1. I've played this - really nice bass & I just love the colour, looks even nicer in the flesh. Ady is a top man to deal with as well
2. Thanks for the bump Schnozz - I'm surprised this hasn't moved yet. The neck is seriously nice as it happens. The rear is a lovely tactile satin finish which I really like It really is like a brand new bass, not a single playing mark that I can see anywhere.
3.
Oh i like this...
Good album - I think this is my favourite track though
4.
Thats a real nice Jazz they are offering... is that an OHSC with it as well?
Good point - original case def worth quite a bit in overall valuation
5.
first saw them when i won tickets on Robbie Vincents big beat show, to see Anita....i was 19 i think....when i saw that concert i knew i would always love Soul and Gospel music... bass playing is fantastic, the band are just awsome, especially the organ player... and the harmonies...!..fills me with joy when i listen to this record..
I think I was at that gig - did you get George Duke in between Perri & Anita? We had front row seats (the stage was 'in the round') and at one point Anita came right over to the front & blew a kiss at me - I nearly fainted!
6.
Oh .....ive been offered this in a straight trade......what do you think?? i will be visiting them to play it of course... http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/o...asses/item/6740
I like the white with maple neck & tort guard look Interesting that they call it a 'player's' bass - for some reason that makes me think it's not in as good condition as a 'collector's' bass? Could just be the old sceptic in me again! If the straight trade deal looks very favourable to their list price then that would raise a few doubts too. . .
7. Simply can't beat a Celinder in the 'super J' category (IMO). I have a J Update 4 & like it so much I've just bought another
8. Forgot to say Bub5, When I pick up my '78 you're more than welcome to try it out or borrow it for a bit
9. I paid about £1,450 for my '78 (imported from the USA). It has non-original pickups (fitted with Jason Lollars which I really like) and a re-fin in a nitro blue metallic. The finish looks great from a distance of 2-3 feet or more but up close you can see some flaws in the wood through the nitro. Neck pocket isn't great but it plays well & sounds very nice. I think all the pots and other hardware are original and came with original case. It's currently at the Gallery where Martin has stoned the frets & giving it a decent set up. Really looking forward to getting it back Anyway - just giving the details as an idea of relative prices. Mine was pretty fair price in the US but obviously shipping & duties have added a bit to the price. I was happy to pay this much because I loved the colour, lol. It had also been previously owned by a TB guy who seems to really know his stuff and he claimed it was a good player. To be honest I'm quite surprised that recognised dealer is selling as low as £1,199. I don't think I've seen a genuine late '70's at that sort of price in a dealer for a long time. I may just be an old sceptic but it sounds to me like they know it needs some work and/or there are more non-original parts than just the vol & tone controls?
10. I'm certainly here every day. Damn BlackBerry sometimes struggles with pages that have a lot of images on though & that slows me down a lot
11. I believe we currently have the Lion King's resident bass player here on the forum too. . .
12. I played in a classic soul band for a few years and really enjoyed it. I then moved and joined another band which also plays disco. I learnt the requisite songs for the audition (Disco Inferno & Hot Stuff I think) & was offered the gig. I then sat down & listened to the full disco part of the set and really thought I'd never want to play it as I simply didn't like many of the songs. The band convinced me to join and, lo & behold, I dicovered that the dynamics & challenge of playing disco were actually really good fun Boogie Oogie Oogie is now my favourite of the songs we do & I recently fought to kep it on the set list!
13. I once 'duetted' on bass with Pino, lol. I was trying out an amp at the Bass Centre in Wapping and, God knows why, I was playing the part from Wherever I Lay My Hat (Paul Young version). Next thing I knew I could hear someone soloing over the top of the stuff I was playing. First thought was that whoever it was had been 'showing off' a bit but his playing was seriously nice & sooo much better than mine. I stuck my head up over the wall of amps & cabs to see Pino sitting on the other side. We smiled at each other & nodded and I quickly ducked out of sight
14.
This is a good one; Jerry Preston with a BC Rich Wave bass in Maceo Parker's band.. See Here
This pops up just about every time someone gets a topic going about great funk playing - and none the worse for it either! I love the tone he gets from the BC Rich - I've seen Maceo a few times and he always plays this. However the bass nver sounds quite like this version. . .
15. Had some very strong interest in this but not managed to get anything sorted yet so thought I'd give it a little nudge up the page
16. Another big recommendation on AC basses from me. Seriously well put together & everything about them just 'works' somehow
17. I went for the AE's but often pull the tweeters out as I found them a bit too bright for my ears. Stage positioning with those rear ports can be an issue (although some people like the fact that they tend to accentuate the bass more). I stick mine on an Auralex Gramma pad & have never had any problems. In the end it was the weight that swung it for me, the extra heft of the HT's meant the AE's were much easier for me to lug around. Haven't had any issues with the finish but mine did come with fitted covers
18. Only half an hour to go - c'mon someone buy this from Oli and put him out of his misery
19. Wow, just channel flipping & Cheryl Lynn pops up on an M&S advert! I have this on 12" somewhere along with Encore: Gotta love the male dancers on this vid, lol
20.
MB1. ...Blimey Barry!...Where d'ya keep getting these tasty basses from? ...have you found a hole in the doctor of basses fence?
I wish - I reckon I could snaffle a few & Nick wouldn't even notice This was actually a PX bass and I was always pretty certain I'd sell it onwards. Most interest coming from Euro country at the moment.
21.
Wouldn't be a hard job to do, local Luthier's calling, its already setup. I prefer it fretless. The cost would probably take you up to half the price of a new USA still in as new condition.
Not that expensive to get something fretted these days
22. My current favourite slice of funk - Down to the Bone, The Brighter Side Julian Crampton (who else!) on bass. . .
23. As someone who's owned quite a few high & lower end basses all I can say is that you really can tell the difference as you move up the scale. Of course there will be some expensive basses that don't hit the mark, or simply don't suit the player but others just get better & better. My current favourite is a Celinder and I think this sums this maxim up perfectly. At the end of the day it's simply a J bass 'copy' but it's just soooo much better than any other J derivative 4 string I've ever played. Nothing flashy, no expensive custom wood top, no great bank of tone controls and switching options etc. but just a fabulous bass to play. I recently 'tested' it fairly extensively over a period of a few days against a very good £700 value bass and another worth around £1,100 & it just killed them both in so many ways. Both of them were really very nice basses in their own way and if I could only afford the £700 one I would be more than happy with it, same goes for the £1,100 (these are used values by the way, probably £950 & £1,800 new). New it would cost about £3.5K - is it 'worth' more than a £700 bass and/or is it 5 times better, absolutely not. Would I choose it ahead of the £700 bass - every time. . .
24.
I fonly my Granny were still alive, I'd be able to sell her. Bumpola for a stunning bass.
Dig her up, might still be worth something
