1. Damn - when I saw the title of the thread I thought we had some saying hello who was actually called "Marion Arkansas" - cool name for a girl bassist I thought Good to have some more classic prog people on board
2. So does anyone know all the Fender based acronyms? Off the top of my head I've got: MIA - Made in America MIM - Made in Mexico MIJ - Made in Japan CIJ - Crafted in Japan Must be some more?
3. I was over at obbm's the other day and was really impressed with his lovely Lakland DJ. I have a few contacts over in the USA and mentioned I fancied one and one of them managed to pick a virtually new one up for me at an incredibly good price. It's a rosewood board model and I'm more of a fan of maple boards but very much looking forward to it travelling across the pond
4. After a brief, but noisy, disagreement with the wife I think I can be a bit more open to trades than previously suggested (she wants me to flog stuff for cash & I want to 'stockpile' more bass gear!). As far as trades are concerned I'd be very interested in a MarkBass 1x12 and would definitely consider any interesting bass, or even 6 string guitar or amp, options I've also dropped the prices a bit
5.
hi Molan, wow, i didn't think the PPA would attract that much moolah... bargain for some one then Was is you who bought that EBS 1u power amp?
Yep that was me - I seem to have a bit of an EBS fetish going at the moment - that and the fact that I picked it up for under £100 including shipping
6. The answer to your woes Uggy is to flog the Fatboy for a tidy profit & buy a Street Triple - you don't really need the 1,050 engine of the Speed Triple and the 675 engine is a peach. Having saved a huge wedge of cash you can then splash out on a much sexier bass & still be quids in
7. I've seen a couple of the PPA300's sell for around the £200 mark on Ebay recently - I'd been watching them to partner my Trace Pre-Amp! Bought an EBS instead though so I'm not in contention now. Excellent price, someone should snap this up quickly
8. You never know what you might spot in a pawn / cash converter type place. I once picked up a Spector fretless 4 for £100 in one. The same place had an amazing Tom Anderson quilted maple top guitar for a few hundred quid but I couldn't afford it at the time.
9. Can't beat good old black with sparkly pearly plate & some custom inlays
10. Took some pics today - not great quality but better than nothing! Forgot to mention that the head is really flexible for practice use - it has an input for an MP3 or CD player with an independent input level control and a headphones out with an option to turn the main speaker off so you can balance all the signals for private listening. Everything working fine. Gain pots are a little scratchy at very low settings (I think because it's never used at low settings as it has a simple speaker off button if muting is required). Really not enough to worry about but just want to be as accurate in the description as possible. Speaker is in good condition having been used on a handful of occasions only. The small mark on the front grill has now been cleaned up. Any questions please ask!
11. Listening to Sunburst Band right now on Solar Radio via Sky! They've been #1 on the Solar funk album chart for six weeks now.
12.
I think it has to. Even though I personally prefer old basses, it's nice to see something different, that isn't always retro styled. That's a gorgeous piece of wood!
Looks much better now it's had a good clean Well worth every penny of the £240 I just paid for it
13. Looks like price has been agreed so this would appear to be sold pending the usual stuff
14. Got pretty close to selling the combo but looks like it's back up for sale at £525 with the CXL112 at £350 I'll knock £25 off if someone wants the pair @ £850 Could be up for trades like a little MarBass 1x12 or always up for offers on interesting basses! Now reduced to £775 for the newer pair or £725 for the older model combo
15.
Have you got that line down yet? Was listening to it on the radio this moring and it sounds nice but a little tricky!
I got pretty close (with some YouTube assistance!). However other band members struggling so seems to have been dropped from the set for the time being!
16. Does a Status Electro count?
17. Big list of credits on the album! Bass players include Nathan East & David Williams as well as Rick Anderson.
18.
I'd go for a classic 3ply black/white/black for a 70s look.
Does look pretty cool: Although maybe nicer with a maple board - tort might look better against the rosewood?
19. P-T-P might be your man for a good comparison of the 1x12 vs the 2x10 as he's owned both recently and gigged with them regularly: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showuser=226
20.
Don't you mean Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen?
I heard a great interview with Ready Freddie Washington once. He got a writer's credit for the coming up with the bass line to Forget Me Nots. It was a big enough hit in it's own right but was then used for Men in Black & covered by George Michael on Fast Love. Serious multi-platinum sales stuff for each of these. I think Will Smith gave him a jont writer credit but he didn't initially get a co-credit from George Michael. The stories were that Patrice Rushen & Ready Freddie settled out of court though. Also some additional credits when Randy Crawford covered it and it was featured in the movie Big. He reckoned he was earning enough from this one bassline alone to pretty much retire if he wanted to! One of my favourite bass stories, session guy comes up with great bass line, gets writer credit and earns a fortune - how often does that happen?
21.
Which pickups are fitted? Lindy Fralin?
Good shout, if it's got Fralin's already fitted then a quick chat with Mr East might make a world of difference: http://www.east-uk.com/jrhome.htm Obviously known for his J circuits but I'm sure he could kit you out with something for a P Not a huge amount of work involved and because it's all beneath the scratch plate then there's no lasting damage if you don't like it. Would be fairly easy to sell on again afterwards I reckon.
22.
They're available from stringbusters and stringsdirect from the end of the month. Only available as a 4 string set though unfortunately.
To be honest I'd probably just import some from the US if I decided to buy any. Must be close to half price compared to UK prices. Bootzillas listing at StringsDirect at £34.95 a set compared to $29.99 in the States.
23. I spotted recently that DR have added Jonas Hellborg signature strings to their Marcus Miller & Bootsy Collins sets! Just wondered if anyone had tried any of these and, if so, whether they were really any different from the standard sets? I fancy the Bootzilla's myself The costly stainless steel wrap wire used to manufacture Bootzillas is unique. It produces a disctinct crunchy tone. Bootzillas bass strings are coated for extra protection against damaging sunstances such as perspiration, dirt, humidy, and acid hands. The stainless steel is imported from europe and provides an edgier tone than standard domestic stainless steel.
24. I'm assuming that's a standard passive circuit in there? Maybe a higher spec PU and an active pre might help give it more of that crispness a Stingray would have - apologies if you've already thought of this, just trying to come up with ideas to 'save' this baby for you!
25. I agree with the others on this - I'd question the ability of the other band members to question the actual tone of your bass (especially when it's something as classy as a Lakland!). Have they said exactly what it is they don't like - E.G. If they think it's too "thumpy" or "bright" etc. then it could surely be remedied by adjusting the amp setting and/or the tone on the bass itself. Also - have they actually got off the stage and listened to how it sounds out front or are they just talking about stage monitoring sound? I have to admit to having had the reverse of this debate with a guitarist in a soul band who insisted on using an Ibanez pointy headstock guitar with a super crunchy Marshall which had a sound that was way too heavy for soul rhythm playing. However the big issue here was a whole combination of things and I'm sure he could have got a more 'appropriate' sound from his rig had he been bothered.
