1. I remember this one when Status first listed it Full Specs are: S2-Classic Headless 4-string, woven graphite bolt-on neck. Custom 32" scale fingerboard with 'BendWell'. 19mm string spacing. Bookmatched Walnut facing with walnut centre section. 2-piece solid Mahogany body. Natural on the front, deep cherry on the back. Custom 'soft feel' satin lacquer. Two Status soap-bar pickups. 3-band EQ with variable frequency midrange. Master volume, pickup blend control. Mono-rail bridge/tuner units. Black hardware. Have you asked Rob Green how much it might cost to repair that chip Stuart?
  2.
interesting... i dont want to reassemble the bass because it was professionaly setup-ed. but it can be weird, you have 68 body and have 64 pots , pups ? why ? but you are right , its very hard.
It's very common for pots and pickups to be different dates from bodies and necks. From what you've said it sounds like the things that are definitely dated are the pots and neck. It could be that it's a complete '68 bass that just has some earlier pots in it. To get maximum value you'd need to pull it apart and take pictures of everything. It would even help to get shots of things like the cavities and neck pocket that might show the original colour and the first refinish. At the very least I think you'll need a picture of the heel of the neck with a date stamp that shows it's a '68. Just trying to help you value it as accurately as possible here, not trying to detract from how much it's worth
  3.

Thanks for that It's really hard to date bodies as they often don't have any distinguishing marks or date stamps. As it's been refinished twice this can make it even harder to date sometimes. The dowel marks don't mean it's a '64, or pre-CBS though. Fender continued to use this method of finishing for well after '65. I have a pair of '68 J basses that both have the same dowel marks as my '63 and '64. Without any other dating references it could be difficult to prove the age of this body - it could potentially be a complete '68J with '64 pots and neck plate. Might be worth going back to the people who supplied the provenance document and asking for more information.
  4. Can I ask how you've identified the body as a '64?
  5.
Why does he leap on BF posts so quickly and regularly to denounce them? Has he got a personal gripe?
Now that would be telling. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to be as open and honest as I'd like to be
  6.
I've followed this thread from day one and my admiration of the s**t-stirring abilities of molan just increases every time he posts. A perfect lesson in how to create a row - just brilliant! Thank you molan for being so entertaining. Really! Frank.
I do my best Frank, thanks for the vote of confidence 😂
  7.
"However - We've never stocked BareFaced and won't take them as PX either." That's a strange business decision. Both Bergantino and Barefaced are in the top echelon of bass cabs ever made. Whether someone likes them or not doesn't change that fact. The reality is. . . you don't get "best in show" awards and reviews (as both these companies do) by not being one of the best.
It's not strange at all Chris, just basic integrity. We won't stock anything that we don't believe has a basic level of quality and that we can stand behind. Our reputation rests on supplying decent quality goods that we know will perform well, won't break and won't deteriorate rapidly. Too many customers with extremely bad experiences in terms of quality control and build for us to be able to sell them as a reputable dealer

    Spector

I've owned a clutch of Spectors and really like the 5 string NS5XL's. I think I had 3 of them at one point and finally whittled them down to just one that became my only gigging bass. Then our female singer had to leave the band and I didn't really need that 5th string any more and I sold it - still miss that bass though I've got one of the early SSD 5's lurking in my loft at the moment that we're trying to sell for someone. Same basic build as the later Spector 5's but with a 34" scale instead of 35". I really can't tell the difference in tone and much prefer the shorter scale - may just dig it out tomorrow for a quick play
  9. I've seen a few things about this but nothing explaining quite how it happened. Any news on how they both are?
  10. I don't think it matters a huge amount when gigging. It can definitely make a difference at auditions. I'd generally be tempted to take something 'traditional' looking for any audition because a lot of people out there have an immediate bias to some brands and, more importantly, a huge dislike to anything out of the ordinary. When it comes to the gig I just take whatever is my favourite bass at the time. Sometimes I'll deliberately take an 'inappropriate' bass though. There's quite a rough venue we sometimes play and I usually take a pink bass there, either that or a gold metal flake finish one
  11. Putting new strings on can often be a waste of time / money too. I bought something recently and the seller put on a new set of Rotosound Steels in a 50-110 gauge. I didn't ask for this, he just thought it would be a nice idea. I don't like Rotosounds, rarely use steel and generally have 40-95's on. The Rotos came off immediately and went into my 'spares' box.
  12. It's the same in a few markets. There's a particular watch brand I'm quite fond of (I have about 12) that sometimes has really good sales. There's a few buyers out there that snap up some of the sales watches and, almost immediately, bung them up on eBay at the full price. A current example is a nice watch available in the sale for £1,000. On eBay it's listed at £1,400. You'd think people would be smart enough to check the current retail value if something but a couple of these sellers keep doing this and you can see the watches selling!
  13.
The whole 'x sells this so they wouldn't like Barefaced' argument is a bit tired. Plus, do Bass Gear actually carry Bergantino products anymore?
No, we stopped selling them at least a year ago. You may have noticed I referred anyone interested in them to either Mark at Bass Direct and The Gallery for Bergantino. This doesn't mean that, as a player, I don't like them and that, as a retailer, I have nothing but respect for their build quality, choice of materials, tone and reliability. Jim Bergantino is also a complete gentleman with a lot of integrity and can't do enough to help his customers. However - We've never stocked BareFaced and won't take them as PX either.
  14.
I have a Suhr Jazz also , one of the best Jazz necks I've played in 30 years of playing ..GLWTS
Me too
  15.
Re the Bergs- I think those who have them, rate them. They are like rocking horse sh*t on here- I'd love another HD112.
I think that's because Berg owners buy them and realise just how good they are - whereas other brands fall into the 'emperor's new clothes' bracket and consistently appear for sale here. . .
  16. A lot of these will end up in the hands of gigging pros in the USA. It's a very different market over there compared to here with a much larger pool of pro gigs available. At that level the additional cost is pretty small compared to potential income from gigging. One decent gig would cover the cost premium over an alternative high end J or P.
  17. If you like the MB200 then either of the other MB heads is an obvious option. If you can stretch to the cost then the MB800 has a few advantages other than just total power.
  18. There were some nasty Chinese Fodera knock-offs kicking around a while back. To be fair, apart from the nasty looking trussrod, this one looks better than those.
  19. Be careful if you're not buying a matched set. If the bridge J isn't hum-cancelling then you can get some nasty noise when soloing pickups.
  20.
I suspect you're referring to the impedance, but in case it was the weight.... According to http://www.bassdirec...10_410_212.html the Berg HD210 is 54lbs / 24.5kg According to http://barefacedbass.../Big-Baby-2.htm the BB2 is 13kg/29 lbs with the steel grill and even lighter with the cloth....
The HD is a ceramic speaker so that's where the weight is coming from. The lighter weight Berg 2x10 is the new(ish) HDN model http://bergantino.com/product/hdn210-loudspeaker/ That comes in at 33lbs / 15KG The previous model was the CN which is the same weight but voiced a bit differently and with a 'carbon-like' finish.
  21. I've seen some Fodera copies before but not anything quite like this. I'd love to see it in the flesh just to see how well made it is.
  22. Totally different league in terms of build quality. Bergantino make real pro-level gear. Not sure I've eve heard a Berg cab I didn't like. Definitely sure I've never heard a Barefaced I did. Bass Direct almost always have a good range of Berg in stock and the Gallery in London generally have some too. The HD series are sometimes a bit harder to track down though because so many people have moved away from ceramic magnets. They sound great when whacked up loud in a live band though
  23.
I have family in the New Jersey area of the US and according to them its alleged a certain Mr Springsteen will head out to the local jams or sit in with local bands!
I was at a gig once when he just sort of shuffled onstage and played rhythm guitar for 3 numbers then shuffled off again
  24.
I used to have also New Standard Fodera and honestly I can tell that it was best Fodera that I ever had. And I used to have NYC, Imperial elite 5, Emperor elite 5 and Monarch Standard 4. Only one thing happened to it and it was that original preamp died and I changed it to Pope Flexcore 4 band and still I think that original preamp was far better. I honestly can recommend this Fodera. GLWTS:) - Mikko
As an ex Fodera dealer I've played, and personally owned, a lot of their wonderful instruments. I've hung on to just one and it's a New Standard. I really cannot tell any difference between these and any other bolt-on Fodera custom builds. The New Standards are a very different breed to the 'regular' Standard range and, in my purely personal opinion, of a higher quality and I'd rate them as being more valuable to a player because of this. As others have said though, it's important to be clear about the exact model as it does effect overall desirability to some people.
