Man i love to watch/listen to these gospel cats. I read on one of his posts, that hes been playing for only 6-7 years!!!!???..He over plays sometimes but who cares. Is it something about worship that does it?? The slapping at 1.20 is so fresh. Thought i would share. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XyTKjtL65o
I love his 'signature tune' on his MySpace page :http://www.myspace.com/darkknightofbass And he's only 21 - which makes me want to cry I have a feeling my YouTube downloader & MP3 converter may be in action later tonight. . . . . . .

I have one of these: Lovely little thing to play, great range of tones and problems with deep low notes (which some people sometimes worry about with small bodied basses). Balance is perfect and you can happily play for hours without any fatigue. I do suffer from the 'misplaced fretting hand' problem though. I generally use the Zon at home whilst learning new songs and then my Lakland JO at rehearsal. I often find my hand falling a whole two frets out if I'm not really concentrating. I think it's the way it hangs on the strap rather than some subconscious stuff going about the lack of headstock though

OK, so the Flea is back up for sale. I'd decided to hang on to it after a couple of sales fell through fairly late in the day but realised that I've only played it once in the last month & it just seems such a waste to be sitting quietly in a case! I'd had two firm offers at £1,300 (but these were the ones who were unable to complete) and quite a few tentative feelers at £1,200 so thought I'd split the difference at £1,250 if anyone is interested
http://www.lakland.com/skyline_vs_us.htm The Skylines are superb instruments.
I'd say that the "average" Lakland Skyline arrives in a better state of set up than an American Standard Fender. Nothing against Fender stock instruments but I've certainly come across a few that didn't feel properly finished. Every Skyline I've tried has been absolutely beautifully finished. I have a couple of much more expensive US hand finished basses and I think my two Skylines easily match them for fit and finish. One of the really important things about the Skylines is that (part from the really early ones I think) they have the same electronics as the US series. These are fitted in the USA by Lakland when each bass is properly checked over before final shipping. In this case the original DJ's had the Aero pickups fitted. Recent ones have mostly had stock Lakland pickups. Nothing desperately wrong with Lakland's own pickups but the Aeros tend to be preferred by most people and will definitely add some value as they are the ones originally specified by DJ himself. Definitely no need to be concerned about the original manufacture in Korea
That is really really sexy
Indeed, I've not seen one of these before. I'm a big fan of Tele's as well!

Another +1 to Jakesbass. What a well written, reasoned & thoughtful response See, takes a 'seasoned' pro to really know his stuff
As for the Stones and Presley etc., they were bringing "black:" music of America to the white masses at a very different time in the world. I doubt any band playing a cover of Welcome To The Jungle can be said to be bringing a new and unique musical style to the WMC! Its a very very different kettle of m musical fish.
I realise this is moving slightly off topic now but how about if the band playing "Welcome to the Jungle" were African playing to an audience that rarely listened to white music? No different from Elvis taking a black blue song & playing to white people who wouldn't entertain the thought of listening to "coloured" music?
To make a fairer comparison, would you prefer a great covers band or a great originals band? How about a covers band or a karaoke night? Covers band or staying in and watching a low-budget biopic about The Monkees?
On your first point - Impossible to differentiate If a band is "great" then they are "great". What possible difference should it make who wrote the songs? In general terms a Karaoke night is my idea of hell. However if the karaoke singers happened to be Aretha Franklin & James Brown then I'd go for the Karaoke ahead of pretty much anything else. Third one is tricky too, I was just about the right age to be quite impressed by the raw fun of the Monkees and had no idea quite how manufactured they were. A low budget biopic might just work in terms of matching the whole ethos of The Monkees. If so then I'd simply Sky+ it and watch it in my own time whilst still keeping some free time to go and see the covers band.
Must be great to be a musician in Denmark Street
They all tip up there eventually, especially when they first get some sort of public acclaim and get a recording contract and advance
Some discussion on the relative merits of playing covers / tribute stuff is probably needed to reassure my miserable soul, and also if anyone can honestly justify it morally I'd be interested to hear your points of view!
Tough call, spend an evening watching appalling "originals" bands playing tuneless rubbish with little or no stagecraft or even basic musicianship or a classy "covers" band playing superbly written songs with serious ability and genuine stage presence that you can dance or sing along to and have a really great evening. There has to be a case for both originals bands (without whom all new music would die) and bands who play other people's songs for the enjoyment of an audience who don;t want to be challenged. Speaking of covers bands - where would we be without the amazing musicianship and ability of the Motown, Stax & Atlantic bands and singers who pretty much all played & sang other people's songs? Or the early rock 'n' rollers like Elvis (or even the Stones) who "covered" early black blues and soul classics?
The live music scene is littered with "bands" everyone's in a band...everyone's got a guitar
Unfortunately I can't agree. I only wish it were the case! Using a really simple example - I work in a vaguely trendy company right in the heart of London and about 3 minutes walk from Denmark Street. We have about 70 employees with an average age of mid 20's and all earning way above the average national wage. Not a single band member to be seen, couple of bedroom guitarists at best. It does feels like there are a few more bands around these days than the really horrible era of everything being produced on a sequencer and all the bass lines being played on keyboards. The more the merrier in my opinion. If only it really were the case that everyone was in a band. How wonderful it would be to live in a world without prima donna musicians telling everyone else that their playing didn't really count because it wasn't either "original" or that the only "real" music was being played by supposedly hard working "professionals".

Do you mean the background music on the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG)? If so then te easy option is just to turn it off: Services - System Setup - Sound Settings - Background Music Off - Save New Settings ^_^

If a band fancies playing for a night for beer money and they enjoy doing it and entertain people I can't really see what's wrong with it? I certainly can't see how this could possibly be devaluing music. I don't play for the sort of money your bar man spoke about but if someone called me up and asked if I wanted to play a gig without too much hassle and would give me £25 for my trouble I'd certainly do it if I had the free time. To be really honest I love playing live and would play for free now and then without a second thought.

Super nice guy - we arranged quite a convoluted three way trade very smoothly indeed!
Hi mate, Just a few questions on the EA...i've used a different model before, i found it to be a little wooly sounding, or a little undefined. Would you say this is clean and clear sounding? Also, what kind of warmth or punch does it offer? Thanks J
An EA sounding wooly - that's about the last thing I'd have said about EA gear. Was it paired with an EA cab?

Damn, damn, damn! So there I am, solidly transferred over to the SS camp and an advocate of that clean EBS sound. Then, by a convoluted set of circumstances, I end up owning a 20 year old Ampeg SVT 2 that looks like it's just left the shop. Was going to simply sell it on but obviously wanted to give it a try out to make sure everything was working OK. Only had 20 mins or so but it sounded just great. Clean, sharp, lovely tone and matched my NYC Sadowsky in way I would never have associated with an Ampeg. The single master volume (no 'gain' knob on these!) meant I just turned it on and played with all the EQ turned off & I was really impressed. Obviously the bastard thing weighs a ton - the shock proof Boogie case it's in isn't helping on the weight front - and I could easily see it becoming a right handful. I really don't need all this gear so know I have an interesting weekend ahead when I need to try the Ampeg against my EBS (maybe mixing & matching the Ampeg & EBS cabs as well) alongside my 'reference' Euphonic & Trace V-Type + SS power amp gear
