's heavy monster than that'll really hurt value as well

I've seen Lee live a few times - one of those guys who always looks like he's having a great time Superb beard as well

Help, what have I done? have I screwed my new TC amp?
I love organised soundguys! C
This guy was an absolute star - I've never seen anyone as organised as him at a gig. The speed with which he, and his team if required, would break down a large PA was nothing short of breathtaking. We had a very big rig for Hawkwind once and after the gig was finished the band & road crew disappeared of to the dressing room to 'refresh' themselves. By the time they came out (which wasn't really that long) we were wheeling the last of the cables boxes out the door, all speakers, amps etc had already been loaded into the van. The look on their faces was wonderful - you could see them all doing a double take trying to work out f they'd walked out of the wrong door to a different stage etc -
My speaker cables are consequently 0.5inches thick and day-glow orange, whilst I use (and really look after) old-school Fender grey instrument cables.
I used to do some sound engineering work for a lovely guy who runs a wet/dry hire PA business. Every single cable he owned was colour coded. All mic cables were black (so they would be as unobtrusive as possible on stage) All speaker cables were red (so people would think they might be 'live' or hot & not randomly unplug them) All interconnects were blue (not quite sure why, lol) This system was so simple yet worked brilliantly - easy to set up & super quick when breaking the PA down to make sure each cable went back in the right box. Conversely I helped run a friend's PA last week end he had about 5 different cable colours and randomly threw speaker, mic and patch cables into the same sports bag - it was a nightmare to find the right cable for each application (didn't help that he also seems to use just about every type of plug 7 socked combination imaginable!). -
Just turned it on again and there's a slight electrical crackle from the on/off switch at the rear and nothing else.
I think that crackle is very common - mine often does it & so did the only other one I've tried. Have you checked boring stuff like the fuse in the mains plug & the plug itself to make sure there isn't a loose wire somewhere? -
Just checked mine and it's immaculate
Bang on. By placing the strap button lower, you get a perfect balance and the bass is held perpendicular to the players body. A much more, imo, comfortable position.
I know this might be a dumb question but if it works really well then why do most manufacturers put the strap button in line with the centre of the bridge? I had a quick look on Bernie's site and noticed that not every Spitfire has this design (but maybe some of the pics are older and all the new ones have it as standard).
-
-
Wow that's pretty, I've had a bit of a yearning for a Spitfire after Bernie's appearance at the London Bass Bash recently. The scratches don't show in the pics so they can't be that bad Do you know how much it weighs? Also, and I've only just noticed this with Spitfires, the rear strap button seems to be very low on the body compared to conventional position. I'm assuming this is designed to help the balance & the way it hangs on a strap?
Would you be interested in an offer for just the cab? I'm looking for a light weight 2x12 cabinet and this looks perfect mate! I'd love the whole rig but couldn't possibly afford it
Sorry - I did have a price for the cab alone and someone offered cash & collection so it's sold now -
