1.
Mark Plattie bowies producer at the time was playing 2nd guitar to earl slick and swapped with gail on ashes, the dvd/video is worth a look too...especially wild is the wind, oh you guessed im a bowie nut, whoops.
I really like this live album, some great versions of some of Bowie's best songs. I always thought Earl Slick was a great name for a guitarist! There's a great bit on the show when Bowie says "Earl Slick on guitar" and it sounds so cool - sorry, also an old Bowie freak here. One of the things I remember about this show was that it was the first time I was able to watch something on TV, see that there was a recorded version available, log on to the internet on a 14.4 modem & buy it from Amazon. It was delivered within 48 hours and the whole process was painless. At the time it seemed amazing but of course it's now everyday stuff.
2. Had a quick play on this again today, lovely feel, action lower than a very low thing indeed and looks gorgeous in the flesh. Pics don't really do it justice
3. If the pickups are brand new I'm guessing it didn't have the originals when you bought it?
4.
Season ticket owner?? That's expensive, think of the great basses you could buy with that. I'm also a season ticket holder but a West Ham ST isn't anywhere near as expensive as an Arsenal ST. As for the trade, now if it was a Les Paul I'd be interested but single coils just don't do it for me. Sorry.
Arse ST is about £1,300 for upper tier, 10 rows from the front on the 18 yard line - second most expensive block. Would only just get me one bass a year and I find the bi-weekly trek to the library somewhat cathartic I'm one of those vaguely rare Arse fans who thinks we shouldn't be spending zillions buying new players all the time and support Wenger's theory of bringing in new young players and letting them find their feet. I also think it's better when we don't cruise to an easy win at every bloody home game - where's the fun in that eh? I had loads of arguments with fellow Arse fans about the 4-4 with Spurs recently. Absolutely brilliant game to be at with an amazing atmosphere, exactly what I think footy is supposed to be all about. Thing that cracked me up was a couple of mates arguing with me & it turned out they'd left before the end and missed the real fun - a bit like 3/4 of the Spurs fans as it happens!
5. I must admit that parts of this month's comparison did leave me a little baffled as I didn't think that there would be many people out there who would have lined up this particular mix of instruments as a genuine selection prior to an actual purchase. I could see a 'UK Luthier's" type article with GB, Overwater, Sei, Shuker et al or high end continental Europeans / USA super expensive / exotic jazzes etc. etc. but this group baffled me a little. I agree, to an extent, that once you're over £1,500 then price becomes less important to a degree but even so I would have expected something like this to have matched a set of basses within say £200 - £300 rather than the wider gap that meant they were almost having to apologise for how good the GB might have been. It felt to me like someone had come up with the idea for the article but failed to get the actual basses sorted for a really good direct comparison. So many potential basses to choose from but this was a bit of a mish mash for me. Still, made me think I must try a GB some time Maybe they should ask BC people if they could borrow a few basses, between us we could find enough really interesting instruments to fill a few magazines' worth of articles! PS - If there are any Bass magazine journos on this site then I'd recommend a new proof reader, every issue has mistakes in it and, in these days of computerised checking processes, it's a bit crap to spot typo and layout mistakes every month - apologies if this makes me sound a pernickety old git
6. Good to have a happy Hammer in the club I'm afraid I'm a born 'n' bred Gooner (and season ticket holder) but West Ham have always been a bit of a second team for me and I have a lot of Hammer friends. Looks like you need to trade one of those nice Jazzes for a US Standard Strat to me - obviously I'm not simply saying this because I happen to have a new one sitting in my garage that never gets played
7. Oh dear, this makes rather worrying reading (good job the wife doesn't look here!). I have a bit of a multi trade set up for tomorrow which I've included in this: Basses +2 In Lakland Joe Osborn DPLE Sadowsky NYC Status Electro Warwick Infinity (up for sale very soon) Roscoe SKB Esh Custom MTD 535 StingRay Overwater Jazz Out Modulus VJ Modulus Flea Rickenbacker 4001 Kubicki Key Factor StingRay Roscoe SKB Status Electro Guitars +1 In Fender Strat (included because I traded it for a Euphonic Combo and haven't got round to selling it yet!) Amps & Cabs +5 In EBS Fafner EBS 2x10 EBS 2x12 EBS 2x100 power amp MarkBass Mini CMD 112 MarkBass Traveller 1x15 Ampeg SVT II (up for sale very soon) Ampeg SVT 1510E (also up for sale soon) Eden VT.40 (probably up for sale) Eden 4x10 Euphonic Audio iAmp 350C Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 Genz Benz Shute 3.0 10T Bergantino AE112 x2 Epifani PS600 Out EBS Fafner EBS 2x10 EBS 2x12 Euphonic Audio iAmp 350C x2 Euphonic AUDIO CXL12 Trace Elliot V-Type Pre Amp MarkBass Mini CMD 112 MarkBass Traveller 1x15 Eden 4x10 Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 Bits & bobs +12 In Planet Waves pedal tuner Samson rackmount wireless MXR Bass Auto-Q EBS Multi-Drive EBS BassiQ EBS Dynaverb Tascam BT1 Auralex Gramma Quicklok stool & a few stands My net gain therefore stands at: 2 basses 1 guitar 5 amps/cabs 12 accessories However by the time I've had a bit of a clear out I could easily drop to one bass & a couple of cabs. The biggest difference however is in the overall monetary value of what I'll be left with. Pretty serious upgrades all round
8. I used to use Mill Hill Music - might be too far north for you though. Sometimes also known as Unit 25: http://www.millhillmusic.co.uk/ There's a couple of really big rooms here I reckon one of them must be 30' by 20' and has a stupidly big PA set up with decent monitors etc. It's all a bit dingy but worked for us over several years.
9. Forgot to say earlier that I've had a brief play on this round at Josh's and it really is beautiful & lovely to play. If someone has bought it then I reckon they are going to be very happy
10.
This bass is now for sale @ £1,250. I know everyone says this, but its worth every penny..............................
Looks a very good price, Shame I've moved on to 5's now
11. What a nice pair Obviously a good Jazz always looks nice but I'm especially taken by the GB, looks really lovely.
12. I've been to Matt's a couple of times. Both times I had a wife with me (different one on each occasion!) so all I managed to walk out with was one of these: http://www.umanovguitars.com/store/details...ath=300,325,390 Nice shop though and reall friendly when I was there
13. I'm a real fan of a lot of this stuff. Seen Incognito several times but not sure about them these days when they play at the Jazz Cafe. I think it's too small to really get their dance atmosphere going (and usually I always prefer to see people in small venues). I much preferred them at the Forum in Kentish Town. One of my favourites from this era is the full 12" version of Dream Come True by BNH. Not sure if this is on YouTube anywhere - must have a hunt, but currently in a "quiet zone" without headphones
14. I've been a member for quite a long time, partly because all of my basses were vaguely obscure US made - Modulus, Zon, Kubicki etc. - and I was able to get more info about them over there. I've never really had any problems other than there are so many posts it's impossible to keep up with everything that's going on sometimes! On the religious front - I keep being tempted to say that Carll Hayes' "She Left Me For Jesus" is my newly adopted Xmas song We''ve been datin since high school, we never once left this town We use to go out on the weekends and we''d drink til we drowned But now she's acting funny and I don't understand I think that she's found her some other man She left me for jesus and that just ain't fair She says that he's perfect how could I compare She says I should find him and ill know peace at last If I ever find jesus I'm kickin his ass She showed me a picture all I could do was stare At that freak in his sandals with his long pretty hair They must think that I'm stupid or I don't have a clue Ill bet he's a commie or ever worse yet a jew She left me for jesus and that just ain't fair She says that he's perfect how could I compare She says I should find him and ill know peace at last If I ever find jesus I'm kickin his ass She's given up whiskey and ah takin up wine While she prays for his troubles she's forgot about mine I'm a gonna get even I cant handle the shame Why last time we made love she even called out his name She left me for jesus and that just ain't fair She says that he's perfect how could I compare She says I should find him and ill know peace at last If I ever find jesus I'm kickin his ass It coulda been carlos or even billy or ted But if I ever find jesus Hes gonna wish he was dead amen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyxEO9dqi44
15.
bump for great bass. noone interested?
With today's exchange rate 1,200 Euros is about £1,150 so the value of the £ isn't going to help you much I'm afraid. A couple of months back it would have been more like £875 so in UK pricing the currency change will have put over 30% on the price
16. Chris and I worked out a speedy and painless deal on a StingRay and he collected it today. Nice guy and I'm hoping he has a nice Christmas with it
17. Now residing in sunny Henley-on-Thames Cheers Terry
18.
Cheers mate, I've emailed them re the cost of 5 sets so I'll check this out.
I'm a FaceBook friend with the Sales Manager now His name is Brandt Bourque (they are based in Baton Rouge after all!). His direct mail address is [email protected] - maybe mention me and definitely mention the TalkBass membership for an extra discount
19.
Anybody ever bought anything from Anderton's? they're supposed to have some decent prices
Not personally but a friend uses them all the time and really likes them. He buys at the shop and not online though.
20. I bought a batch of Sunbeams from Perfect Bass in the USA. I can't speak highly enough of their service, friendliest most helpful dealer I've ever come across! http://www.theperfectbass.com/explore.cfm?...p;SS=1&CR=Y Sunbeams currently listing at $22 a set and if you're a signed up TalkBass member they'll add maybe another 10% or so discount. I bought 5 sets and some other stuff and was in the States at the time and they threw in shipping for free. Obviously shipping to the UK will be a factor and VAT & import duties are going to add even more so it might not be worth the hassle now. I did wonder at one point about maybe getting a bit of a BassChat cartel going. If enough people wanted a few sets it might almost have been worth setting something up as they have a huge range of makes and sets available. However the bloody £ is worth a lot less against the $ these days making a bulk order not as attractive.
21. Just started using one of these: Weighs nothing (18lbs) and surprisingly loud. Easily copes with rehearsals at the volumes my 7 piece soul band plays at Bass Direct sell them at £550
22. A quick recommendation for Phil - I've been chatting with him recently and he's a very nice chap indeed. In fact I can also vouch for Jake who I've bought a cab from in the past
23.
On the same note - I normally find myself watching Sky Arts a lot more than the regular music channels these days, there are some brilliant classic live performances every night at 9pm! Always good to know that someone's here to give us a heads-up in case we miss them tho
If you have Sky+ and set yourself up for remote record & register at MySky then you can use the electronic EPG online to search for music stuff. It's easy to use once you've got the hang of it & when you find something you like you just hit the record button & it send a message to your Sky+ box! I use it all the time and that was, in fact, how I recorded this show Only pain is that it only has one week's advance programme data.
24.
Speaking of which - it might be old hat, in which case I apologise, but just in case there is anyone who doesn't know of this version of 'Don't Believe a Word'? Completely blew me away when I first watched it. Don't know how to embed the Youtube thingy so heres a link
I love the various slower/longer versions of this that are kicking around, always thought the original was too short! Some of them go into the 'standard' version of the song after the slow part - this one is 7 mins long: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YzpMBscDNbM
