So let's get some kind of context here: I was bought up on 70's prog & rock & moved to London at the height of the first wave of punk. Went out with a girl who was a major soul freak who converted me into a bit of a soul boy for a while which slowly metamorphosed into serious jazz funker. So my general musical tastes were continually moving around from rock to punk to soul to funk, maybe some world stuff on the side and never really drifting into 'real' jazz or classical. If there was any sort of common theme to all this it was a total hatred of anything country & the slightest whine of a pedal steel would ahve me running for the hills. Then I was lucky enough to get a bit of a career break and decided to ride a Harley across the USA. I rode through the southern states on a big old Electra Glide that just happened to have a radio on board. Lots of nice open road in states without a helmet law gave me hours to tune around the radio but all I could find was country. None of that vaguely hip stuff that's around following 'Oh Brother' just modern day chart material. It just kinda fitted the 'moment' of riding through the real heartland of the south but I thought I'd tire of it once I was home. Downloaded a selection of the top 40 that I heard so many times during the 4-5 weeks on the road & got completely hooked! So here I am in the kitchen listening to downloads on my laptop of the latest Dierks Bently album soon to be followed by Martina McBride. I even try to watch out for the annual Country Music Awards shows - and not just to laugh at the silly hats. . . . So - am I losing my marbles as I approach my 50th year or is there anyone else out there with a sneaking admiration of Rascal Flatts

I really like the look of those sea foam green Attitudes - how cool to have a signed one as well. I saw Billy play with Vai in LA at a big charity gig at the House of Blues. We got to stand a few yards away from him & his playing was awesome. My poor wife endured about 3-4 hours of almost completely instrumental guitar rock - not a single vocal until the second jam session encore. Mind you, it was my birthday and we were on out honeymoon so the poor ever sufferin' thing was generally OK about it all

I have one of the early ones. I used it to take to different rehearsal rooms with amps & cabs of vary quality. I used to run the studio amp as flat as possible, or bypassing the eq if I could, and tweak the Sadowsky to get a decent sound. Worked surprisingly well, not always getting a superb sound but often much nicer then some of the 'house' rigs. It stays in my gig bag for emergencies but I haven't used it for a while. Might work nicely with my new Status Electro, lol. I think I saw one for sale recently at quite a cheap price in the sale section here?
This is a cracking bass. I played it in the gallery when it was there. I was poor at the time or it would have walked out with me! I have a Shuker being completed in the next month (and a budget breaking Lakland in the post to me too) or I'd take this now. The inlay might put some people off, but not as much as if it said 'Colin' or something! We're all 'Randy' at some point! Funny, the pickups ARE worth quite a bit. Guys in the states would kill for 1 Lane Poor MM pickup, let alone 2! Good luck with the sale
It's funny but I've never been concerned about the inlay. I always think of the bass as being called "randy" rather than it being a reference to me as the owner
I bought it from the gallery for £1400 1 year later after months of trying to sell it for no less than a £1000 i had to drop the price on ebay for a quick sale :-( Never understood why it didn't sell for more. Lovely bass but moved away from the sound of graphite necks.
Ah ha, that makes sense I'm not particularly desperate to sell so hopefully I'll get mote than that. Had a tentative offer at £1,250 earlier this year so that's a pretty good marker I think.

Check this guy out One of my favourite funk/disco songs Totally effortless - watch it through to the 5 min mark when he starts really digging in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abCW1trDwmQ
ahh this brings back memories :-) i used to own this bass bought it from the bass gallery about 5-6 years ago ended up selling it on ebay a long time ago i think it was for about £900?? Great bass!
Ouch - I hope it wasn't as little as that I certainly didn't get it that cheap! I seem to remember seeing it advertised once before I bought it for around the £1,400 mark. May have been the Gallery but not sure.

So, after a lot of deliberation I think it's time for the Flea to move on. Every time I take it out of the gig bag I think how much I like it but I don't play it that much these days as my baby Zon always seems to call out to me whenever I feel like playing & the Flea is too valuable to leave at the rehearsal space! This amazing Flea was built especially for Randy Hope-Taylor (principally of Incognito fame) to take on a world tour with Jeff Beck. It has twin Lane Poor pick ups and custom switching which provides a passive/active option and a separate switch for a solo boost option. It also has a stunning inlay at the 12th fret of Randy & his signature. Plays like a dream and the various options and twin Lanes give it a huge variation of potential sounds. If you think a conventional Flea is powerful then you should hear what a second one does when it's mounted closer to the neck! Here's what Ian from SMART said about it recently (hope it's OK to quote you Ian?): "Randy wanted an even bigger sound when he hit the USA with Jeff Beck to compete with Steve Alexander on drums, Jennifer Batten on guitar as well as Jeff doing his bit... So, we got Modulus to provide the extra pick-up and Martin Peterson of The Gallery fitted them for Randy. The fantastic inlay is utterly superb in detail and finish, Randy faxed me this cartoon he drew of himself and we just faxed it onto Modulus who incorporated it into the fingerboard. Randy's bass playing was a superb addition and foundation to the Beck guitar sound with Jennifer Batten doing her zillion note thing in between and Steve Alexander with his solid techno type beat on the 'ol drums." It's in fantastic condition, there's a few wear marks (presumably from Randy!) but not really noticeable unless you're really looking closely and under a bright light. A standard new Flea is currently retailing at £1,395 with a single pick-up (not Lane Poor any more) so one like this would cost something around the £1,750 mark new (Ian - I'm happy for you to correct me on this - I've allowed for an extra £100 for it being a twin PU, £100 because they are Lanes, £100 for the inlays & £50 for the wiring). With a reduced price of £1,200 that's a potential £500+ saving! It comes with a Modulus gig bag but if I need to post it then I'll need to add the cost of a very good condition Hiscox flight case at £50 plus whatever the postage works out at. Happy to ship to anywhere really - I've bought & sold basses all over the place! I've added one pic here, the inlay is my avatar & there's a couple of other pics in the bass porn section: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=16306 I thought I'd put it here first as I'd like to see it go to a good home but realise I might get more if I'm prepared to export it to Europe (or even America - I've had silly offers to just sell the Lane Poors from the States in the past!). I'll leave it here for a while before it heads to EBay. Any questions, don't hesitate to ask

Had my first BC meet up with people this week. Where did we choose to 'hang' - the car park of Reading Services on the Easbound lane of the M4! One Markbass 1x12 combo made its way up from Bristol, a 2x10 travelled from Brighton & some cash trekked the short distance from Henley. The 1x12 then headed back to Henley, the 2x10 zapped down to Bristol and the cash (plus a few new compatriots) went to Brighton. We all said it would be a quick three way transaction and then we'd be off, but, of course as soon as you stick three bassmen together they can't help but start nattering about equipment & basses Only 30-40 minutes or so nattering in a car park but really nice to meet some fellow low-enders & a very nice pair they were as well. All three people went away happy with their end of the deal & looking forward to trying out new gear or using the money to fund things. You don't get that from EBay now do you

Can't help coming back to look at this every now and then! Nearly went for a vaguely similar NYC Sadowsky on EBay at the weekend as shown in the pic below. It went for a lot less (£1,147!) than I thought it would. Had I known it was going to sell for so little I might have stuck another few hundred quid on the bidding but the colour but not as nice as the deep blue of this one.
ooo shall I? Well the Dudepit is a Lakland based forum in the USA. Steve Barr the owner also owned a retail bass outlet and commisioned the first Lakland DPLE1 (dudepit Limited edition) having to order a batch of 24 to get the special spec that these basses have, there has since been a DPLE2 a white Pbass thpe with a darkstar and a DPLE3 a decade based bass. These are very collectable and superb basses.
Thanks for that! So how heavy is one of these then? I like the idea of a super slim neck. One of my favourite necks is on My Kubicki which is particularly anorexic. -

I stroll down "Tin Pan Alley" pretty much every day as I work right around the corner & have to go past to buy my lunch. Always do a bit of window shopping but never buy anything. Took an incredibly rare guitar into one of the Vintage shops one day & they offered me about £700 for it - they had one up for sale that was not as rare & in worse condition for £2,100. Their argument was that the difference was mostly cost of premises & VAT - a 300% mark up, I don't think so! Often spot the odd interesting thing though, the Rickys make me laugh somtimes, I own a '73 & paid less than half the price most of the Denmark St shops want for any 70's Ricky.
I've been mighty surprised by the Glockenklang Bass Art! Clarity without sterility and warmth without mush. I'm running mine into WoT's Schroeder 21012 tonight to see what a single medium sized cab can do.
Did you buy the one that was on EBay recently? Very good price!
I don't remember Soul and Funk ever having a "clean" sound. It was all woolly Ampeg, Acoustic and Sunn amps through 15" speakers. I can't say anything to bolster your need for GAS. You've already got a great rig, why change it?
Good point! Actually I was thinking more of 70's disco / funk rather than classic gritty funk. Must be clearer in my explanations in the future

I'm currently running a Euphonic i-Amp 350 combo with a CXL 112 extension cab which I really like. Haven't had a decent chance to use it with my new soul/funk band but think it'll be just fine for this. However - I've had it a while so vaguely thinking of swapping I've organised a nice little combo for rehearsals so this would be purely for medium sized function hall gigs. Quite like the idea of the Epifani 502 + 310 combination but I'm sure there's other stuff out there that might be fun to try. Just looking for a few pointers before I hit the GAS trail properly!

I've seen him a few times with Wilko Johnson - I love his live bass sound. Very, very "in yer face" Here's a YouTube clip of the pair of them - I can't hear the bass brilliantly through my crappy office freebie headphones but it should give you an idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0sSQtFj42E...feature=related

My main bass is a tiny headless Zon VB but I also own a pair of Modulus basses, a VJ and a Flea. I can genuinely say I've had an issue with either of them in terms of neck heaviness compared to my Zon. I often play them sitting down without a strap with no problems at all. All three are 4 strings so maybe it's more of an issue with 5's? I am going to sell bot of my Modulus basses though, only because I'm in lust with something else!

Just got back from a rather splendid evening of classic French prog rock from Ange. They've been going for about 40 years and the latest incarnation has a few younger members who are excellent. Absolutely wondeful guitarist and a very good bass and drums. Bass man is a great mover and quite possibly seemed to be enjoying himself more at a gig than anyone I've ever seen! Played Pedulla Rapture through an SVT with a 4x10 and had that typical slightly overdriven French prog bass sound. They never come over to the UK these days but well worth looking out for if you're in France.
I've managed to retain the same bike (CBR 600f) for the last 4 years and it's probably as much bike as I'll ever need (ie not many people riding on the road today can genuinely ride a semi-sport 600 to the max and be on the ragged edge), though I do fancy a more upright bike to take some strain off my shoulder. Love the sound of big V-twins I'll likely as not direct any funds from the sale of this bass (as and when) into more bass gear as that's something that I use almost everyday whereas my bike is a weekend/holiday toy
I'm kind of the opposite! I ride 80-100 miles a day 5 days a week - hence the continual swapping of bikes. Rarely get time to play the basses during the week (other than weekly rehearsal) so my fun time on bass is at weekends. Still looks like a sexy bass, if my Kubicki sells then I'd definitely be interested.

There are some classics here! Two of the guys who first got me wanting to play bass back in the early 70's were Chris Squire & Mike Rutherford. Both Rickenbacker men in those days of course and amongst the few bass players that really cut through the murk of some of the mixes around at that time. Shame Rutherford decided he wanted to play lead all the time and they lost that wonderful punchy Rick sound. Um - thinks to self - must get the nut repaired on my '73 Ricky, get a pick out & try some Yes & Genesis songs!
Sunny Bank Holiday bump. I've just been for a run out on my bike and it has me thinking about diverting my Bass related GAS to changing my bike. I'd like to sell this or trade + cash my way, so hit me with what you've got... a black Z1000 could be part of a good deal
My two GAS obsessions as well! Just sold a pair of bikes & bought a nice black '07 GSXR thou. Should shut me up on the bike front for a few months In recent years I've been through heavily customised Harleys, a few Aprilias, Ducati 999 & an MV Agusta F4 1000. Much more impressive than my motley collection of basses! I wish the bikes cost less than the bass gear though - mind you, I actually made money on the Duke & the MV so i guess it's not all bad
